The spaceWe started our Homestead over 7 years ago on a lava 3 zone in an O'hia forest. We're conveniently situated between Volcano National Park, Historic Pahoa Village, and Hilo's Port Town. We were suggested by many after our first 5 years here to open our homestead to others looking for a simple reprieve from the weight of the go-go world with hopes that people leave more connected to go with the flow. We hope by welcoming you to our homebase for your Big Island adventures we'll be able to help connect more people to the biophilia that has brought such tranquility to our lives. Aloha Aina!!
Your private space is a 20'x10' raised cabin that offers covered outdoor space as well as indoor accommodations. You will find the inside furnished with two full spring mattress bunk beds, a small eating bar overlooking our backyard area with two stool seats, a personal work area with an accommodating cooler for perishables (Please provide ice or we can arrange for block ice from our local general store if desired), and personal clothing storage, as well as wi-fi options. Your private cabin space does have full electricity separate from the commons, but still off grid so please refrain from using strong energy draw items like hair wands or instant heaters, such electrical items are not suited for off-grid electrical systems.
Our Common space is open from 7a.m.-10p.m. During this time, you will have full access to a shared kitchen, as well a full bathroom with both an indoor and outdoor shower. The bathroom is available around the clock but after-hours hot water is off so please be aware if you're planning on taking a midnight shower. Please let us know if you need any amenities such as hot water or wi-fi after 10p.m. or before 7a.m. Please make note of these times and being off grid means that we schedules use of high energy items with the daylight hours, and we will set a timer for your convenience of smaller items like internet with advanced notice, otherwise we are very energy efficient in the commons, this is hipcamp, so please don't mistake us for a Hilton :)
We are currently home to 4 wonderful dogs that may greet you as you drive up, 3 spectacular cats, 1 mischievous parrots, 3 goats, 12 chickens and 1 rooster. So please know there are animals present than are part of our Ohana.
We ask for you to take into consideration that we are a "Working homestead" and we are "Off Grid" so there will be projects much like any farm setting, for this reason we are not suitable for infants or young Children. There are animals that can make noises, there are mulch piles always moving around, compost piles that might not be your cup of tea because they smell, but they certainly make great compost teas to help the flowers grow that smell beautiful right outside your window! There are small projects that may look like clutter, such as seed saving, or canning, but those small clutters grow the plants that fill those jars! On occasion we have people who overlook this reality of nature and our connection to it... possibly because they've seen too many staged reality shows or maybe they have never visited a real farm in person before, but we are grateful that the overwhelming majority of people who have had this attitude have left with an appreciation for nature many expressed they never knew they had!! Those guests have filled our hearts with their kind gratitude :) This is a place full of joyful work for us, so please understand we are a destination for many who love nature, and if you're afraid of dirt or nature in general, this might be a great opportunity to connect with what has always been waiting for you to discover!!
Guest accessThe last two blocks into our homestead are rock road as we are a rural location. We will provide a map upon booking with the best access through our Ag-lots for your convenience. Please travel safe and plan for our check-in between 3p.m. and 9p.m. with early and late check-in avalible with approved notice :) Parking is available to either side at the end of the driveway.
Other things to noteAlittle about our homestead;Please understand that we are off-grid, and while we've been off grid 8 years now, we've only been hosting stays like this for 3 years, and we see that we are a destination for many visitors looking for a nature bathing kind of experience, but it's not everyone' cup of coffee... Sooo speaking of coffee, if you are looking for things like an General Electric coffee pot or any electric coffee maker (that are literally designed to wastes energy to just make money) we probably aren't the best fit for your stay ... BUT ... If you want to experience home grown Cacao added to fresh ground coffee brewed Italian style to make an amazing Mocha, FRESH, then we can easily make that while showing you some great energy saving ideas to take home :) like make coffee the way our great grandparents made coffee, it tastes better and is really easier than one may think! We share some toasted homemade sourdough bread out of fresh harvested stocks too, but it again isn't an energy guzzling shinny toaster that does the toasting, it is a cast iron skillet that we toast on, just like our great grandparents did too... Actually one of my favorite skillets belonged to my Great Grandma, so this is the real deal :) Come up and join us when we turn the commons on at 7a.m. if you're interested. We have very little light pollution which will afford beautiful star gazing on clear nights, and epic full moons!! But this means that you should use a flashlight or headlamp which we can provide at your leisure. We don't poop in a bucket in the woods, we actually have a working toilet, and Hot water for showers, a gas powered full range stove. But we also compost and make methane for 100% green energy use... There are chickens and goats, parrots, Dogs & Cats. We have been told by some that it is too cluttered, and by others you make me our home look clean our kitchen table (3'x9') always has some sort of a project on it. One guest said they were so happy to see so much going on as they sat watching us make bread, while another was upset that they didn't have a private kitchen. We feel we are very affordable for what we have to share, and if you feel this description will not fit your needs, then please don't book us because we're affordable. Trust us if we could offer a private kitchen it would only raise our price. We really hope more than anything to share and inspire what a homestead is, and that even in a suburb, or a rural apartment there are small things we can do to save energy and bring ourselves closer to nature!!

For guests unfamiliar with the Big Island, it is not like the other islands people travel to. If Oahu is more Americanized, the Big Island is still more of a Polynesian Island. Our property allows guests to enjoy a genuine local experience.
The cabins have power and endless hot water. All water on property is rainwater harvested from our roof!
At night your ears will be greeted by the forest with sounds of coqui frogs. Many people love them 🐸 Please search for Bathing Suits and Rain Boots on YouTube to find a video of what our property sounds like at night. Our channel also features videos of tours we offer. More to be uploaded, check back often! Our tours include off the beaten path adventures ranging from sunrises and geothermal Kings baths, to prawn hunting to hikes that lead to waterfalls! They are all local gems that you will not find online or offered by any other tour guide agency. We are updating our ig @bathingsuitsandrainboots regularly with footage from adventures as well!
Beach gear such as surf boards, boogie boards and snorkel gear is also available. There is a detailed welcome packet with a variety of mostly free but some paid must see/do activities on the island!
There are a total of 4 cabins on the one acre lot. The owners are on property, other guests may or may not be here as well. There is a dog Valentine, two outdoor cats named Ghost and Tomi, and chickens/ducks.
Each cabin has a queen mattress. We rent both cabins out for larger groups.
Jungle massages are available on site starting at $100 for the hour.

We are at 1880ft elevation so it can get chilly at night. Winters are also rainy season so if traveling to the Big Island in the winter, I suggest some light layers for warmth, a raincoat and rain boots.

We're conveniently situated between Volcano National Park, Historic Pahoa Village, and Hilo's Port Town. We were suggested by many after our first 5 years here to open our homestead to others looking for a simple reprieve from the weight of the go-go world with hopes that people leave more connected to go with the flow. We hope by welcoming you to our homebase for your Big Island adventures we'll be able to help connect more people to the biophilia that has brought such tranquility to our lives. Aloha Aina!!
Your private space is a 20'x10' raised cabin that offers covered outdoor space as well as indoor accommodations. You will find the inside furnished with two full spring mattress bunk beds, a small eating bar overlooking our backyard area with two stool seats, a personal work area with an accommodating cooler for perishables (Please provide ice or we can arrange for block ice from our local general store if desired), and personal clothing storage, as well as wi-fi options. Your private cabin space does have full electricity separate from the commons, but still off grid so please refrain from using strong energy draw items like hair wands or instant heaters, such electrical items are not suited for off-grid electrical systems.
Our Common space is open from 7a.m.-10p.m. During this time, you will have full access to a shared kitchen, as well a full bathroom with both an indoor and outdoor shower. The bathroom is available around the clock but after-hours hot water is off so please be aware if you're planning on taking a midnight shower. Please let us know if you need any amenities such as hot water or wi-fi after 10p.m. or before 7a.m. Please make note of these times and being off grid means that we schedules use of high energy items with the daylight hours, and we will set a timer for your convenience of smaller items like internet with advanced notice, otherwise we are very energy efficient in the commons, this is hipcamp, so please don't mistake us for a Hilton :)
We are currently home to 4 wonderful dogs that may greet you as you drive up, 3 spectacular cats, 1 mischievous parrots, 3 goats, 12 chickens and 1 rooster. So please know there are animals present than are part of our Ohana.
We ask for you to take into consideration that we are a "Working homestead" and we are "Off Grid" so there will be projects much like any farm setting, for this reason we are not suitable for infants or young Children. There are animals that can make noises, there are mulch piles always moving around, compost piles that might not be your cup of tea because they smell, but they certainly make great compost teas to help the flowers grow that smell beautiful right outside your window! There are small projects that may look like clutter, such as seed saving, or canning, but those small clutters grow the plants that fill those jars! On occasion we have people who overlook this reality of nature and our connection to it... possibly because they've seen too many staged reality shows or maybe they have never visited a real farm in person before, but we are grateful that the overwhelming majority of people who have had this attitude have left with an appreciation for nature many expressed they never knew they had!! Those guests have filled our hearts with their kind gratitude :) This is a place full of joyful work for us, so please understand we are a destination for many who love nature, and if you're afraid of dirt or nature in general, this might be a great opportunity to connect with what has always been waiting for you to discover!!
Guest accessThe last two blocks into our homestead are rock road as we are a rural location. We will provide a map upon booking with the best access through our Ag-lots for your convenience. Please travel safe and plan for our check-in between 3p.m. and 9p.m. with early and late check-in avalible with approved notice :) Parking is available to either side at the end of the driveway.
Other things to noteAlittle about our homestead;Please understand that we are off-grid, and while we've been off grid 8 years now, we've only been hosting stays like this for 3 years, and we see that we are a destination for many visitors looking for a nature bathing kind of experience, but it's not everyone' cup of coffee... Sooo speaking of coffee, if you are looking for things like an General Electric coffee pot or any electric coffee maker (that are literally designed to wastes energy to just make money) we probably aren't the best fit for your stay ... BUT ... If you want to experience home grown Cacao added to fresh ground coffee brewed Italian style to make an amazing Mocha, FRESH, then we can easily make that while showing you some great energy saving ideas to take home :) like make coffee the way our great grandparents made coffee, it tastes better and is really easier than one may think! We share some toasted homemade sourdough bread out of fresh harvested stocks too, but it again isn't an energy guzzling shinny toaster that does the toasting, it is a cast iron skillet that we toast on, just like our great grandparents did too... Actually one of my favorite skillets belonged to my Great Grandma, so this is the real deal :) Come up and join us when we turn the commons on at 7a.m. if you're interested. We have very little light pollution which will afford beautiful star gazing on clear nights, and epic full moons!! But this means that you should use a flashlight or headlamp which we can provide at your leisure. We don't poop in a bucket in the woods, we actually have a working toilet, and Hot water for showers, a gas powered full range stove. But we also compost and make methane for 100% green energy use... There are chickens and goats, parrots, Dogs & Cats. We have been told by some that it is too cluttered, and by others you make me our home look clean our kitchen table (3'x9') always has some sort of a project on it. One guest said they were so happy to see so much going on as they sat watching us make bread, while another was upset that they didn't have a private kitchen. We feel we are very affordable for what we have to share, and if you feel this description will not fit your needs, then please don't book us because we're affordable. Trust us if we could offer a private kitchen it would only raise our price. We really hope more than anything to share and inspire what a homestead is, and that even in a suburb, or a rural apartment there are small things we can do to save energy and bring ourselves closer to nature!!

At night your ears will be greeted by the forest with sounds of coqui frogs. Many people love them 🐸 Please search for Bathing Suits and Rain Boots on YouTube to find a video of what our property sounds like at night. Our channel also features videos of tours we offer. More to be uploaded, check back often! Our tours include off the beaten path adventures ranging from sunrises and geothermal Kings baths, to prawn hunting to hikes that lead to waterfalls! They are all local gems that you will not find online or offered by any other tour guide agency. We are updating our ig @bathingsuitsandrainboots regularly with footage from adventures as well!
Beach gear such as surf boards, boogie boards and snorkel gear is also available. There is a detailed welcome packet with a variety of mostly free but some paid must see/do activities on the island!
There are a total of 4 cabins on the one acre lot. The owners are on property, other guests may or may not be here as well. There is a dog Valentine, two outdoor cats named Ghost and Tomi, and chickens/ducks.
Each cabin has a queen mattress. We rent both cabins out for larger groups.
Jungle massages are available on site starting at $100 for the hour.
Please note the main image capturing a lava cliff sunrise is not visible from the cabin. It is about a 30-40 minute drive from us 🌊 ☀️ 🌋
We are at 1880ft elevation so it can get chilly at night. Winters are also rainy season so if traveling to the Big Island in the winter, I suggest some light layers for warmth, a raincoat and rain boots.

Rainforest Haven is located in Fern Forest, a rural neighborhood, on three verdant acres of rainforest with ōhiʻa lehua trees, tree ferns, banana plants, and fruit trees at 2100 feet. This is a peaceful place to relax and recuperate from the din of city life—quiet hours are from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. There are no street lights, just the stars and moon after sunset. On a clear night, the sky is full of stars. The yurt has its own bathroom with a shower, flushing toilet and vanity sink, as does the cabin. There is a large, well-equipped communal kitchen cabin (16' x 16'), an additional outdoor shower and a washing machine that guests can use free of charge. There is an outdoor lounge area complete with a six-person picnic table, BBQ, and four hammocks. The owner lives on the premises. The homestead is run by 6,000 watt solar-power and a rain-catchment system with a 4,500 gallon water tank.
Volcano National Park is only 15 minutes away; Punaluʻu black sand beach is 30 minutes; Ka Lae (South Point) is about 1.5 hours; and Hoʻokena Bay is about 2 hours. We are closest to Hilo (45 minutes). Kona is a 2.5 hour drive.

I had the greatest time here, it will be hard to summarize! Justine is an excellent communicator and I had no trouble finding my way to her place and around the campsite. As a host, she is generous and welcoming–sharing tips and travel suggestions, and just being warm and easy to talk to.
The space is well thought-out and had everything I needed to camp out of my small tent (I had my own camp stove, so didn't use the outdoor kitchen, but made good use of the picnic table area, electricity and outdoor shower.) I really appreciated the farm tour, tasting some of the land's treats and being able to feed the chickens my food scraps.
I added on a breakfast which was deliciously made with local ingredients, and wish I could have extended my trip to stay longer. As a solo female traveller, I felt very safe camping here. Overall: great location, good deal for what you get, and best host!

We love staying at Patrick and Brian's. This was our second time. Warm, generous hosts. Clean, comfy facilities. If you're a fan of ecology or permaculture, the property is a delight. So many incredible fruit-bearing trees and plants. Loved eating their homemade lilikoi butter on pancakes in the morning! I forgot my kava tea at home and they even helped me with some of their homegrown kava! Did the trick. We slept well. Will return

This was my landing place before spending the rest of my time camping on the island. The bed in the yurt was very comfy (I had the best nights of sleep!) and had just enough space for my things. I really enjoyed the kitchen and outdoor seating area that looked out to the ocean, and I especially enjoyed the nice hot shower.
I was a little confused with the parking (I initially parked in the area that was meant for the other lodging sites) as I didn't see the "yurt" on the signs pointing to the other parking area. Even though I ran into a staff member who ended up helping me find my way, I was given a very impersonal and rushed overview of where things were (bathrooms, kitchen, washrooms, etc.).

We booked car camping but were so lucky to have upgraded to the dome! Justine's farm offered everything we needed for a restful stay. Car camping would have been fun too but we definitely enjoyed the clamping option to sleep in a comfortable bed at night. Temperature was perfect in the dome at night, and it felt so breezy even without a fan! We had some much needed amazing sleep during our five days on Justine's beautiful land. She's an amazing chef and shared so many tips on island life with us, which will help us to start planing our own home on the island. We were really well taken care of, and appreciate everything Justine had to offer! Can't wait to return when we visit again.

10 nights at The Tranquil Homestead
We had an amazing stay at this off-grid homestead and can see why it had such amazing reviews. The hosts, Esther and Christopher were truly lovely - relaxed, down to earth, and made everything feel easy from the moment we arrived. We really appreciated accommodating us when we arrived late.
The setting is something special: tucked into a beautiful rainbow eucalyptus rainforest with giant ferns and native trees, that made mornings feel so peaceful. It felt calm and restorative, with the gentle sounds of nature at night and a sky full of stars. We certainly lucked out being able to enjoy Hawai'i the way it was intended to be enjoyed.
The location is also perfect if you’re visiting Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park and being in the laid back local town of Hilo. Being so close made it easy to explore the park and come back to a quiet, tranquil place to unwind. We also loved the homestead touches! The sweet ducks, Jasper, Mable and June (peacocks) were a highlight, and it felt like a genuinely unique, memorable experience.
If you’re looking for a calm, nature-filled stay near the volcano, this place is a gem. We would absolutely come back.

The Cabana had soft white solar lighting. Loved that. The people were amazing. Caroline and Lisa are super helpful. And incredibly welcoming. I booked a bunch of places to stay on the island and this one has been the friendliest. Great amenities. Swam in the Beautiful waterfall. Wouldn't change a thing.

Weekend Trip to Hamakua Guesthouse
We really enjoyed this hip camp and the stay was fun and luxurious. The host and manager Acacia was very friendly and helpful and she even took the time to learn our names. Also there were many kitties that lived on the property and a particular cat named Mr. Cuddles was friendly and he visited us often at Cabana number 3 where we stayed. The Cabanas themselves were so much fun and the hammocks were very comfortable with good pillows and warm blankets.

Our host, Nancy greeted us warmly when we arrived and helped us to find the entrance to the property. The bungalow was very private and cozy. We loved waking up to an incredible view of the ocean! There was a lot of cool wildlife around, including lizards, wild pigs, and parakeets. Unfortunately, we had a cloudy sky at night, but given clearer conditions, the bungalow would have been perfect for stargazing, and there was even a telescope available for us to use. One thing to note, there is a long, grassy, uphill driveway to the property. We arrived in a brand new BMW convertible and suffusive to say that was not the right car for this location.

This is an awesome spot! I think this is exactly what a hip camp should be: feels remote, special, private, and very comfortable. Mae has you covered in so many ways. We arrived at the end of a light rain shower, and were so happy to find a covered set of table and chairs under her dome that were bone dry! The place is right off 11, which gets you to Hilo or the National Park. A nice hot outdoor shower with a view of the ocean! Can't get much better than that to start your day.
