This is a 3rd generation "Family Farm" of a different sort I suppose. Seems there's a bit of everything here, and arguably not enough of anything. At least for conventional farming. So we've learned to do things a bit differently.Our main crop is wine and juice grapes since our topography, climate, and soil type makes it a premier location for that. But with 30+ acres of forested hillsides, low ground, and natural areas we've evolved into a mixed farm and forest enterprise. Our goal is to utilize the productivity of all our property while still retaining the basic character and usefulness of the wild areas. Letting each thing be what it wants to be and does best on it's own. Flow, not force.So our year starts early with tapping maple trees and making maple syrup. Plus there's grape trimming about this time as well. When the forest floor starts to green up a bit later, we start digging Ramps, or Wild Leeks in the woods. Most of these will go to the more trendy Chicago restaurants, but we also have some local sales. Next comes inoculating winter-cut logs with Shiitake spawn for next years mushroom production. This year we also conducted a few hands-on workshop seminars on mushroom growing as well. Then it's on to our raised bed herb & veggie gardens. (Fresh herbs are just so much fun to cook with!) We grow enough for our own yearly use, as well as some for direct sales. Summer keeps us busy tending all the different crops here and trying to keep up. But there's that steady progression of fresh veggies to eat. Yum !!! Fall brings our annual Grape U-Pick in September and October. And we try to time related crops like mums, pumpkins, and gourds for this same time frame. Makes the place a bit more interesting. Late fall is when we bring in firewood to heat the house and workshop. Stacks of wood everywhere. Hopefully before the 1st snow. In winter it's time to fire up the woodworking shop and be a bit creative. Build furniture, equipment maintenance, who knows what next years projects will include. I like to keep everybody guessing.So, that's what goes on here. You're welcome to check it out, lend a hand, relax back at camp, walk the vineyards and/or forest, or just breathe and relax. That's up to you. But I would recommend visiting a few of the fine local wineries. Seems there's a festival going on at one or another of them just about every weekend. Good music, good wine, good times. And there's the Lake Michigan beaches a few miles down the road.Yeah, this is a pretty casual place here, love meeting new people, very open to civil discussions of all sorts.However, rude, ill mannered people will probably enjoy staying elsewhere. Whether you are heading to the beauty of "up north" or running between the big cities east and west, this is a great spot to rest and enjoy some down time. Lake Michigan is a 40 minute drive west from here and if you are a bicyclist, you can ride the Kal-Haven Trail from the trail head about 2 miles from here, all the way to the Big Lake and back (35.5 miles one way). We have trails in the woods and open fields to look over, depending on your preference. As of this year, there is no electricity and water hookup, so tents or trailers with electric and water are your option. We have a bell tent available for a single or a couple to stay. On that same site is room for a trailer or tents, if you want to invite your friends, and we've built a cooking shelter and a bath house that has a compost toilet and a shower with on demand hot water from solar energy. We have a horse farm on the property and offer horse experiences (All our activities are done on the ground near or with the horses, so, no riding is offered) at an additional fee. It is expected that you will remain outside the fence from the horses while you are staying, unless you sign a release and are accompanied by the owner to interact with them. We do not allow dogs. There are two campsites cleared in the woods, for tent camping, and more will be cleared in 2025, as time allows. We had a great time tent camping at John’s site! There was plenty of space, a nearby port-a-potty, and a grill and table all set up so we didn’t have to bring as much with us as we normally would. There’s a nice trail behind the site and plenty of tree coverage in case of rain or too much sun. John was very accommodating making sure we had everything we needed. We’re thinking of coming back again next year for our yearly trip. Thanks John!

Our tent camping experience here was wonderful! The autumn foliage was beautiful surrounding the vineyard and Mr. John provide a lot of things (picnic table, cooking prep area, fire pit, wood, and more) at our site to make our stay easier. We were fortunate enough to visit during u pick season and sample the delicious grapes in the vineyard. Definitely ask for restaurant recs from Mr. John too.

My friend and I had a "grape" stay on John's vineyard! The sites are primitive but secluded and stocked with essential odds and ends. There's even a communal bin where you can take or leave some items if needed. John was very attentive, easy to talk with, and knows the area well if you're looking for recommendations. We loved every aspect and look forward to visiting again someday!

Tent camping works well on this land. It is off the beaten path, the views are perfect, and you have the possibility to commune with in a unique way. The few sites are spread well, meaning you don’t hear your neighbors much, there is plenty of space for parking, no red tape from state parks, a small trail, and community garden. John was a delight and checked on us routinely throughout our stay. We are definitely grateful for our wonderfully stress free weekend and hope to come back.

Site # 2 is about half way down the pond from the main house. A dock, suitable for sunbathing, picnicking or fishing is just steps away from this site.

The tiki torches were also a nice touch to keep the bugs away. John was extremely kind and helpful throughout our stay. We had such a wonderful three-night stay! The hosts were absolutely exceptional—so welcoming and kind that by the time we left, it felt like we were saying goodbye to friends. They went above and beyond, even providing toys and activities for our 15-month-old, which made the trip extra special for her. The amenities were fantastic, from the well-equipped outdoor kitchen to their thoughtful help with a few things we had forgotten to pack. The campsite itself was private and beautifully maintained, with peaceful trails to walk and explore right from our spot. Our toddler loved playing with the fun animals on the property and had the best time, and honestly, so did we. This was such a memorable trip, and we’re so grateful to have found such amazing hosts!

Tent camping is so special in John’s vineyard. Even with campers staying in the next site, we never heard them & we felt like we had the vineyard all to ourselves. In our site we were covered with a beautiful canopy of trees. Just steps outside of that you can enjoy the vineyard and once the sun goes down you have a private tree lined view of the gorgeous night sky. It is amazing! The site is equipped with basic necessities. Even though we arrived late the first night, John came out to greet us. Throughout our stay he could not have been a more gracious host.
