The best camping in Port Burwell Provincial Park, ON guide

Overview

About

Port Burwell Provincial Park prides itself on being an exceptionally family-friendly destination. The park offers comfort stations and laundry facilities at all three campgrounds, a large sandy beach, a playground, an interpretive center, and a summertime children’s program. It’s also an excellent destination for nature lovers with activities like hiking, windsurfing on Lake Erie, and birding—Port Burwell is one of the best spots in the region for bird watching. Hawks, eagles, and vultures are spotted regularly, and the park’s bird checklist is at 232 species.

Notable campgrounds

  • Best for beach bums: The Alzora Campground is closest to the beach and day park facilities.
  • Best for families: The Leander Campground is closest to the playground and amphitheater.
  • Best for rest and relaxation: The Iroquois Campground offers the largest sites and is farthest from the noise of the beach.

Tips for snagging a campsite

  1. Reservations are accepted up to five months before your arrival date. Book well in advance for weekend reservations during July and August, when the park is busiest.
  2. Reservations must be made in the name of the person who will pick up the camping permit at the front gate.
  3. Should you arrive late, your reservation is guaranteed until 8am on the day following your planned arrival. To try snagging a last-minute camping site, try calling just after 8am in case there were some no-show campers whose reservations just opened up.

When to go

Port Burwell Provincial Park is open from the second week of May until the second week in October. This region is noted for being exceptionally warm, so you can expect temperate conditions even in the shoulder season (but you should still research overnight temperatures to ensure you have the right supplies on hand). Like most provincial parks, Port Burwell is busiest during holidays and summer weekends. From the beginning of July to the first weekend in September, the park offers a Discovery Drop-in program for kids. While the park is gated in winter, visitors can drop in to hike, ski, and snowshoe.

Know before you go

  • The Port Burwell beach is amazing! Campers enjoy 1.5 miles of sandy beach along the shores of Lake Erie.
  • Pets are welcome—take advantage of both a dog beach and a pet exercise area.
  • Port Burwell Provincial Park is part of a bird migration route and, as such, is hugely popular with birders in the fall months.
