Great place for single or multi night camping. Close to several historical sites and national monuments. It’s primitive style with no access to potable water but there is a porta potty and bins for trash. Owner - Vicky - is highly communicative and responsive. She easily accommodated our large group - 35 people. Even with that many folks there was still plenty of room and didn’t feel like we were on top of each other. She has a very friendly dog who guards the place at night and will surely ask you for some head rubs. We’ll be back for sure.

I truly enjoyed this trip! I went in went an open mind and it was just as I had hoped for. I loved holding the beautiful animals and seeing the wonderful art Richard and his friends have created. Richard and his friends are such kind people and very talented! I felt so welcome and would highly recommend to those who enjoy a hippie life style with animals! The heat was rough at night but it cooled down around 11 pm and was great. Bring bug spray!!

5 nights at Verde River Vortex Adventure

We had the best time at Crystal Loft Cabin! Jason was an incredible host offering all the tips you could need on everything from places to eat, hike, kayak, bike, live music, etc. He even came to pick up my friend and I at the end of kayaking on the verde river! Crystal Loft is a perfect space 17 minutes outside of downtown Cottonwood, and 40 or so from Sedona with amazing star views, and all the amenities you could need. It was mid 80’s-low 90’s when there, but cooled off perfectly in the evenings, and Jason had an AC unit and fan that kept the cabin perfect temp. The bed on the upstairs loft was comfortable. Highly recommend this spot- so glad we found it. Thanks Jason!

Lots of open spaces for seclusion (didn’t see another person over the 2 nights I was there) and excellent stargazing. Very rocky terrain so recommend a cot or inflatable and keep your windows closed when riding in as very dusty road.

We stayed at Hawk’s Hideaway (Site #4) over Memorial Weekend. We expected it to be packed but were surprised by how quiet and peaceful it was. Campers came and went, but everyone was friendly and respectful. We seemed to be the only ones who stayed the full weekend. Although we never saw the host, self check-in and check-out went smoothly. We didn’t visit the nearby river, but walking the grounds was a highlight—lush, green, and nothing like typical Arizona. That said, lots of bugs—if bugs aren't your thing, keep that in mind. Every morning we were greeted by songbirds, and we were lucky enough to spot an owl and a great blue heron near camp. Truly a unique experience and one of the more scenic Hipcamps we’ve stayed at. The only downside: flies—especially in the mornings while trying to cook or eat. We were camped nearest to the porta potties, which started to smell and draw flies by Day 3. We assume this was the source of the issue. More frequent cleanings or relocating them would help a lot. Next time we’d choose a site further from the toilets, but we still recommend Hawk’s Hideaway for those looking for a semi-developed dispersed camping spot near Sedona or Clarkdale!

Easily accessible. Very clean and well kept. Short drive or hike to Old Town Cottonwood. Quiet. Easy walk to Verde River. Buddy, the camp dog came each morning to check on me aned my two female dogs. He was very proper, and just hung around for a quick hello and some pets. All in all I think very highly of Hawks Hideaway and look forward to visiting again.

Hawks Hideaway offers 8 campsites suitable for tents of all sizes, many of which can accommodate two or more tents (additional fees may apply). We also have a large, unfurnished teepee, and are working on a cozy, furnished country cottage. (ETA Sept 25). Large trailers and RVs are NOT allowed. Nearby activities include: bird watching, hiking, river rafting or tubing, kayaking, fishing, swimming, stargazing, and rockhounding. This area conforms to the Arizona Dark Sky initiative, and while we are not dark-sky certified, we've had several guests compliment us on our beautiful skys. When it comes to rockhounding, or amateur geology, this is a fantastic area for exploration and study. We gladly welcome pets, as long as you take care of all their needs, including cleaning up any mess and filling in any holes. Well mannered, friendly dogs may be unleashed from time to time. Please, PLEASE watch your small pets carefully. If you're traveling with cats, please keep them on a lead. There is a riding academy and boarding facility adjacent to our property, and a long pleasant trail allows horseback riders, hikers and cyclists to travel along the Verde Greenway into Old Town Cottonwood, a pleasant 30 minute walk through lush riparian area. Hawks Hideaway is a family owned property, occupied by a 3rd and 4th generation, mother-son team. Two generations have lived and died here before us and we are proud to be the custodians of this majestic property, full of old growth, gigantic cottonwood trees. A birdwatcher, or naturalists dream. Hawks Hideaway is a natural and secluded spot located directly adjacent to the state-maintained Verde River Greenway. This means you may encounter wildlife and pests associated with being in such close connection to nature. Hawks Hideaway is next to many miles of wilderness. You may see or encounter wildlife of all kinds, most are harmless, some are dangerous. It is your responsibility to know the difference. Be prepared to tuck your food away and bring ample protection from the insects. You are responsible for your own safety and are camping here at you own risk.
