This is a breathtaking space that our family has poured many decades and multiple generations into. We are surrounded by jungle, with a freshwater stream running through the entire property and unobstructed mountain views. If you’re especially sensitive to mosquitos, bugs, geckos, free roaming chickens or other elements to be expected in nature, this might not be the place for you.
Waimanalo is a small agricultural town filled with nurseries, horse stables, and a high concentration of Hawaiian homes. It remains mostly undeveloped and authentic, and we aim to keep it that way. Outsiders do not often get the opportunity to stay back here, but we welcome respectful travelers looking for an authentic experience who can appreciate this privilege.
While nestled against the mountains, we're just a five minute drive from the beach. We are fifteen minutes from Kailua town, where you'll find several grocery stores, shops, and restaurants.
This is a working farm. While we are very hospitable, we are not in the business of hospitality. I am happy to accommodate travelers, but I am not here at your beck and call. If that is the experience you are seeking, I think you would be happier elsewhere. We appreciate all of your bookings, and profits go directly back into farm infrastructure and new fruit trees. For guests unfamiliar with the Big Island, it is not like the other islands people travel to. If Oahu is more Americanized, the Big Island is still more of a Polynesian Island. Our property allows guests to enjoy a genuine local experience.
The cabins have power and endless hot water. All water on property is rainwater harvested from our roof!
At night your ears will be greeted by the forest with sounds of coqui frogs. Many people love them 🐸 Please search for Bathing Suits and Rain Boots on YouTube to find a video of what our property sounds like at night. Our channel also features videos of tours we offer. More to be uploaded, check back often! Our tours include off the beaten path adventures ranging from sunrises and geothermal Kings baths, to prawn hunting to hikes that lead to waterfalls! They are all local gems that you will not find online or offered by any other tour guide agency. We are updating our ig @bathingsuitsandrainboots regularly with footage from adventures as well!
Beach gear such as surf boards, boogie boards and snorkel gear is also available. There is a detailed welcome packet with a variety of mostly free but some paid must see/do activities on the island!
There are a total of 4 cabins on the one acre lot. The owners are on property, other guests may or may not be here as well. There is a dog Valentine, two outdoor cats named Ghost and Tomi, and chickens/ducks.
Each cabin has a queen mattress. We rent both cabins out for larger groups.
Jungle massages are available on site starting at $100 for the hour.

We are at 1880ft elevation so it can get chilly at night. Winters are also rainy season so if traveling to the Big Island in the winter, I suggest some light layers for warmth, a raincoat and rain boots.

We have a hidden exotic fruit orchard tucked away through rolling green hills, perched over the Hamakua cliffs, overlooking the pacific.
We sell our fruits ripe and cut ready to eat at our roadside fruit stand, open 11-6 daily including holidays! We serve local fresh juices and machete open coconuts to drink ice cold.
We grow mango, durian, lilikoi, star fruit, chocolate sapote, buddhas hand citrus, finger limes, tangerines and tangelos, jackfruit, tree grapes, mangosteen, white pineapples, mountain apples, berries, spices and much more. We are home to dozens of rescue animals, many who came from Puna during the 2018 lava flow. We have peaceful sheep, lambs, chickens, ducks, turkeys, geese and a lovable pet pig. Not to mention our friendly farm cats.
Our current camp sites are not in the fruit orchard, but in a rolling hills open pasture land near the fruit stand. It is rustic and pastoral.
We are a community of a few passionate farmers and fruit lovers. There’s a family- myself Rose, my partner Matthew and our daughter Mela, plus several awesome guys and girls who help out in different areas to grow our lives together!

Volcano Island Farm is located on the Hamakua Coast of the Big Island of Hawaiʻi. We are 10 minutes from Honokaʻa Town and 20 minutes from Waipiʻo Valley Lookout.
We are a small agricultural farm with gardens, hydroponic greenhouses (coming soon), chickens for eggs, and acres of macadamia nut orchards. Most of the property is open green space with plenty of shade from trees—as long as you don’t mind the occasional falling nut.
We offer two types of camping. Traditional camping is available for guests with their own tent, which can be set up anywhere near the bathhouse in the grass or under a tree.
We also have tents and camping equipment available for use as needed. In addition, we offer the opportunity to stay in our restored Volkswagen van.
The van sleeps a couple very comfortably with a full- to queen-size bed, a swivel chair, and interior lighting. It is cozy and comfortable and includes a picnic table and outdoor lighting in the surrounding area.
The bathhouse is shared among all campers. We typically have no more than four campers at a time, so it is generally easy to share the space. The bathhouse includes a hot shower, sink with mirror, private toilet room, off-grid hot tub (heats in about 20 minutes), and an outdoor deck area for eating or relaxing.
Volcano Island Farm is a calm and quiet retreat from everyday life. We look forward to hosting you and hope you enjoy your relaxing stay. Not an exaggeration we just kept looking around in awe and felt so lucky that this gorgeous place was where we got to spend the night. The bathrooms were SO NICE and the views could not have been better. We're from Utah and are already talking about coming back to camp here. Lex was very helpful and responded very quickly. Weekend Trip to Ember & Fern Retreat
Super cute, cozy, and comfortable. Communication with host was great. Secluded and beautiful flora. We arrived during Nolo and spent our time in the Bee Bungalow, sitting on the covered porch, sipping coffee, listening to the rain and nature sounds as most everything was closed due to the storm. It was a great place to hibernate waiting for the storm to pass. I little slice of heaven.

Host was so kind, very responsive, and even upgraded us to the glamp tent one night since we were arriving late during bad weather. Hammock camping is very doable - lots of big palms to pitch under. Bathroom/shower is clean and just as pictured. Site is quiet and secluded but we felt totally safe. Bring bug spray!

This was my fourth stay at Sun Farm. I love it! I stay there when visiting my daughter, a student at UH Manoa. I appreciate the kindness and responsiveness of the people who work at Sun Farm (shout out to Peter!). I have stayed in three of the four bell tents, and they are clean and very comfortable. When traveling solo, I have felt safe (more so than in Waikiki). My husband and daughter have also spent time there in past trips and they both share my positive feelings about Sun Farm.

2 nights at Sun Farm Hawaii @ Koko Head
I thoroughly enjoyed my stay in the Molokai yurt at Sun Farm (and wish I stayed longer)! The farm is beautiful and the accommodations feel like a mix of camping, hostel experience and farm stay. My yurt was clean and comfortable. The communal kitchen was well equipped and the bathroom/ shower were well maintained. The general area of Sun Farm is great as well. Highly recommend!

The campsite towards the back of the property is tranquil solitude! Amazing bird watching. Loved the dogs and they seemed to love us too. Had everything we needed. Would absolutely stay here again. Oh and all you can eat macadamia nuts.

There’s hipcamp sites and then there’s this place! I’d take this over a resort any day. Incredible property with clean and comfortable facilities, amazing pool and hot tub, and incredible ocean views. Felt lucky to be there. Also loved the very friendly and well behaved dogs. Thanks Shawn and fam!
