It was 1984 when John found his ‘diamond in the rough’, 20 acres with an orchard on the outskirts of Brantford. O.K., so the house was nothing to write home about but perfect for building a construction yard…no neighbors except for the family across the road that used their property to build log homes. By 1987 the old house was gone, a new one was being built and a shop for working on heavy equipment had been located about 200 ft. from Dr. the back door. It wasn’t until 1996 that things changed very much. Yes, the property around the house had benefitted from a wide array of trees and shrubs that John saved from the construction/demolition jobs he had done and that still thrive today but no big projects (except for equipment purchases) were ongoing. A chance meeting with the neighbor across the road one day resulted in the following dinner conversation, ‘How was your day’ I chirped. ‘Not bad, so-and-so didn’t come in; the truck broke down and I took it for repair; I bought the property across the road, and oh, yeah I’ll need a ride after dinner to pick up the truck’ was John’s casual reply. ‘What was that’? I pressed. ‘Yes, I need a ride after dinner to pick up the truck’ he repeated with a bit more volume. Of course like anyone, I had questions, ‘Do you want peas or corn with dinner’? ‘What time do you want to go to get the truck’? ‘The property across the road’, 10 acres, still has the 4 storey barn with its twin tiled silos which was built in 1914 and the big white house with wrap around porch that once was home to a Doctor and his family. Built so the Doctor could see his patients in the front with the family living in the back was very common in the day. Things remained relatively peaceful until 2000 when after studying alpacas for more than 6 years I bought our first three. Back in 2000 alpacas and llamas were not frequently seen on farms and because they could been seen from the road they received A LOT of attention. People driving by would stop and ask about them, ask if they could take a picture or two and that was when I would hear over and over again ‘You have a beautiful place here, I wish I/we could stay’. Well, if you want to visit and stay in the city it’s doable, we call it a hotel. But visiting a farm and staying well, that isn’t so easy. Each year we would see more and more families coming to ‘The Farm’ as they would call it. Some came to see the alpacas and horses, some came for a stroll and to check out the horse drawn milk and bread delivery wagons, some to have family birthday parties, others to have engagement/wedding/Christmas card pictures…and so many asked if there was any way they could spend a day or two. In 2021 during a conversation with a friend I mentioned we were in the process of gutting the 1100 sq. ft. space downstairs and turning it into an Airbnb! Right away she said, ‘I don’t know why you don’t have a Hipcamp? You’ve got that great area by the new barn that Hipcampers would love’! After a little investigation I found out what a Hipcamp was and the rest is history.

Unique, Private & a Wonderful Host

I stayed at the Sunrise Spot and absolutely enjoyed it. It was private spot, with nothing but the sounds of the country and the farm to enjoy. Karen was an absolute sweetheart and made the stay even better. She’s so friendly, great communication on the app and welcoming at the site. It’s incredibly easy to get lost in conversation with her. I’d happily stay here again and definitely recommend the Sunrise Spot to anyone looking for a relaxing, country, campspot, getaway.

The Canada site
We had such a great time at The Farm. My friend and I just needed a quick trip out of the city, and this was exactly what we were looking for. The location is really nice. You're close to Brantford and Paris if you need anything, but it still feels far enough out that you actually get some peace and quiet. Best of both worlds. We originally booked the Canadian site but switched over to Sunrise. Nothing against the first spot, we just checked the weather and realized we didn't need the overhead cover since it wasn't going to rain. I'm really glad we moved, though. Sunrise is more set back from the other sites, and the two mounds on either side give it a nice enclosed, private feel. Plus you wake up to the sun coming up right in front of you, which is pretty great. Karen is the real standout here. She knows so much about the animals, she has all the local history, and she's genuinely funny. She really made our stay memorable. Do not skip the farm tour, it's worth doing. The camping itself was great, but Karen is worth the price of admission all on her own. We'd definitely come back!

Just needed a place to crash for the night. Wanted to see the animals in the morning but it was raining. The idea is great and would have loved to experience it. Very cheap also. Much cheaper than a motel

Karen is a great host, making her rounds in the evening, making sure all have wood, with invitations to participate in a farm tour in the morning to meet the animals. Nice community of campers that happens. Bring something to ward off the flies if the farm next door is fertilizing his fields. Karen is a great host and also keeps an immaculate porty potty!

I had such an amazing stay at Karen’s Hipcamp. The land is beautiful and it’s very secluded.. I felt so welcome by her and my tent neighbors. You might even get lucky enough to get a tour and learn about some history of the farm. I consider Karen a friend now. If you come to the area, this is the place to stay!

The site was easy to find with both clear instructions and signage. Karen just has a couple sites which I prefer as crowded camping doesn’t really feel much like camping. Toilet was clean, and the area was peaceful. Karen gave us a fun tour of the property in the morning which was lots of fun as well. Overall great stay, thanks!!

Nice private campsite, there's no shade at the sunrise site so its fine for early risers, bring a portable sun umbrella during the summer. Its a nice place though.

A Spectacular Farm Stay

We had a wonderful stay at this Hipcamp. The grounds are spacious and very clean, and the bathroom was spotless. The view is absolutely spectacular. We slept surrounded by a farm, a beautiful wheat field, and a soybean field. Our host was incredibly kind and welcoming. She gave us a fascinating tour of the farm and shared the history of the property with us. We also got to see the alpacas and her impressive collection of antique carriages. She was an excellent host and a wonderful storyteller. We would gladly come back without hesitation. Highly recommended!

I really enjoyed my stay at John and Karen's farm. They made me feel welcomed as usual and my site was great for waking up in the morning seeing the beautiful sunrise and watching the sunset then night before. I will definitely come back again and would recommend where I stayed to a lot of people.

We had an amazing stay at The Farm in Brant, Ontario on Saturday night! The hosts were incredibly welcoming and made us feel right at home from the moment we arrived. The property was spotless, well-maintained, and such a peaceful place to relax. The animals were absolutely incredible and made the experience even more special. You can tell they're well cared for, and it was such a joy spending time around them. We had a fantastic time and would highly recommend this Hipcamp to anyone looking for a unique, relaxing getaway. The lot was an awesome size and clean. Karen was a wonderful host and very accommodating to ensure our stay was enjoyable. We had a birthday while there and she surprised us with delicious birthday cupcakes. My husband and I had a very restful time.
