After 5 miles (the road comes to a “T”) you will see another National Park sign, on the right hand side. Turn right on County Road 7950. You cannot turn left. (If you go straight, that will take you to Pueblo Pintado). Drive 3 miles on County Road 7950. The pavement will end. On the right hand side you will see a sign that says "Dry Camp". THE CAMPGROUND IS ON THE LEFT HAND SIDE. There will be a sign that reads: “Horsethief Campground”. In front of the short road to the Campground. At the end of the short road to the campground is: a large school building, and 2 other buildings. We apologize that the road is a little uneven, but we are looking to improve this real soon. The campsites are in a slightly hilly, brushy area, so there’s some privacy built in. We picked campsite 11 so we could watch the beautiful sunset, and sunrise. It was so quiet out there!! Beautiful stars at night. The porta potty was clean and nearby and there were trash cans next to it. It was only our 2nd time hip camping so I was surprised that there wasnt a table and fire ring, just a space to camp . There were rocks to make a fire ring and we used our camping boxes for a table, so we were fine , but we’ll get a table top for future hipcamping. The owner’s two dogs joined us in the morning and were super friendly and fun.

Our family loved camping on Kammie's land. We had a truck camper and 2 tents. There was plenty of room for each. The signage and lights were very helpful. The porta potty was exactly as described, very clean and pleasant. It is situated just a few miles north of town; the market just a mile away has coffee and morning pastries. It was a very pleasant stay in a nice, quiet neighborhood. It is on the Durango Silverton Railway, but that just added to the charm!

Weekend Trip to Horse-Thief Campground

This was a great alternative to Gallo campground if you want to visit Chaco. We had a camper and so being in a dry camp was fine for us. We drove out on the property under a tree with some great views. There are other trees on the property to drive to that people were staying at also. The dark night star lit sky was incredible! It was quiet and a good place to come back to before and after visiting Chaco. Be prepared for a 30 minute drive on a dirt road that is very bumpy. We did see a lot of wild horses on the drive in and out of Chaco which made it. Yolanda was very nice and helpful and said that they are hoping to get water and electric out there soon.

Weekend Trip to Animas Valley View

Kammie’s Hipcamp was not only met our expectations but exceeded them! Electricity was also provided (an absolute necessity in the IPhone age!). Kammie welcomed us upon arrival and directed us right to the site. As a bonus we enjoyed several starry nights in the valley.

Linda’s Santa Rita land is a beautiful, quiet, rural setting. Friendly horses and donkeys graze nearby and a small, historic irrigation canal lined with cottonwoods and chimesa runs by the sites. Linda was great to work with during my 7-day stay.

3 nights at Linda M.’s Santa Rita Ranch

So, we had a blast at this quirky little vintage farm just 11 miles outside of Durango, CO, where our campsite was basically the VIP section of the pasture. Picture this: our van was nestled in a cozy corner, fully surrounded by brush, trees, and an irrigation ditch that made us feel like we were on some sort of rustic survival show. Horses and donkeys became our next-door neighbors—super nosy ones, I might add! We had the entire campsite to ourselves, which made us feel like the kings and queens of our own little compound. We even felt brave enough to leave our camper van wide open at night, just chilling under the protection of our trusty insect netting. Talk about living on the wild side! But the real midnight party came courtesy of our donkey pals who loved to hang out by the back door during the witching hour, perhaps hoping for some late-night snacks or just an ear rub. By day, we were entertained by the local prairie dog circus, darting around the field like they were training for the Summer Olympics. And getting to Durango was just a hop, skip, and a jump away! Linda, our host, was a gem—super friendly and accommodating. If you're in the mood for a private, safe spot where "roughing it" means sharing your space with adorable donkeys and feisty prairie dogs, then trust me, this Hip Camp is the place to be!
