The Davis Camp is a unique historical site that offers a glimpse into the past while providing modern amenities for visitors. Established in the early 1940s to support the construction of the Davis Dam, this campground is steeped in rich history and surrounded by stunning natural landscapes. The Davis Dam project was authorized on April 26, 1941, under the Reclamation Project Act of 1939, and was named in honor of Arthur Powell Davis, who served as the Director of Reclamation from 1914 to 1923. Construction contracts were awarded in June 1942, and facilities such as a mess hall and dormitories were built on the Arizona side, forming what is now known as Davis Camp. However, the project faced delays during World War II, leading to the termination of contracts and the removal of many buildings to support the war effort. After the war, work on the Davis Dam resumed on September 2, 1945, with Utah Construction taking over the main contract in April 1946. During this time, the Bureau of Reclamation developed Davis Camp to house workers, creating a community that included over 100 homes, a grocery store, gas station, post office, recreation center with a swimming pool, and churches.
