Yip Camp provides a setting that promotes immersion in nature. The property is located on the Kilauea Volcano at about 2700 feet in elevation and in sight of the majestic Mauna Loa volcano rising at the peak at 13,680 feet. Both volcanos have been active recently. There are several trails at the National Park nearby; trails and several species of birds live on the property including Japanese Pheasants. Southern Comfort is within 1 hour from Kīlauea Volcanoes National Park, approximately 10 minutes to volcano Park Kahuku Unit, 9 miles to South Point, 10 minutes into Naalehu town, and the perfect mid-point between Kona and Hilo. Thomas was incredibly accommodating as we booked this cabin last minute so that we could spend more time on the east side of the Big Island without having to drive back to Kona. He was there to greet us in the evening when we arrived after a day at the park, and was there to send us off as we continued on our journey in the morning. This cabin provides more of a camping feel as the property is off the grid, but you'll find all the essentials such as a full sized bed, linens, warm shower and a toilet. If you're like me and attract mosquitos, bringing a mosquito net may be useful as well.

3 nights at Skyes Treehouses

So the “secret treehouse” is quite a treat. It’s SUPER secluded with nothing but the sound of rainforest creatures to keep you company. You can’t see lights from anything but the night sky when it gets dark. It’s got four porches, all covered, as well as a GIANT outdoor covered gathering area under the house itself. The sleeping loft is comfortable even for adults as long as you’re okay climbing a ladder, but the main floor also has a queen bed for those who don’t want to climb. Kitchen is well appointed and useful, though be prepared for no dishwasher (it’s a treehouse!). Half bath on the main floor, but the full bath is on the “ground” level, so you’re doing steps down to shower. This place is simply incredible. So cozy, but has pretty much everything you need including fast internet. Well, no dishwasher and no laundry (but the closest pay laundry is between there and the entrance of Volcanoes National Park, which is pretty close). There’s a bit of a haul through the woods to get your stuff to the treehouse, but it’s WORTH IT! Definitely hoping to get back and stay in this place again.

Weekend Trip to Yip Camp and Eco-Retreat Center

Tom was absolutely wonderful—so accommodating, even when we booked his cottage at the last minute! He made us coffee in the morning, gave us a lovely tour of the property, and was such a joy to chat with. He even sent us home with fresh fruit and flowers! The cottage itself was cozy and comfortable, and I was especially happy to find the shower had nice hot water. Highly recommend!

We loved visiting with Thomas! We had so much fun feeding the chickens they were so cute and small.And we also loved feeding the koi fish.And at night we heard frogs.The shower was warm which we appreciated after a sweaty day exploring the national park. It rained mostly every day but we were dry inside. Our 8 year old loved sleeping in the loft. When we drove onto the property, there was a big sign to beware of dog…. The reality was a teeny dog named Yip which gave us all a big laugh. Yip has a big bark and personality and does not bite :)
