Enjoy the country life in Kau on the Big Island and the lovely red Lehua flowers blooming. We live on 20 acres on Road to the Sea, which has a remote green sand beach at the end of the road (4 miles down from us). We call our slice of paradise, Honua Laa (a sacred place). Straight down to the coast is a beautiful black and green sand beach and a huge tide pool. Rent a four-wheel-drive to get there, but you don’t need 4WD to get to our place, just go slow the road is gravel and bumpy. Off the grid. Rustic, but fun. If you are a Eco tourist or seeking adventure, you will love our spot! The silence is golden and the stars are amazing. Don't expect a hotel...this is upcountry glamorous camping. It's one-of-a-kind! Most of the parcels are 20 acre parcels around… But a few smaller parcels across the road. We have nice neighbors who keep an eye on things. The nearest grocery store is about 3 miles away. The Hele-On Bus is just 1.2 miles up the road. If you want to drive to the green sand beach at the end of our road, rent a 4 wheel drive. If you are athletic, you can walk, but it is 4 miles down and 4 miles back. I recommend going early in the morning and take water. Hot water shower is propane. Bring ice for your ice chest. Bring drinking water. There is a gas grill and propane single burner. Bathroom has manual flush toilet,. This is off the grid solar and there can be days without sun, or other glitches. You can charge your phone and have a lamp in your cabin. No wifi. I use ATandT and I understand that Verizon and T-Mobile work here also. The panoramic ocean view is spectacular! Very peaceful and relaxing! Our glamping cabins are in the front 3 acres. The back 17 acres is an old Ohia forest with 500 year old trees and lots of birds. You might even see a wild goat or a wild pig. There are small caves and gorgeous rock formations. It backs up to Manuka Forest Reserve.

The Outpost

48mi from Captain Cook · 1 site · Lodging · Volcano, HI
Aloha and welcome to Volcano on the Big Island of Hawaii, where a slower pace is our lifestyle! My 6-acre farmstead is a mostly undeveloped, secluded jungle with a bit of forest. Enjoy your morning with local coffee or tea, and the many native birds who call it home and a variety of free-range, engaging farm animals. Be an explorer! Create your own trails, and see what secrets this beautiful, untamed jungle has to offer. There is always a relaxing spot on Bear's island, offering a shady perimeter of large native trees, a nice place for some sun or an evening fire to sit back, talk story and be amazed by the millions of stars unseen anywhere else on the planet. If you enjoy a farming or gardening experience, there is never a shortage of options. Just a few short miles away is Kilauea volcano (I'm on the safe side of the rift zone), which began erupting December 2024. Often shooting lava 1,000 feet above the caldera rim, it is a force of nature rarely seen by most. Just on the other side of the mountain awaits sprawling mountain views, Punalu'u Bakery, and a gorgeous black sand beach featuring one of the few places in the world that hosts a sea turtle resting sanctuary and viewing area. And there is always the coconut guy to show you how it's done! Hilo Bay is a 20+ minute drive, boasts waterfront shopping, fantastic restaurants and bakeries, a daily farmer's market and much more. Just north of Hilo is the scenic Hamakua Coast where you can hike through the rainforest and Waipio Valley Lookout, complete with wild horses. Back at Volcano, there a few things of note: The weather is TYPICALLY 72°-61°, not too windy or overcast. It can also be rainy for extended periods. Cabin is secluded, primitive, rustic, off-grid. There is a twin bed, mosquito net, dresser, room for a sleeping bag and a bathhouse with toilet/solar shower. Device charging available. A case of bottle water is included. Potable water included for duration of your stay. BONUS...I also have no nearby neighbors. The most useful part of your adventure is the locals. We know all the best spots to visit not found in guidebooks! Please feel free to address special needs or request. Book your stay today and see for yourself why the Big Island truly is paradise🤙🏻
