San Luis Valley is a region in south-central Colorado with a small portion overlapping into New Mexico. The valley is approximately 122 miles long and 74 miles wide, making it the largest alpine valley in the world. It extends from the Continental Divide on the northwest rim into New Mexico on the south.
This campground sits close to the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo mountain range. I encourage binoculars or even a telescope to view wildlife and check out the Rockies and then the night sky views!
Looking to submerse yourself in nature? The Sangre de Cristo Range in Colorado contains the following 14ers: Blanca Peak, Challenger Point, Crestone Needle, Crestone Peak, Culebra Peak, Ellingwood Point, Humboldt Peak, Kit Carson Peak, Mount Lindsey, and Little Bear Peak.
Great Sand Dunes are visible from every site. With unlimited mountain views, beautiful starry night skies, come see the Milky Way, Eclipse, even Meteor showers!!!
History: this land was originally part of a large cattle ranch in the 1980s. The main ranch is still up and running but this parcel was used for many purposes over the years.
In 2021, we were featured in USA Todays Ten Best for star gazing!
My property has 360 degree mountains views with the Sangre de Cristo Mountain Range as our back yard. Nearby you can find many different trail systems for all kinds of outdoor enthusiasts. From hiking to jeeping, ATV or dirt biking and equestrians - you can find it all!
You will be surrounded by BLM land, BACA land, and Wildlife Refuge just two miles away. Be sure to bring extra bug spray and protection needed against biting insects such as flies, gnats, and mosquitoes.
For those bringing your pets, they MUST be on a leash/lead at all times. While I do not have much cactus on my property, I do have an abundance of greasewood (Chico brush) which is very thorn-like if stepped on.
Accommodations for those with livestock or horses, just make sure you chat in advance your initial message.
Close to BLM, and National Forest as well as 3 hot springs within 20 miles and the Great Sand Dunes.

The Rabbit Hole Ranch offers beautiful night skies with little to no light pollution and unobstructed views of the majestic Blanca Massif. The Great Sand Dunes and Zapata Falls is just a (gorgeous) 35 minute drive.
Camping here at the Rabbit Hole Ranch is primitive and dispersed (no numbered sites) and there 30 acres available for you to use. Just follow the signs to the designated area and pick out a spot you like.
Some spots have fire rings, some don’t. We are working on getting more, but in the meantime you’re welcome to bring your own. Or feel free to dig out a little hole. It works great and is easy to extinguish when you fill it back in and bury it. Please do not bury any trash.
Typically, you will experience a rare kind of solitude and silence that feels…. other-worldly, with incredible sunrises and sunsets filling the enormous skies.
On holidays, however, expect it to be busy.
Our dogs are working dogs and they are more than happy to help keep you and your pets safe. Please help make their jobs easier by not leaving any food or trash in or around tents.
Please keep your pets on leash or under control until you’re comfortably certain they get along with our dogs. And please report any issues promptly.
This year we have a new Great Pyrenees to greet you, her name is Boudicca and she’s excited to meet everyone! Returning this season is 12 year old KayLee, also a GP and and Finn, our little dude from Alaska.
Quiet time begins at 10:00 pm.
Note: Holidays still offer the excellent location and spectacular views, but are likely to be less quiet and far more busy. We typically do not strictly enforce quiet time during holidays.

The master bedroom offers a queen bed, beautiful southerly view, wood-burning stove, spacious sitting area, and opportunity for rejuvenating & relaxing.
We're in the International Dark Sky community. The stars are magnificent. You will be amazed by the vast expanse of the universe.
The Great Sand Dunes National Park - the tallest and most amazing sand dunes in North America - is visible from almost everywhere on our property. Look to the south to see this alternate view. Plan to make a day-trip to the Dunes! Don't forget about the Ziggurat (it's visible from our deck too).

Hi! We are a bright, young family, & small community, developing our 42 acres in Crestone, Colorado. Our property features a host of cottonwood trees, a creek, two outdoor bath houses, a fire pit, a 1.5 acre mini farm in progress. There are two new bell tents, available with up to 3 single beds, or one king. Crestone is a beautiful, remote, high desert wilderness surrounded by classic Colorado (almost) 14-ners with high alpine lakes, rivers, hot springs, rock climbing, mountain biking, and our property borders on the Great Sand Dunes National Park. Crestone is also known for its 30 diverse spiritual centers, incredible star gazing as a official dark sky community, alien sightings, and it's beautiful and unique housing community that focuses on building with reclaimed and natural building methods. Our home, like many of the homes here, is creatively made from recycled materials, using two train cars for the body of the house. The property also hosts a 1200 square foot Dojo, built by the previous owner, a Qi Gong master lineage carrier. We continue use the space for yoga, capoiera, dance and other events. We are completely off grid, using solar power, wood heat and some propane when needed. We aren't on sewer or septic, so this is an opportunity for the understanding of composting toilet and humanure systems. That may seem low-tech overall but, we are blessed with the infinite power of Starlink internet! Great opportunity for part time mobile office types.
Our goals on the property are to enhance our lives, and those in our community, with everything we do here. We had a great time staying out here this past weekend. It was very windy and rainy, but that is to be expected. The property is very calming and open, which is great for the astrophotography we were able to take. Clouds made it difficult, but that isn't Christine's fault! The water from the pump is very rusty, and we opted not to drink/use it. However, there is a Dollar General 6 miles up the road, so it was no big deal! Would definitely recommend staying here.

We absolutely loved our stay at High Peaks! Site 17 was in the perfect corner with no one between our view of the mountains and site itself was big enough to fit two 4-person tents, a 6-person tent and 2 vehicles.
There were a few sites nearby to us, but noise was not an issue. We were lucky enough to not have anyone in the sites next to us at first, but even when campers showed up it was very peaceful. We felt like we had our own private campsite even with it being Labor Day weekend!
The porta-potties were SO clean (probably the cleanest I've been in), and the toilet paper was stocked up until our last day. We appreciated that there was firewood on-site and took advantage of not having to go anywhere. The picnic table was also nice to have, and the potable water on-site was a huge blessing.
Wifi didn't work from our campsite but service was still available for calls & texts. Wind was a slight issue for us the first day, high gusts of up to 15 MPH and we had some difficulty keeping our tents down and no campfires in those conditions. It didn't effect our experience at all after it died down, but I would recommend bringing extra stakes. It also gets very hot with no tree coverage.
Sunrise & sunset had the most incredible 360 views, if you're looking for a beautiful, peaceful environment - stay here!! 10/10 would recommend again.

We had a wonderful time staying here! The land is gorgeous and it was easy to find a great campsite. Perfect for rustic dispersed camping and close to lots of wonderful nature in this corner of Colorado. Would love to stay again!

Amazing location with great mountain views! Sites are spread out so you have plenty of privacy! Our dog loved all the open space she had as well. The 3 working dogs were super friendly and checked up on us throughout the stay. Highly recommend!

Easy to find, great view, and the firepit setup was a big plus. Recently stayed in during a fairly large downpour and the roads were still passable with ease the following day.

Loved RHR! We were the only ones there, which made it really nice and peaceful. The stars were amazing and the working doggos came to hang out with us frequently throughout the day and keep us safe from coyotes. Directions in the reservation and signs along the way were clear and we got there with no problem. We also drove an AWD Subaru Impreza and didn’t have any issues on the road.

Perfect desert style camping! Bring your own shade! ☀️ Thank you for providing water with large tank for the unbeatable camping bathroom experience! A flush toilet and a HOT shower under the incredible starry skies are unmatched! The lake is a 3 min drive or a small hike away. You cannot swim in this lake but there's plenty of beach and you can still fish and be on-water! The small town aboit 12 mins away is perfect for any last minute or forgotten quick grabs.

We had a lovely time at Rabbit Hole Ranch! Directions were clear, the land was beautiful and well maintained, and the dogs and stars were the highlight of our trip! Felt very safe. Highly recommend! Only thing is the porta potty is kinda far away to walk to, you might want to drive, but it wasn’t too much of a hassle. Thanks Jen, KayLee, and Finn!

Jen’s campsite exceeded our expectations! It was true camping with ease! I’m glad we drove in our truck, as we literally off roaded to the spot we wanted. It could get a little tricky out there if we didn’t have a lifted vehicle, I presume. The views are incredible and every morning and evening we couldn’t believe that we were lucky enough to experience it! We walked around the flats, I’m guessing it was once a lake, but there is lots of room to roam. The night sky was absolutely incredible- I have never seen so many stars and milky way! It was primitive camping, so don’t expect the toilet to be close by- we didn’t care. It was very quiet out there- lots of coyotes in the distance, but we felt safe with Jen’s dogs on patrol! Bring lots of stakes as the wind was vicious at points. Short drive to sand dunes and zapata falls, both equal distance in either direction. We grabbed a spot with a fire ring- first come, first serve. Lots of space between sites. We didn’t see the host, so we didn’t feel like we were being micro managed or anything. A couple campers came and went, but everyone was very respectful of lights out/quiet time at 10p! The site was exceptionally clean. We would absolutely come back again.

We loved camping here! We arrived in the middle of the week and didn’t see anyone else out there, other than the two pups that guarded our campsite, until late Friday night. I was in a 2WD car and had no trouble getting there, despite a little bit of rain during our trip (don’t think it would’ve made it as far with a heavy storm though), and it was a quick drive to the national park. Only trouble we had was trying to set up camp at the first site we attempted, where it was really windy (fine for an RV but not great for an ultralight tent). We had no trouble at the second site though, that had a nice hill as a wind block. The sky was indescribable at night - 10/10 recommend!

Such a cool place. Quite far from the sand dunes (maybe a 30-45 minute drive) but still worth it. You truly feel out in the middle of nowhere but there’s still a tiny bit of civilization near you and there’s service! The dogs are so sweet too. Thanks :)

Staying at Rabbit Hole Ranch was great. Jen was very friendly and responsive to questions. Jeff at the campsite was very helpful getting the firewood and answering question. The site had great views and the solitude I was looking for!

This spot is amazing! Close vicinity to the sand dunes, awesome views of the mountains, and great sunsets and stargazing. And a huge bonus, there are dogs! Finn, Kaylee, and Boudicca, hung out with us the whole weekend and even slept outside our tents to keep us safe from coyotes and whatever else wandered around at night. They like treats so definitely pack some. 10/10 definitely coming back.
