The smaller of the two parks in Caribou-Targhee National Forests, Caribou is a welterweight not to be underestimated. Just south of its older brother, this land spans Utah, Wyoming, and Idaho, and is a crucial spot for supporting caribou populations. None of the animals here are bashful: bison, moose, deer, mountain lions, falcons, elk, and even black bears abound! Beautiful to snap shot from a distance.
Just south of the forest, Bear Lake is a fun spot to take a dip after you hike one of Caribou’s dozens of peaks (Mead Peak and Hawks Peak have gorgeous views, as does Big Elk Mountain at the northern tip of the park). At the south end, you’ll find campgrounds, fast flowing creeks, and the Minnetonka Cave at St. Charles Canyon. This is a site to see, but it stays 40 degrees down there all year so be sure to pack a coat, even if you’re sweating above ground. When you’re done, stop in the charming small town of Montpelier, surrounded by rolling hills and full of retro grocers and kitschy eateries. Yum!

The Shoshone and Nez Perce Native American tribes spent their summers in this area hunting and fishing the many streams in this valley. Trapper's used the area until the U.S. market collapse of the beaver skin top-hat in the late 1830's. Mormon pioneers began settling here in the 1890's. My great-grandparents settled in Teton Valley after moving from Nebraska in 1917. They farmed this land; growing potatoes, barley and hay. Today we raise alfalfa/grass hay that we feed to our horses. In the bottom of our field south of the campsite is Trail Creek, which is the headwaters of the Teton River. It flows out of the southern Teton mountain range in Wyoming and into Idaho. This water eventually joins the mighty Snake River near Rexburg, Idaho as it continues it's journey to the pacific ocean. Summer's here are usually warm sunny days with cool, chilly nights. This is a 16 foot traditional style tipi, facing east. It has two sleeping cots with inflatable pads, and a wood burning Solo fire container. (Yes I supply the firewood.) The National Park is 20 minutes away, the Town of Jackson is about 8 miles away, Teton Pass is just up the road. Right now (in the Fall) the Elk are bugling in the field right across from us. Access to some of the best trout fishing in the U.S. is just steps from your stay. Mountain views with nesting Osprey. Elk and deer also wander the property. Just a couple miles from camp is Palisades creek trailhead, a wonderful hike along a wide creek through the forest with multiple foot bridges crossing the creek and leading to 2 mountain lakes. we have seen a family of moose at the lower lake 2 out of 3 times we hiked it. A trail to the right just before the lake brings you to an out cropping of rocks giving you an elevated view. And of course Palisades reservoir, a 20 mile long stretch of water is just 3 miles from camp. The dam keeps the water flow of the snake at optimal flow all season.

Camp Steelhead was the perfect spot for us to spend a week exploring Island Park and Yellowstone national park. It had everything we needed to be comfortable but also very private and secluded feeling. We saw a moose walking near our camp so that was pretty amazing. We were close enough to several trails and off road areas to explore and there’s a convenience store right down the road. We really didn’t want to leave but we had to. Hopefully we can come back again someday.

This is such a beautiful, cool place. "The Lodge" (I agree with Tim...rename it to "The Hangar"!) was supercool. Open all night for toilet, shower, laundry and full kitchen facilities. There is a lovely gas fireplace with huge TV that they turn off at night. Full electric and sewage.

I usually look for sites with shade and more space but the amenities and value more than make up for lack of size and shade. The hot tub and pool is fantastic, the bathrooms and showers are really nice, but breakfast really was the icing on a nice cake. Scrambled eggs, sausage, fried potatoes, biscuits and gravy, pancakes, cereal, fruit. Oatmeal. We were paying $40 for the two of us to eat breakfast. We got breakfast and a campsite with full hookups for less.

This place was amazing. A hidden gem on the backside of the Tetons. While there are a couple houses near you, you are located on a private lane, with no traffic, and privacy buffers.
The end of the road has stunning views. Alicia was so responsive. Having the full hookups created a perfect Basecamp to explore Driggs, Jackson and the Grand Tetons. 5 stars and would definitely be back. Thank you for sharing your special gem with us.

Bryce and Nellie's camp sites were great and in a beautiful location. Although we didn't use their provided bathroom and common area, they had a lot to offer, and it all looked very clean.
