48mi from Port Austin · 12 sites
Bay County, located in the heart of Michigan, stands out for its diverse blend of urban and rural living, encompassing 14 townships and 4 cities. With a population of approximately 106,000 residents, it ranks as the 20th most populous county in the state, offering a vibrant community atmosphere. The governance of Bay County is structured around elected officials, including the Bay County Executive and a seven-member Board of Commissioners. Established under Public Act 139 of 1973, this framework allows for an elected County Executive to serve as the chief administrator, overseeing various departments while respecting the autonomy of other elected officials. This system ensures effective management and coordination across county services. In Michigan, local government responsibilities such as police and fire services, building and zoning regulations, tax assessment, and street maintenance are primarily managed by individual cities and townships. This decentralized approach allows for tailored governance that meets the specific needs of each community, enhancing the quality of life for Bay County residents.
