Located near Lake Tejas or Steinhagen Reservoir travel 2.9 acres into a wooded hunting ground and enjoy a weekend of natures beauty. When you’re done setting up camp, hike the forest trails enjoy some vollyball with your friends and picnic under the shade of the trees. Our sites does have water access, an outhouse with a flushing toilet. Access to a rec area with volley ball. We also rent tents upon request. We have a 10 person tent for $50 a large 4-5 person tent with screened in area for $30. We offer a move in the woods package as well. A projector/screen setup and you bring a movie or rent one from us for $1 per title.

Delightful, funky, funny-farm with camping spots on a pond. Horses, chickens, goats, turkeys and a wise old dog are all part of the adventure. We thoroughly enjoyed our stopover on Allyssa’s property.

Weekend Trip to Snow White Sanctuary

The natural wetlands of the Snow White Sanctuary were absolutely beautiful! We arrived late (well after dark) but the hosts came out and showed us where we could set up our tent. The dogs were so friendly and came out to greet us. We heard the horses too, but we only saw them in the morning. (Callie, the mare, wasn't too fond of being pet, but she didn't mind being admired from afar :) The only downside to this location is that there aren't really any hiking trails (only one that goes around their property, definitely less than a mile). There was a slight mishap as we were leaving (there are a lot of dogs, mostly rescued, at this location and their neighbors) and some of them got in a dogfight near the gate. But Alyssa came out and it was resolved. The animals are all very tolerant towards people, and I would recommend Snow White Sanctuary to anyone wanting to experience Louisiana's natural wetlands in a peaceful, animal-filled environment!

The host was extremely friendly. Loved all of the animals. We unfortunately were only passing through on our cross-country road trip showed up at night and then had to leave pretty early in the morning. But it was a really cool experience. All of the animals were friendly. While we were cooking dinner a sweet dog came up to us and then a horse walked past our tent site that was really cool. Shared bathroom which was really nice, and we didn't take showers, but you could take shower if you needed. The host has some cool projects going on the property. Which we kindly invited us to check out.

Weekend Trip to Snow White Sanctuary

This place was beautiful. There were so many different kinds of animals. The pond next to our site was perfect to take my sons out on their row boat. Alyssa was very kind and gracious. We had an excellent experience and definitely plan on going again.

Discover this unspoiled land in southeast Texas. Around 40 miles of hiking trails take you through beautiful ecosystems. The longest loop covers 18 miles, so you might set aside an entire day for that jaunt. Walk through bogs, gigantic cypress swamps, and even see carnivorous plants.

Bring a boat since there is lots of water. Canoes and kayaks put you up close to swamp and marsh plants. You might encounter wading birds, woodpeckers, and herons.

The calm waters let you close your eyes and listen to the sounds of birds in the distance. Be on the lookout for alligators, although they generally keep their distance from boats.

There are no designated or developed campsites in the park proper. Backcountry campers should practice the "leave no trace" rules for overnight stays. Campsites must be at least 200 feet from all roads and 100 feet from the water.

When to go

The ideal time to visit Big Thicket National Preserve is during the cooler months from October to April, when the weather is mild and the mosquitoes are less prevalent. Summer brings heat and humidity, making outdoor activities more challenging.

Correction on the description: Fires are allowed and you can gather firewood to make them. Pets are allowed as well. Many great places to hammock or set up a tent.

Correction on the description: Having no developed campgrounds does not mean you should take that as an infinite number of camping options. "Anywhere you drop your pack" isn't the best advice to give for a National Preserve. I suggest visiting NPS.gov and reading the camping regulations or visit the rangers at the visitor's center if you're dropping by. There ARE rules. I have canoed down Village Creek & camped in the Big Sandy Creek Unit. It's a great stretch of water w/some decent obstacles along the way. The sugar white sandbars are plentiful & are perfect for stopping for breaks & are acceptable camping spots. BUG SPRAY is a must. Campfires are allowed unless there is a burn ban. It's a great place to get away from everything!
