Bear Tree Homestead is nestled among the cliffs and ravines which drains the south face of Hogback Mountain located in Marquette Township Michigan. Hogback Mountain is one of the larger rock formations in the Huron Range, a surprisingly rugged, and diverse region of low mountains carved by glaciers. Each cabin is hand-built of log and stone using traditional Scandinavian building tools and techniques. The cabins have access to the pond, use of the canoe, a private fire pit, picnic table, charcoal grill and privy. Inside the cabins is a functional kitchen with dishes, flatware, pots and pans, so you can prepare meals onsite. Cabins also have table and chairs as well soft chairs/sofa sitting area, bookshelves with a variety of books, board games and puzzles, and covered porch in case of rain. Our buildings, gardens, and pastures are integrated into the forested landscape and are not your typical homestead. Enjoy the peaceful surroundings, collect fresh eggs (when they are laying), lay in the hammock, listen to the sounds of nature and the barnyard or take an adventure hike, bike ride, snowshoe, or ski right out the door.  One of the most wonderful things we have to offer is the accessibility to thousands of protected acres surrounding us and the trails that bisect them. The property is on the North Country Trail, just over a Noquemanon Trail Network Forestville trailhead where access to year round recreation awaits. Hogback Mountain is just up the trail from the cabin with spectacular views of forest, mountains and lake superior. We are located 8 miles from downtown Marquette in Michigan's Upper Peninsula where there are many great restaurants, shops, and brewpubs. However, once you drive into Bear Tree Homestead and settle in you will not want to leave.

The Pond Cabin is the most private cabin we offer.  It is off-grid and sits on the far end of the pond. There is no electricity or running water.  Firewood to heat the cabin is provided in colder months.  Water is provided in a 7 gal jug. There is a 2 burner gas stove for cooking, dishes, flatware, pots, coffee making options, a private fire pit, picnic table & bbq grill.   A front porch overlooks the pond offers a great place to sit on a rainy day and enjoy a book.   Pond Cabin is just under 200 square feet, can sleep 4 people.  Queen size futon bed lower, a queen size foam mattress and one twin foam mattress found in the low ceiling loft.  This loft space is tight, a steep ladder with out hand rails for access.  Clean sheets, blankets, and pillows will be provided, but you may need to make up the beds.    This cabin has its own out house a short distance from the cabin. The cabin is easily accessible with its own driveway and parking for 2-3 vehicles.    It is a short walk to our cabin area.   A tent can be set up next to this cabin. We are located in the middle of a recreational area.  You can walk, ski, snowshoe, bike and hike right from the cabin to destinations like Hogback Mountain, Harlow Lake, Sugarloaf,  Noquemanon Trail network, North Country Trail and trails that lead you to lake Superior shores.  PLEASE READ CAREFULLY BEFORE MAKING A RESERVATION. This is a working homestead, and our cabins are rustic.   We have lots of sounds around our homestead, including occasional chainsaws, night time guard dogs, cows, ducks and chickens, as well as a roaster, you will likely hear some charming farm sounds.  Our dogs are friendly, but they bark, especially if they are protecting our farm from predators. We also have neighbors, and their dogs like to visit, so you may encounter their dogs as well.   The cabin may have spiders and even mice, but we do our best to take precautions before your arrival.  The Homestead is only 8 miles from downtown Marquette, but the last 2 miles are trail roads and can be difficult to travel in the winter and spring thaw. We recommend a 4 wheel or all-wheel drive during these times,  Refunds will not be considered for mismanaged expectations, and any concerns can always be addressed with your host directly.

The Orchard Cabin sits next to the orchard and garden under large hemlock trees. The Cabin is located on the edge of the homestead and in the main compound area of the property in view of the owner’s cabin. The covered front porch overlooks the yard and pasture where the highlander cows and chickens forage. There is a pond with a hammock, a sitting area, and a fire ring for your use through the fenced in orchard & garden. The Orchard cabin has two large lofts that are accessed by a ladder and bridge that connects them. The lofts are set up for sleeping with a queen size bed in one and 2 twin (single) beds in the other with an additional foam single mattress if needed.  There is an full size futon and a sofa in the downstairs living room area. There is plenty of floor space for air mattresses (provided by you). Sheets and blankets pillows are provided for the four beds, and futon in the cabin; however, daily maid service is not part of the package. This is a rustic cabin with electricity and a hand pump for water. There are no showers for this cabin ( private sauna rental onsite) or YMCA offers showers and towels for a small fee and is easy to find in Marquette.  The wood-fired masonry stove is the heat source for this cabin.  The wood is provided in a shed attached to the cabin.  There is an outdoors composting toilet steps away.  You will find the kitchen fun to prepare meals in with stove, oven, refrigerator, coffee maker, cookware, and dishes. There is plenty of room to sit and enjoy yourselves in the living-dining area of this cabin.  Parking for 2-3 vehicles next the cabin. Once you arrive, you are only 8 miles from Marquette, MI; however, the last 2 miles are on dirt logging roads. So in the spring and winter, an all-wheel or four-wheel drive vehicle is recommended. You will not want to leave once you are here.  Refunds will not be considered for mismanaged expectations, and any concerns can always be addressed with your host directly.

Gorgeous Outdoor Getaway!
The Pond Cabin
Me and my boyfriend had an incredible time staying at Jill & Nick’s homestead. We stayed at the Pond Cabin in February, and it was magical! The cabin stays very very warm with the wood fired stove. Jill & Nick go above and beyond with ensuring things in the cabin are stocked, well taken care of, and clean. They are also very communicative and helpful. The location of the cabin was perfect, and the sound of the birds singing and roosters crowing in the morning is something I am missing after our stay. Will be back for sure!

Beartree Homestead is a slice of heaven on earth. No better place to retreat in winter than Orchard Cabin :) The sauna & cold plunge setup exceeded every expectation. From the sauna’s master wood craftsmanship, to the availability of sauna accessories like towels and essential oils, to the pristine swimming hole carved in the frozen pond, we could not have asked for anything more. Nick & Jill are the very best hosts. Grateful to them both for sharing their homestead (sharing it again! return renters here) with us all!

My wife and I enjoyed snowshoeing and cross country skiing around the beautiful property and nearby park area. We loved the rustic setting with the beautiful highland cattle, chickens and friendly dogs we met on our walks. The sauna was anther highlight of our visit. We will absolutely be back again.

The hosts were very kind and communicated to make sure that I would make it in safely. The cabin was cozy with plenty of firewood for heat. Their little spot in the woods was beautiful and quiet with tons of trails and parks around. My dog and I had just the most wonderful mid-January, 3 night stay at Bear Tree!

Picture perfect winter getaway.
The Pond Cabin
While I’m sure the experience is different in the summer vs the winter, it was a perfect snow globe getaway for us. From the narrow plowed roads to the cozy fire warmed rustic cabin to the picture perfect pond and property, it was a great experience for us. We used it as basecamp and while it felt like you were in the middle of nowhere, the endless options within 15 minutes is a hard find and is perfect if you don’t want to travel far to enjoy your time. We spent the evenings hunkered down in the dimly lit cabin and enjoyed just sitting and staring at the pond, ducks and immediate surrounding area. A true winter wonderland for this stay and would love to return in the summer and experience what I would guess, a much different adventure next time. Thank you for having us.

Out time at the bear tree homestead was incredible. The cabin was well stocked with anything we could need, as well as books and board games for the quiet evenings. Jill and her family were absolutely wonderful and welcoming and they're dogs wondering the property were wonderful hosts. Highly recommend planning a stay here as I plan on a return trip in the future.

Booked a cabin at bear tree homestead about a month in advance in the winter, as a calm getaway. We couldn’t be more pleased with the friendly and relaxed atmosphere that Nick and Jill. Can’t wait for our next opportunity to make the trek out to their place and enjoy everything the site has to offer. Their communication was top notch and very helpful, especially with the record two feet of snow we got during our stay. One of the best amenities is the direct access from their property to the North Country Trail, and several other trails that can be hiked on.

The Orchard Cabin was like living in a fantastic dream - life slowed down and we had a chance to reconnect. The cabin is super clean, had comfortable beds, a warm masonry fireplace and electricity. Not difficult to find if you pay careful attention to directions. Kitchen was fully stocked with cooking equipment. Take advantage of the sauna!! We arrived during a blizzard (we have a 4x4) and Jill was a great communicator. The dogs were friendly and we were so glad to meet Jill and her husband. Also so grateful to be able to bring our pup.

Wonderfully beautiful cabin and property. A true homestead with cows, chickens, ducks, and a sauna. I will be recommending this place to as many people as possible. Can hike from cabin to Lake Superior on the North Country Trail! Phenomenal, very close to Marquette, but a feeling of great seclusion.

The Perfect Escape in Nature

This was our second stay at the Orchard House, and it was every bit as magical as the first! Jill continues to be the perfect host — warm, attentive, and full of thoughtful touches (including another batch of her amazing homemade cookies!). The house itself is absolutely enchanting, from its cozy, well-appointed rooms to the peaceful property that feels like a true escape from the world. We loved being so close to the Hogback trailhead — it makes for the perfect day hike before coming back to unwind in such a serene setting. We can’t wait to return and try out the new sauna on our next visit! If you’re considering a stay at the Orchard House, don’t hesitate — it’s the kind of place that fills your soul and leaves you with memories you’ll want to relive again and again.

The Pond Cabin
From the moment we arrived at the Pond Cabin, everything we experienced exceeded our expectations. The cabin itself was cute, cozy, and very clean. It had a lot more kitchen and camping supplies than we expected. Loved the layout. It comfortably slept three adults and two dogs. The woods surrounding it and the pond are very beautiful and serene. No road sounds or artificial light, just peaceful nature and the quaint farmhouse. We were welcomed by our gracious hosts and their dogs who made us feel very at home, were so friendly, and made great recommendations for hikes and experiences. The hike to Hogback mountain is a must. The view from the top and fall colors were just breathtaking and you can walk there right from the cabin! We spent most of a day hiking the NCT and were just blown away by the trails and views. None of us knew how great the traditional Finnish sauna and cold plunge (into the crystal clear spring fed pond?!?) would relax and rejuvenate us. Wow! Also worth mentioning it’s an easy, very pretty drive to Pictured Rocks. You can do it all. All I can say is we will definitely be back and would recommend it to anyone who’s looking for what must be the ultimate UP experience.

Pond Cabin - beautiful!
The Pond Cabin
Pond cabin is clean, comfortable on the inside, slept exceptionally well, in the warm and cozy loft, using wood stove that kept me warm all night using very little wood. For those who like disconnecting in primitive spaces where the sounds of birds and wind rustling through the trees, an occasional distant rooster's crow, then this is the place you'll not want to leave. So close to North Country trail and easy hike to Hogback Mtn summit with amazing views. Jill the hostess and her family were very friendly as were her 3 dogs. Only heard them bark for a short time in the distance 1st night, while they protected the homestead chickens from wildlife. Jill showed me the authentic Mongolian Yurt they just installed, located on the trail towards the North Country Trail and Hogback mtn. Beautiful! I thought it was easy to find using Jill's directions and my satellite map/location phone. I would definitely stay here again. Hiked Dead Man's River trail nearby many waterfalls, enjoyed Marquette MI Pasties Lawry's and Iron Town Pasty the best, Presque Isle Black Rocks at sunset, and Ore Dock & Black Rock Breweries. Even say an ore freighter being loaded at Marquette's active Ore Dock!

In love with this spot
The Pond Cabin
The cabin was perfect, the land was beautiful, beds are quite comfy, oil lamps and fire are ever so cozy and the cookies so tasty. Hogback mountain trail is very close by and well worth the venture if you can manage a bit of a scramble at lest once. One evening here was not sufficient, we definitely plan to return. Well worth checking out if taking a trip to the area or just looking to go somewhere beautiful and peaceful to retreat from the world for a while.

We have loved coming back to Orchard Cabin! This is my family's third trip in and second for a bike race. We love the cabins close proximity to forestville trail head mountain biking and Marquette. This is such a great way to experience Marquette and connect with nature. The host are super kind and great communicators, also a great baker!

The Pond Cabin
We adored the Pond Cabin and the entire grounds of the Bear Tree Homestead! We saw such amazing critters right outside of out cozy cabin door: ducks, turtles, little red squirrels, a cute toad who came right onto our front steps, a couple small snakes, and several zipping hummingbirds that visited the feeder on the porch throughout the day! We took the canoe out into the quaint pond every morning and hung out with the duck family that lives there. The kerosene lamps provided cozy light in the evenings to play cards, board games, and spend time together. We loved playing with Chauncey the dog, wandering around the breathtaking grounds, and hiking the nearby trails. We thoroughly enjoyed the hike along the smaller lake with lotus flowers east of the property and the trail to and views from Hogback were incredible. Jill and Nick were fantastic hosts and we cannot wait to come back again!

Cannot say enough about how great Jill and Nick’s place is. Our group of 7 had the best time here. The beautiful cabin, delicious meals cooked, making friends with the dogs, ducks and cows, bathing in the pond, enjoying the sauna, hiking the North Country Trail directly from the site, driving 20 minutes to downtown Marquette, hiking to swim. It’s a sanctuary. There’s so much to experience here. Cannot wait to return.

Just a perfect, beautiful place to unplug. The Pond Cabin was even better than the pictures! We faced the pond on the porch and relaxed, canoed, hiked around a bit. Private, quiet and I would stay again no question. Highly recommend!

We loved our stay at the Orchard Cabin! Jill takes the time to make things special for her guests- fresh wildflowers, homemade oatmeal cookies upon arrival and by answering any questions that we had quickly through the hippcamp chat feature. We enjoyed sitting on the porch watching the farm animals and the hummingbirds feasting at the feeder on the porch. We hiked to Hogback Mountain, had a sauna day (and dipped in the pond!), canoed, and used the BBQ for a wonderful evening at the cabin. We also visited nearby Marquette to see Presque Isle State Park and Sugarloaf Mountain and had dinner and drinks at Ore Dock Brewery! Highly recommend this beautiful place for all who enjoy a wilderness adventure!!
