We're a non profit community garden in the Old Algiers neighborhood of New Orleans on the West Bank of the Mississippi River, a 15 minute drive or ferry ride to the French Quarter. We use the money from these bookings to fund the community food access work that we do. While you're here you can enjoy our peaceful and spacious garden property, and we encourage you to get to know some of the fantastic neighbors who use our community fridge and herb garden.
Take the scenic Mississippi River Levee Path 1 mile to get to the Algiers Ferry dock which departs every 30 minutes and drops you off at the foot of Canal Street in the heart of New Orleans. If you have a car you can cross the bridge and get to most of the city in 15 minutes. You can also explore Algiers Point with its many restaurants, bars, local art and historic buildings. The levee trail is a block away, where you can jog, bike, or just watch the boats go by.

WELCOME TO BUTTE LA ROSE, THE HEART OF THE ATCHAFALAYA BASIN AND THE HEART OF ACADIANA:
In the early 1930s when the Army Corps of Engineers carved two long levees right through the Atchafalaya River Basin, what had once been a widely sprawling river system prone to seasonal flooding became a fifteen-mile-wide "spillway" contained between those two earthen walls. The water level in the Basin rose by several feet, permanently flooding many areas, and people who had made their homes there eventually moved to communities on the dry, western side of the levee--Henderson, Catahoula, Bayou Benoit and beyond--leaving no trace of the old settlements behind. Only one community remained. Perched on a ridge along the banks of the Atchafalaya River, Butte La rose is the only community in St. Martin Parish that is still located between the Basin levees. No other place can claim to be the heart of Atchafalaya as credibly as Butte La Rose can. The community is nestled against one of the more winding meanderings of the Atchafalaya River, and residents remain closely tied to the river and other nearby waterways--fishing, crawfishing, frogging and hunting, enjoying bayou-side crawfish boils and pleasure boating. So many waterways surround Butte La Rose--Butte La Rose Canal, Henderson Lake, Lake Begneaux, Lake Pelba--it's as close to an island as you can get without actually being an island.
We are only 3 miles from interstate 10 but we are a small remote camping village.
Many hummingbirds visit here every year. They arrive in March and leave in Sept.

WELCOME TO BUTTE LA ROSE, THE HEART OF THE ATCHAFALAYA BASIN AND THE HEART OF ACADIANA:
In the early 1930s when the Army Corps of Engineers carved two long levees right through the Atchafalaya River Basin, what had once been a widely sprawling river system prone to seasonal flooding became a fifteen-mile-wide "spillway" contained between those two earthen walls. The water level in the Basin rose by several feet, permanently flooding many areas, and people who had made their homes there eventually moved to communities on the dry, western side of the levee--Henderson, Catahoula, Bayou Benoit and beyond--leaving no trace of the old settlements behind. Only one community remained. Perched on a ridge along the banks of the Atchafalaya River, Butte La rose is the only community in St. Martin Parish that is still located between the Basin levees. No other place can claim to be the heart of Atchafalaya as credibly as Butte La Rose can. The community is nestled against one of the more winding meanderings of the Atchafalaya River, and residents remain closely tied to the river and other nearby waterways--fishing, crawfishing, frogging and hunting, enjoying bayou-side crawfish boils and pleasure boating. So many waterways surround Butte La Rose--Butte La Rose Canal, Henderson Lake, Lake Begneaux, Lake Pelba--it's as close to an island as you can get without actually being an island.
We are only 3 miles from interstate 10 but we are a small remote camping village.
Many hummingbirds visit here every year. They arrive in March and leave in Sept.

Stayed here with my motorhome for a few days around New Year’s. Gated grounds with cameras made it feel safe even though the surrounding neighborhood seems a bit rough.
The park was clean, some nice from trains at night, and appeared well maintained. Easy access for RVs.
Staff were very friendly and helpful, just what you need after a long day of driving.
There is a bus stop nearby, which makes it fairly easy to get to the French Quarter and downtown without having to drive yourself. Overall, it is a reasonably priced and practical place to stay with a motorhome if you want secure parking and decent standards a short distance outside the city center.

It was good for value but nothing exciting. Kids loved the animals roaming everywhere but the RV powered sites are right at the entrance of the property, little charm. There is only one 30 Amp outlet so if the other site is using it, bad luck. There is no water connecting near by either, hoses are available from the house but we did not feel comfortable to get a use them. Host did not respond to any of our messages via Hipcamp and when we arrived and called to know where to go, the phone line was disconnected. So we had to go knocking. We did not feel welcome really.
Price was good though and it might be an oasis (as describe) when camping a little more in but from the site we had, it was just a parking spot.

This piece of campsite in the midst of a gardeb is beautiful as well as comfortable. We camped with a hatch tent attached to our SUV and the campsite was big enough for it. Facilities are clean and you wake up to the sound of birds. Though Mark was not on site during our stay, he was super responsive and helped answer all our questions. Would definitely come back.

In this garden, you can see intensive gardening methods, water collection systems and even bio gas production. So it’s not only a convenient place to stay. The natural wetlands of the Snow White Sanctuary were absolutely beautiful! We arrived late (well after dark) but the hosts came out and showed us where we could set up our tent. The dogs were so friendly and came out to greet us. We heard the horses too, but we only saw them in the morning. (Callie, the mare, wasn't too fond of being pet, but she didn't mind being admired from afar :) The only downside to this location is that there aren't really any hiking trails (only one that goes around their property, definitely less than a mile). There was a slight mishap as we were leaving (there are a lot of dogs, mostly rescued, at this location and their neighbors) and some of them got in a dogfight near the gate. But Alyssa came out and it was resolved. The animals are all very tolerant towards people, and I would recommend Snow White Sanctuary to anyone wanting to experience Louisiana's natural wetlands in a peaceful, animal-filled environment!

Where to go
Along the Gulf
Head along Louisiana’s coast, where you’ll find recreation areas, wildlife refuges, and, of course, beach campgrounds galore. Grand Isle State Park sits as close to the water as you can get, where RV sites are a fisherman’s paradise.
Follow the Mississippi
If you prefer the river to the gulf, stop in St. Francisville to get a taste of Louisiana’s local charm. The Mississippi River winds through Eastern Louisiana, and you can ride horses, hike, and fish throughout Tunica Hills. Toward the Texas Border

You don’t have to head toward the state’s edge to appreciate Louisiana's beauty. Chicot State Park hovers in the state’s central south, with more than 6,000 acres of rolling hills. Within the park, you’ll find trails, cabins, and the Louisiana State Arboretum. There’s no better place to learn about—and see—the state's varied landscape.
When to go
Hurricane season runs between June and November. Save yourself the stress of unpredictable weather, and head to Louisiana between fall and spring. Remember that Mardi Gras celebrations pick up in February, so if you want a peaceful and secluded camping trip, keep the festivities—and their crowds—in mind. Luckily, enough campsites pop up beyond Louisiana’s major cities. You can easily find the perfect campground year-round.
