Weekend Trip to Moon Garden Getaway

Me and my sister decided to camp around the Big Island for a week instead of a hotel. We were very excited to arrive at Mae’s campsite and she was an amazing host. Her place was very easy to find with her instructions and she greeted us upon arrival. She showed us around the place and provided a book of recommendations for local places. She also offered us fruit off of her farm and there were a few fun games there. The campsite is beautiful and she had a very nice dog that was fun to hang out with. Overall 10/10.

The pros: affordable, beautiful area, nice glamping cabanas, well set up for cooking (big bbqs!), coolers and towels to take to the beach, picking fresh lillikoi in the morning, overall a really lovely stay. The cons: the shared space vibe was a little strange because they were overstaffed with volunteers, so it felt a bit like a youth hostel. It made it feel like guests were intruding on the volunteer hostel vibe and often the kitchen was occupied.

Nice private camp area behind locked gate. Careful there is a lot of broken glass as you drive past the gate towards the campsite, I cleaned up a lot but the more I cleaned up the more I found. The code to the gate was wrong on the directions - luckily there was a worker at the fruit stand that gave me the right one. Tried to get a hold of the host regarding wifi but took over a day - called twice, WhatsApp, text - she finally responded to a text. Nice place to unwind and not have anyone bother you.

The yurt is set on a beautiful farm and has all the amenities you'd need. I'd recommend bringing ear plugs if you are a light sleeper-as the sounds of the lush and dense tropical forest night life (maybe frogs) continue all night! My family and I were comfortable here for our 2 night stay and were able to dine in for all meals with the provided kitchen and fridge

So the “secret treehouse” is quite a treat. It’s SUPER secluded with nothing but the sound of rainforest creatures to keep you company. You can’t see lights from anything but the night sky when it gets dark. It’s got four porches, all covered, as well as a GIANT outdoor covered gathering area under the house itself. The sleeping loft is comfortable even for adults as long as you’re okay climbing a ladder, but the main floor also has a queen bed for those who don’t want to climb. Kitchen is well appointed and useful, though be prepared for no dishwasher (it’s a treehouse!). Half bath on the main floor, but the full bath is on the “ground” level, so you’re doing steps down to shower. This place is simply incredible. So cozy, but has pretty much everything you need including fast internet. Well, no dishwasher and no laundry (but the closest pay laundry is between there and the entrance of Volcanoes National Park, which is pretty close). There’s a bit of a haul through the woods to get your stuff to the treehouse, but it’s WORTH IT! Definitely hoping to get back and stay in this place again.

Mae is a wonderful host and such an interesting person to chat with. She welcomed us for morning tea and coffee and even shared delicious fruits from her farm. This camp was super fantastic. Our Host Mae was very caring for us (Malama ) and came to welcome us warmly when we arrive. The site was extraordinary with more than 2 acres just for us with a little lake , a place to play volleyball , a place to play balloon on a pole , and even a disc golf course that we could use with the disks furnished by the host!!! ..the restroom where the cleanest that I ever seen with , not one , but two showers and two restrooms And the showers were present with hot water. Everything was so clean. I could not believe it !! And the land: I thought for a moment that I was camping on a par 3 of Pebble Beach California !!! in supplement we had the right to pick up fruits from trees: Lemons, limes, oranges, finger, lemons, tangerines, and others !! We even had a very nice dog name Knob! That came and welcome us, and was really great with us!! In all, this was the best IPC experience that we ever had up to now! Thanks Mae! Jeff and Suzan

Just on the other side of the mountain awaits sprawling mountain views, Punalu'u Bakery, and a gorgeous black sand beach featuring one of the few places in the world that hosts a sea turtle resting sanctuary and viewing area. And there is always the coconut guy to show you how it's done! Hilo Bay is a 20+ minute drive, boasts waterfront shopping, fantastic restaurants and bakeries, a daily farmer's market and much more. Just north of Hilo is the scenic Hamakua Coast where you can hike through the rainforest and Waipio Valley Lookout, complete with wild horses. Back at Volcano, there a few things of note: The weather is TYPICALLY 72°-61°, not too windy or overcast. It can also be rainy for extended periods. Cabin is secluded, primitive, rustic, off-grid. There is a twin bed, mosquito net, dresser, room for a sleeping bag and a bathhouse with toilet/solar shower. Device charging available. A case of bottle water is included. Potable water included for duration of your stay. BONUS...I also have no nearby neighbors. The most useful part of your adventure is the locals.
