Weekend Trip to Spirit Walk - Private Retreat

We rented the playhouse as part of our group camping at the entire site and I would highly recommend doing so if you’re planning on group camping here! It was nice to have the extra space/extra bathroom. The house itself was very cute, clean, and well maintained.

Had a great stay here! Except for the first night we had the place to ourselves. The site is close to many things and it’s nice a quiet there. A few things you need to know before booking: 1) We stayed in the sailboat that sleeps 2 (kind of). It was honestly pretty tight for my girlfriend and I as the very back narrows quite a bit. I would say it’s better for 1 person! Note: I’m only 5’8 155lbs and my girlfriend is smaller. 2) A lot of bugs! We expect that while we’re camping so we were fine but if you hate mosquitoes and spiders/webs maybe this place isn’t for you. 3) Pretty bare bones and not much shade coverage so be prepared! We planned on staying on the river most of the days anyway so that wasn’t an issue for us. All that being said- It’s a really fun place to stay and I would recommend it!

Weekend Trip to Kernville Ranch

My partner and I had a wonderful long weekend on Kernville Ranch! A beautiful peaceful little bit of paradise, surrounded by fields of horses and a couple mule friends. The lodging in the Shiny Spartan is cozy and quaint, has all you need for a few nights' stay and then some, including fridge, shower and sinks with hot or cold potable water, AC/heaters, basic utensils/plates/bowls/glasses/cookware, and the griddle which was great to grill some sausages on for dinner! Loved sitting out stargazing on the open patio, greeting the farm animals every morning, and the hot tub next to the creek was such a magical treat! Lots of wildlife including birdsong all day. I recommend bringing some citronella candles as it gets buggy in the evenings! Such a great time! Would love to come back with friends sometime soon. Thank you Amelia and co!

2 nights at Spirit Walk - Private Retreat

This place was amazing! my girlfriend and i were lucky enough to have had the entire place to ourselves the 2 nights we stayed at spirit walk. we loved that john was very intentional about leaving as little human trace as possible when designing this place with a compost toilet, biodegradable everything, outdoor kitchen, etc. i truly felt immersed in nature and left feeling much calmer. also kernville is such a california hidden gem! we’ll definitely be back

Weekend Trip to Okihi- Reimagining The Kern River

We were looking for a camping type experience, but didn't want to lug all the gear with us. So we stayed in one of the rvs. It was fantastic! They have done a great job with restoring some of the native plant life. The farm animals were really fun, and there were lots of wild animals as well. We saw lots of squirrels and rabbits. And heard lots of different birds, including a great horned owl! We chose to stay here because we were also going to Sharktooth Hill aka Ernst Quarry. Al in all a great stay!

Weekend Trip to Underworld Farms

My grandkids had a blast exploring the area. The boat was a bit noisy at night when the wind would blow through but the kids slept through. The solar powered lights were beautiful at night. There’s very little light pollution from city lights, so the stars were amazing!

2 nights at Okihi- Reimagining The Kern River

Nestled by the beautiful Kern River only minutes from the City of Bakersfield lies the hidden gem that is Okihi. We recently enjoyed two relaxing days and nights at this tranquil and serene place. The accommodations were excellent and Katherine was an amazing host. We had fun exploring the grounds, hanging out by the river and getting to know the animals. Who knew such a cool place was right here in our backyard! We’ll definitely be returning to recharge ourselves soon. We highly recommend Okihi to anyone wanting to do the same.

Host was kind! I actually forgot to get gas and she graciously gave me some gas so I had enough to get to station. Rv was clean and well stocked with everything you could need Heater works well, most important thing lol. . Gas fireplace was nice at night. Right on the river and perfect for a fun little adventure.

Weekend Trip to ArtFarm Movie Ranch & Nomad NeXuS

ArtFarm was a lot of fun for us and our teenage girls. We had great time with our doggo having free rein and our cozy cabin still had enough room for board games and meals. Communal kitchen and bathroom were clean and convenient. Our youngest really enjoyed feeding the goats and chickens. Hiking nearby as well. Staff super friendly and accommodating. First time using HipCamp, thanks for a great experience!

Weekend Trip to Spirit Walk - Private Retreat

This land is very well thought out. John didn’t miss a thing! Whether you’re tent camping or staying in the adorable playhouse, he thought of it all. The communal kitchen is equipped with everything so there’s no need to pack oolong items. There are food storage bins as well and a few picnic tables. The deck is beautiful and the lighting is perfect. I stayed in the playhouse and it’s cozy and romantic. It has a private fire pit but I’m guessing anyone can enjoy it. There is even an outdoor shower for those bold enough ;-) The property is private and well kept. I went valentines weekend so it was cold and rained the first night but the second night was clear and the stars were bright. The creek/river was very active and the sound was soothing. You can access it down the path. John wasn’t there but walked me through the property over the phone as if he was right there with me. I HIGHLY recommend visiting, I’ve never experienced anything like it, and quite honestly can’t come up with anything negative to say other than I didn’t stay long enough :-)

This Glampsite is situated by a Jeffery Pine at the far east side of the property. Zip open the flaps and enjoy the river view. In addition to the 14 acres at Okihi, this site boarders 20 MORE county owned acres you can go explore.

1 night at Spectacular A-Frame. Epic views!!

I enjoyed the sunrise over the lake from the deck, the comfy bed, the the warming stove in the family room and the beautiful views. Also the completely fenced in backyard so I didn’t have to worry about my dog. Very friendly and responsive host.

Underworld Farms is a small goat ranch in the Kern River Valley. Surrounded by forestry land, on the Kern River, and on top of what used to be the old town of Whiskey Flat (Later re-named Kernville). There is no end to the beauty, history and adventure all around the property. Life took us to the Kern River Valley after moving out of Los Angeles. We enjoy living in the Southern Sierras immersed in all its natural beauty. The small but magnificent town of Kernville is approximately two and a half miles north of us. Our livestock includes horses, dairy goats, sheep, and rabbits: Most of which are raised and bred as our son's 4H or FFA projects. You may be wondering why our farm is called "Underworld Farms". In a nutshell, since our ranch is on the footprint of the historic town of Whiskey Flat, we just happen to be south of the old Whiskey Flat "Boot Hill" Cemetery. Our "driveway" is the road that led from the old town of Kernville to the cemetery. We hope that you consider parking your RV, van conversion, or trailer on one of our customized spots on the property. Or drive your vehicle and pitch a tent on one of our tent friendly sports. Or enjoy a stay in one of our small cabins. Regardless of what you stay in, you will definitely have a memorable time. The campground is VERY barebones and rural. Critters, bugs, and sometimes fellow Hipcampers can be sparce or prevalent pretty randomly. Because Underworld Farms is a working ranch, you will probably hear livestock noises like horses neighing, sheep and goats calling, and our protector dogs barking from time to time. We encourage you to walk over to the horses and goats and meet them. They especially like when you bring them carrots or apple pieces. The ranch has a double outhouse with a hand washing station sandwiched in between, it is rustic and bare bones. We check it to see if it has paper products, soap, water, and plenty of room in the trash bins. During the hotter months, the "daddy longleg" spiders enjoy infiltrating the outhouses and seem to spin new webs overnight. But they and their webs are harmless and easy to brush off. We ask for your assistance if there is something missing, or the trash needs taking out, or if the spiders have taken over again by getting ahold of us through the Hipcamp App and letting us know. With all that being said, there is an ambient beauty here that is unbelievable and memorable. This beauty and draw is so powerful that it causes the many people who come visit to make arrangements to live in our little valley. There is much to do in and around our valley that you couldn't do it all in a lifetime. We hope that you come and stay at the ranch while enjoying our valley. The property has direct and exclusive access to the Kern River where you can swim, tube, sunbathe and fish. You are welcome to pitch a tent by the river; however, we ask that you please notify us as the lawn irrigation is fully sprinkler operated. Just on the other side of the river you will find the California Living Museum (local zoo), Lake Ming, Kern River Golf Course, multiple riverfront picnic spots, Miracle Hot Springs up the mountain, hiking trails, nature walks. and more! Less than an hour up the road are wilderness camp sites and Lake Isabella. Continuing onward is the Sequoia National Forest where you can visit for the day knowing a comfortable & safe home will be welcoming your return. *No parties or events allowed (Please, no music or loud noises allowed outside of the home). This is a extremely quiet neighbrohood and noise travels fast & easily. Quiet hours are 10pm-8am. The property is equiped with noise monitoring devices and occupancy count devices, we will be notified if noise levels exceed a certain level. Additionally we will be notified if occupancy count exceeds the number of guests booked on site. *Smoking allowed outdoors only. *Shoes off inside the house. *Children MUST be supervised and monitored at all times. *No surprise guests, only those accounted for and registered can enter the property. *No firearms *Please do not put grease or solid food down the kitchen sink. Septik tank is sensitive *Please do no flush wipes, paper or feminine products down the toilet as the septik tank is sensitive. *This is a rural property and as such, there is wildlife which includes: rabbits, squirrels, rats, mice, coyotes, snakes, lizards, birds, bugs, and spiders, to name a few. *Please keep the doors closed to prevent the above wildlife from joining you in the home during your stay. *There are five secuirty cameras on the property for safety reasons. One at the main gate, one at the main home, one at the corner of the garage, one at the carport and one by the river. NONE in the house. *The canvas bell tent can also be booked for camping by the river, which could sleep 3-6 people, inquire within. *Pets are allowed on the property (fee's apply), however must be monitored at all times and not left alone. Pets must be kept close to owners at all times to avoid issues with wildlife, no pets on the furniture and beds. A fine will be applied if pets have been lounging on bedding and furniture.
