Rent a four-wheel-drive to get there, but you don’t need 4WD to get to our place, but you do need to rent an SUV or truck with high clearance. No sedans. Go slow the road is rough and bumpy in places..

The nearest grocery store is about 3 miles away. The Hele-On Bus is just 1.2 miles up the road. If you want to drive to the green sand beach at the end of our road, rent a 4 wheel drive. If you are athletic, you can walk, but it is 4 miles down and 4 miles back. I recommend going early in the morning and take water.
Hot water shower is propane. Bring ice for your ice chest. Bring drinking water. There is a gas grill and propane single burner. Bathroom has manual flush toilet,.
This is off the grid solar and there can be days without sun, or other glitches. You can charge your phone and have a lamp in your cabin. No wifi. I use ATandT and I understand that Verizon and T-Mobile work here also.
The panoramic ocean view is spectacular! Very peaceful and relaxing!
Our glamping cabins are in the front 3 acres. The back 17 acres is an old Ohia forest with 500 year old trees and lots of birds. You might even see a wild goat or a wild pig. There are small caves and gorgeous rock formations. It backs up to Manuka Forest Reserve.

This treehouse was a magical jungle DREAM! There are windows everywhere, allowing tons of natural light in as well as lovely views of the forest/greenery all around. If you want to sleep in, bring an eye mask because the bedroom is at the top of the treehouse and gets bright early (wasn’t a problem for us because we were getting up early anyway so waking up naturally to the morning light was nice). At night the frogs are loud but we enjoyed falling asleep to them. Everything about the bed is AMAZING—the mattress, pillows, and bedding are all wonderful. The vibe of the treehouse is so cozy and peaceful. We wish we could’ve stayed more than one night. It is a bit expensive but once you get there, you’ll see why. Absolutely book this place.
(The ONLY issue we had was initially finding the place. The directions say to look for a gazebo but there is definitely no gazebo. There’s a little carport out front but since we were looking for a gazebo we didn’t think we were art the right place.)

Excellent service. Friendly and acommodating. This is a remote part of the Big Island... I did not have a rental car...but the host(s) helped take me to the nearby village of Naahlehu, and also helped me get back to Kona airport for my departure. This is rustic tiny house....but all I needed for my stay and VERY reasonable price, compared to Kona Coast hotels & AirBnB's. I will stay there again when I fly to Big Island to see my relatives.

Thomas’ land/cottage is the perfect place for a remote, comfortable night close to Volcano National Park. He is a very gracious host and willing to assist you in any way necessary. I definitely would recommend this to anyone looking for a cheap, yet comfortable place to stay.

Andi was an amazing host. She met us at the gate to make sure we had the right place, showed us the property and its amenities, and had delicious and comforting tea ready for us.
She was very warm and welcoming. I would come back to stay there the next time we are on the Big Island!

4 nights at Skyes Treehouses
This was absolutely the MOST BEAUTIFUL and whimsical vacation rental my wife and I have ever had. I am a treehouse aficionado and builder and I really appreciated the totally private setting, the sturdy construction that integrated perfectly with the natural environment and natural ohi’a trunks, the huge French doors and screens on 3 sides of the house, the multiple decks which stayed dry even during downpours, the comfortable bed, and the kitchy artwork.
It would have been helpful to have written instructions on how to use the hot water system, how to operate the ceiling fan, how to start the propane heater, and how to light the wood stove and where to find more wood. The kitchen equipment was rudimentary, but serviceable. Some staple spices and herbs and more utensils would have made using the kitchen for simple meal prep easier. While we had guidebooks to help our sightseeing and eating out, some current, local recommendations would have been helpful.
That said, we had a WONDERFUL stay, and would return in a heartbeat.

2 nights at Gingerhill Farm Retreat
Gingerhill Farm Retreat was the most amazing and perfect authentic, raw and true experience! Sylvia met me at my car and guided me up the grassy path past the goats and chickens to show me the delightful facilities, the outdoor shower so delicious, the community kitchen with the am8’g view of the Pacific, and the simple sleep accommodation in the yurt! I fely at all times I was there as if I was sunk into the lush paradise that surrounded me. I will return if ever I am able and stay as long as I possibly can!

We stayed in a campervan on the old tennis court. It was the perfect place to camp in a van, level, no bugs, close to amenities and an ocean view. Picking macadamia nuts and swimming in the pool were highlights for the kids. The property is in a great area with lots of activities. Highly recommend.

The tree frog serenade must be heard to be believed. If you're looking for an inexpensive and beautiful place to stay near Volcanoes, Yip Camp is great -- has a marine toilet, an enclosed shower with hot water, and Thomas keeps fresh batteries in numerous lanterns for you to use. They're in the middle of a fern and 'ohia tree forest. Thomas and Yip the dog are friendly and courteous. Don't be put off by the drive on a dirt road -- there are plenty of those in Big Island upcountry!

This is a special place, accessible, private and well maintained. The yip cottage with a hot shower is fun and well appointed. Even with other campers on site there was plenty of room and privacy. The cool night temperatures made it restful. Mahalo, Tom for the great conversations and hosting. I enjoyed the stay!
