Set at 3,548 feet and surrounded by waterfalls, forest hikes, and sprawling views, the Big Meadows Campground of Shenandoah National Park provides a true immersion into the Blue Ridge Mountains. The campground is based in Big Meadows, a high-altitude meadow with spring flowers, fall foliage, and excellent wildlife watching and stargazing. It’s also right off of Skyline Drive and close to the Byrd Visitor Center and a park-operated restaurant and convenience store. Tent and RV sites at Big Meadows Campground come with fire pits, picnic tables, and access to restrooms, showers, and dump stations.

Tips for Snagging a Campsite Reservation

  • All of the campsites at Big Meadows Campground are reservable in advance online or by calling (877) 444-6777.
  • For any given day, 50% of the sites become reservable six months in advance, 25% become reservable two weeks in advance, and the remaining 25% become reservable four days in advance.
  • We recommend using this staggered reservation release system to score tickets as soon as you know your travel dates. Summers at this campground are especially popular, so don’t delay.
  • There are no designated walk-in sites, but rangers may be able to make same-day reservations if there are available sites.

    • When to Go

    Spring at Big Meadows Campground is a time for wildflowers and roaring waterfalls. Summer is the park’s busy season, with highs in the mid 80s and lows in the 60s. This campground also books out in autumn for the fall foliage color transformation. Both spring and fall campers should plan for potential rain showers and cold nights. Big Meadows Campground is closed in the winter, typically from Thanksgiving for early May. For specific info about the current open season, contact that park rangers at (540) 999-3500.

    Originally part of Blake Farm, built in the 1930's. Blake Farm was subdivided into 5 acres farmettes in the 1990's. The original farmhouse is next door, now known as Agape Farms. The forest has reclaimed much of the original Blake Farm land. Visit over 4 acres of available land, from the pastures, to the wooded creek, or the very back edge of the farm abutting deep woods. Spend relaxing time petting the Nigerian Dwarf goats, Rhode Island Red chickens, and the super-friendly livestock guard dogs (Thomasina, Bucky, and Sarge). We are also located adjacent to Agape Farms, with its horses, ducks, and chickens. All this in horse country just minutes from I-95 and an hour from Washington, DC or Richmond, VA.

    This was a 55-acre farm, split in half to accommodate a bypass through Charlottesville, so the previous owners had to give up half the land, and actually moved the house down to the other half of the property! They had to build a land bridge to get to the new home site, so they turned the bridge into a dam and created a beautiful large swimming pond, complete with beach and gazebo. My wife Stephanie and I bought the property in early 2017 and have turned it into a private horse farm, adding pastures, a riding ring, and 6-stall barn. There are ~21 horses who live on the property. The property is unique in that you can hardly see another house from anywhere on the property and yet we are only 2 miles from Barracks Rd. Shopping Center, and 4 miles from the University of Virginia.

    Welcome to our small Farm, nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Madison County, Virginia. Located just minutes from Shenandoah National Park, we offer intimate nature-inspired cottages and camping on our 120-acre working farm. Enjoy an evening under the stars with fireflies and a campfire after a long day hike, fly fishing on one of our beautiful trout steams or touring the local vineyards and breweries. We currently offer one cottage, glamping and a few campsites for our guests. Our campsites are all private, located acres apart with tables, chairs, firepits, some elevated sleeping areas, some hammock spots and a few with a roof. Three of our spots require walking away from your vehicle, short distances. We have four drive-in sites that will accommodate two or three vehicles. We do not allow RVs or trailers on our main farm due to our narrow mountain driveway. Wisteria Camp has a private driveway, it can accommodate small RV/Trailers. Camper vans are welcome at the main farm! Our farm store includes our Animal Welfare Approved products such as Eggs, Chicken, Beef, Pork, Lamb and Dairy, as well as produce, jams, coffee and other items from our local community. We offer camping essentials, local art, bike rentals, farm experiences and tours. The property has miles of trails along mountain spring-fed streams, a small pond and access to three private acres on the Robinson River, a stocked Trout stream, just 2 miles down the road. Our property is centrally located to White Oak Canyon (20 minutes) and Old Rag Mountain (10 minutes) trailheads in the Shenandoah National Park as well as many vineyards and breweries. A few offerings on the farm. Tasting in the 1850s Chestnut log cabin, tubing trips, breakfast and picnic lunches, Animal experiences and Yoga. Please inquire about renting the property for private small events. Winter Camping: Please note that we can received significant snowfall in our area. 4WD may be required during the winter months.

    98 acre working produce farm with lots of wild space and creek that flows the entire property. Close to Downtown Staunton and the Blue Ridge Parkway. The handmade timberframe cabin has lots of character and complete visual privacy. 12x16 space with twin mattress beds, kitchen area with propane cookstove, water filter, dry sink. Small woodstove and loft for sleeping. Sleeps (4). Outhouse available close by the cabin. Access is fairly easy but would be best in 4wd vehicle. In the case of inclement weather, cabin may not be accessible. Please, no dogs as we have lots of farm animals.

    We stayed at site 36 which is a walk-to site with an assigned parking space approximately 100 yards from the site. This site was nestled back in the woods and we saw lots of deer walk right by our site. The facilities were clean and included bathrooms, a room with a utility sink for washing dishes, and coin showers.

    Loved Big Meadows campsite 0A58. Showers are $5, washer is $1, dryer is 25 cents/5 min. There is a cash-to-quarter machine. The trails here and views were OUTSTANDING. I highly recommend Bearfence Mountain trail.
