One of the Snowbird campsites, along the Timber Lake trail. It was very well maintained. A bull moose walked through my campsite, twice! This is the closest campground to Timber Lake (1/4 mile up the trail) and is very convenient for a dayhike up Mount Ida.

Our 160 acre property is surrounded on all four sides by miles of National Forest. We recently built our cabin/house adjacent to Trout creek which runs through the property. This property was originally homesteaded in the 1800’s. An original two story cabin built in the 1890s still stands on the property. The logs in that cabin are said to have come from “The Meeker Massacre” (one of the last Indian uprisings in the west). We still hay the 60 acre meadow that has fed cows for many years on the property. Campers can expect to see all kinds of wildlife, from large moose to small chipmunks on the property. Hiking around the meadow is a favorite activity of campers, or just relaxing in a rocking chair looking at the beautiful views.

More about this campsite: The site is in a small ranch pasture along the Bear River near willow, birch, and large cottonwood trees. From the campsite there are views of the Flat Top mountains and ancient volcanic necks. Very quiet except for ranch activity and the friendly livestock guardian dogs (who will visit, and they bark to protect the sheep and goats at night) - it's a working ranch and you may have to contend with talkative sheep or dodge the occasional cow pie!

It has a bedroom, full bathroom, living area, and kitchen. It uses electric heat and has a wood stove.

Ute Lodge - At the End of the Road

The Ute Lodge was homesteaded in the 1930’s by Joe Fox who after leaving the military came west to settle in the White River valley. Joe was known for his friendliness, hospitality and wild stories. Today you might find much of the same. From Joe’s day to today it is a place where families come together to get away. The Ute Lodge is now owned by Karl and Mona Maser who celebrated 20 years of ownership summer of 2019! All summer our cabins are filled with guests from all over the US as well as international travelers. One of our favorite things about the summer is our weekly potlucks where we all share an outdoor meal. All of our visitors have a standing invitation to join us around the community campfire at night. From our beautiful private lake (where you can paddle-board, kayak and fish), to immediate access to the Papoose and Crooks Park Trails on National Forest land, as well as the vast variety of wildlife that roams around, you can find what you need here to unplug and get away from it all.

We are located 4 miles from Routt National Forest. You'll arrive at the ranch headquarters and we will either take you to the sheep wagon or give you directions to it. The sheep wagon is nestled in an Aspen grove (on 56 acres) with a creek just 12 feet away. From there, you are 1/4 mile away from the national forest and the wilderness. There are thousands of acres to explore, either by hiking , biking or horseback riding. You are also just minutes away from great trout fishing lakes and streams. While here ask about ranch tours and visiting with our sheep, horses, cows and chickens! There will be cattle or sheep on the property with the sheep wagon. Please note that cell phone service is very limited in the area.

Take your UTV/ATV to town or for a day ride upriver directly from the campsite as the county road to the site allows UTV and ATV riders from town (2 miles from the campsite) to the White River National Forest (more than 40 miles up the river). Raft or tube to town or just to the bridge below the property. Incredible views and wildlife galore. Turkeys often rest in the trees across the river, and it is not uncommon to watch deer tangle antlers during the rut. Eagles nest in the trees across the river and are often seen fishing from the trees directly across from the campsite. The sunsets from this campsite will leave you breathless. Nothing better than camping, relaxing or fishing on the White River!
