Private 35 acre Private Land Restoration Project surrounded by rolling hills, mountain views and open sky. Unlike most campgrounds, our sites are spread far apart to give all visitors a private experience in Nature. The sunsets and sunrises are spectacular year round. Stars and open skies that you'd be hard pressed to find anywhere else in southern California. Just 15 minutes from Temecula wineries, 40 minutes from the alpine, artsy town of Idyllwild in the San Jacinto Mountains, and just 15 minutes from the 215 in Menifee toward Hemet. Best to visit from early autumn to lush springtime where we have great wildflower blooms. Cooperative managers Jim and Dawn host visitors who want to enjoy nature, participate in regenerative gardening all while off-setting their travel footprint. Fees go to our not for profit land restoration which includes planting trees, improving aquifers and enriching the soil. The property is a owned by a restorative co-op (turning a former illegal dump into an oasis of hope) where we invite you to participate in creative local solutions to our larger global problems. * If your group is larger than six adults, pease visit our group listings page. If your group needs special privacy and sound requirements and you'd like to reserve the entirer property, you will need to contact us directly. * Spaces are available on a first come, first serve basis. * Our visitor support pricing is $20 for the first person and $15 for all additional adults. Zephyr Mountain Avocado Grove

3 sites · RVs, Tents22 acres · Wildomar, CA
The area was once going to be developed into farm properties, but only two stick built residents were developed. We purchased this property 4 years ago with a dream of developing a Regenerative Organic farm. Now a 501c3 Animal Sanctuary with 800 Avocado trees, a dozen citrus trees that include, Limes, Grapefruits, Oranges, Satsumas, Lemons, Macadamia nuts, Tangerines, Pomegranates, passion fruit, Dragon Fruit and Kumquats. We are growing 9 different varieties of Avocados; Hass, Reed, Gem, Bacon, Lamb Hass, Fuertas, Pinkertons, Mexicolas and Zutanos. We are a blended family of 6 with 4 girls you may see hiking around the property. We have three dogs, one being an Aussie doodle that is living her best life as a farm dog and loves working on the farm, hunting gopher and squirrel. We have incorporated chickens, guinea fowl, ducks, geese, pot belly pigs and goats. We hope to fill our 21 acre property with citrus and avocado trees as well as rescued farm animals through our 501c3 non profit that support the Regenerative Organic goal. The farm is home to many wildlife on occasion including Coyotes, various Hawks and eagles, bobcats, jackrabbits and squirrels. All these animals play the role for the Regenerative farming.

The Desert Ambassador Camp

2 sites · RVs, Tents3 acres · Yucca Valley, CA
Inspiring sunrises and breathtaking sunsets in the high desert are a magical experience matched only by full moon and starfilled moonless nights. We fell in love with this natural land within minutes of Joshua Tree National Park entrance. We began tent camping on the 2.5 acres with friends on weekends and holidays. Eventually we brought our Airstream (The Desert Ambassador) onto the property as an off grid escape from the city. Our plans are to keep the property as natural and unspoiled as possible and continue to share this unique part of the American landscape with you. We now offer 2 sites, Upper and Lower. They are located on opposite sides of the 2.5 acre property and provide a unique private space to enjoy your time in the desert. Learn more about our land: Get away and relax under the Joshua trees with a glass of wine and a book, hike through the meandering terrain, and gather around a glowing fire-pit at night with your family and friends under the vast night sky. The Desert Ambassador Camp is located in the Southern California high desert, less than a 2 hour drive from the Los Angeles/OC area. This secluded escape is a short distance (2.5 mi) to the West Entrance of Joshua Tree National Park, Covington Flats, and Black Rock hiking/day use areas.  Nestled between the towns of Joshua Tree and Yucca Valley, The Desert Ambassador Camp is just minutes away from near by off-road parks like Johnson Valley OHV and other high desert attractions. Our natural (undeveloped) high desert land boasts dozens of Joshua trees, cactus and wildflowers in addition to, views of rocky foothills to the south and the desert valley to the north and east. You can see wildlife including: jackrabbits, quail, hawks, kangaroo rats, snakes, and coyotes in and around the property. This is a primitive camping site. Bring your tent and/or RV, camping supplies, (plenty of water), and your sense of adventure.

Rock & Tree

17 sites · RVs, Tents36 acres · Perris, CA
It's so nice to "meet you" my name is Taryn and my hubby's name is Anson. We are parents to two-year-old twins, so saying we have our hands full is an understatement. Anson is a folk and blues musician and has traveled all around the U.S. playing his music and I work for a children's book company. One day, we decided that we wanted to live the rest of our lives hosting live music, and events and that's how Rock & Tree began. As the idea grew, we wanted to create an Open Canvas so that the guest could dream up what they wanted on our stage. We moved to the Inland Empire from Santa Monica, in 2017 with the dream of building an open canvas event space out of sustainable, re purposed and natural materials. Our mission is help enrich the culture of Perris, CA by providing a unique venue that takes you away from the hustle and bustle and takes you to a wonderland of nature surrounded by rocks and eucalyptus trees. Anson and I continue to build everything ourselves with the help of our friends and family every now and again. Our process is that we source as much lumber using the dead Eucalyptus trees we have here on the 36 acre property and we are constantly trying to come up with innovative ways to use recycled and donated materials in the venue. During the pandemic, we turned our venue into a campground so we could open up the venue to people who needed to get out into nature. We are now open for daily camping and private events. You can follow our journey on our Instagram.

Private sites RV camping near Highland guide

Overview

East of Los Angeles, Highland is uniquely positioned among a variety of natural ecosystems—both arid desert landscapes and vast forested mountains surround the city. Hike meandering trails through the diverse terrain of San Bernardino National Forest, then, stop at serene mountain lakes for fishing, paddleboarding, or kayaking on the calm waters. Angeles National Forest offers even more trails among the trees, as well as primitive tent camping and RV campsites. Or look for group camping options near the Orange County coast at Caspers Wilderness Park. For a different kind of escape, consider spending a day or two at one of the area’s well-known theme parks—Disneyland, Universal Studios Hollywood, Six Flags Magic Mountain, and Knott’s Berry Farm are all just a few hours away.

Where to go

San Bernardino National Forest

Spanning over 800,000 acres, San Bernardino National Forest is right in Highland’s backyard. One of the biggest highlights is San Gorgonio Mountain (aka “Old Greyback”) among the San Gorgonio Wilderness. It’s the highest mountain in all of Southern California—towering at an elevation of 11,500 ft. The strenuous hike to the top treats adventurers to stunning summit views of the surrounding ponderosa pine and white fir forest. The forest also contains several notable lakes, including Big Bear Lake and Lake Gregory, which offer fishing, boating, and water sports. Both public and private campgrounds near the forest offer RV hookups, picnic tables, and restrooms.

Angeles National Forest

Northwest of Highland, Angeles National Forest is home to Mount San Antonio. Affectionately known as Mount Baldy, the 10,064-foot peak sits among the San Gabriel Mountains. Discover unique landmarks like the Bridge to Nowhere and the ruins of the old Mount Lowe Railway while exploring the trails. This national forest also offers a unique Mediterranean ecosystem that lets campers view natural California wildlife like bobcats, Nelson bighorn sheep, and yellow-backed spiny lizards. More primitive tent campsites in the forest don’t have water; however, there are some that have more modern conveniences like restrooms.

Ronald W. Caspers Wilderness Park

Camping at Ronald W. Caspers Wilderness Park is a year-round treat for wildlife viewing and birdwatching. Walk among the blooming wildflowers in spring and go horseback riding along the park’s many miles of trails. Near the creek, children can enjoy a playground. Ranger-guided nature walks and naturalist programs offer more insight into the local plants and wildlife, like the ring-necked snake and red swamp crayfish. Some RV and tent campsites in the park have water and electric hookups, plus barbecue grills and hot showers. Group campsites and equestrian campgrounds are also available.

When to go

Highland can get hot and arid in the summer with an average temperature in the 90s during July and August. This is a great time for water-based activities at nearby lakes or pools. Winter is colder at higher elevations and in the desert, with snowfall possible in some mountain areas. Some mountain ranges offer skiing and snowboarding during the winter months. While bass fishing is available year-round, anglers may find spring to be the best fishing season. For birdwatchers, the spring and fall migrations bring a great variety of migratory birds like orioles and warblers.
