If you love campfires, birdwatching, freshwater creeks, fishing, and solitude, come and share the quietness of our 300 acre offgrid homestead and immerse yourself in the natural beauty of Tropical North Queensland surrounded by world heritage rainforest, hills, creeks, the Mulgrave River, and all the flora and fauna that abound here. Our shallow freshwater creeks are refreshing to explore and, for deep water swimming and kayaking, it's only a five minute drive to Babinda Crossing. Hikers can explore our headlands or venture further to dedicated hiking trails including scaling the 922 metre high Walsh's Pyramid that's only a ten minute drive away. Birdwatchers are spoiled for choice day and night, beautiful insects are in abundance, small native marsupials and reptiles are regularly seen, and the waterways are home to a variety of tropical fish as well as the occasional crocodile in the main river. We’re a great base location for exploring the area as we’re only 15 minutes to the town of Gordonvale and less than an hour to Cairns International Airport, the Great Barrier Reef and the Atherton Tablelands. Boaties can take the ten minute drive to Deeral Boat Ramp to launch their vessel and head down the Mulgrave River to Russel Heads and out to the Great Barrier Reef and islands.

Our 20-acre exotic fruit farm backs onto World heritage rainforest and provides a relaxing base for which to explore the wet tropics south of Cairns. We have a beautiful freshwater swimming hole down the road, and also the Mulgrave River is very close if you want to do some fishing. The camping area is large, grassy and reasonably level, with space closer to the tree line, and space more out in the open. There is a firepit provided, and plenty of firewood around the place for you to help yourself to. We also welcome four-legged family members! We have had recent sightings of cassowary on our property so keep an eye out, you might just see one!We prefer self-contained campers, who have their own amenities, but we do have a toilet and shower up at the main house (about 50 metres away) you are welcome to use if needed. This is an unused bathroom downstairs so you will still have privacy. Access into the property is not suitable for large motorhomes. Entry will be too small for vehicles approx 8.5 metres long and 3.5 metres high.We grow exotic fruit on the property including limes, pomelos, mangosteens and more. When it's in season, you're welcome to sample some! Gordonvale is the nearest town, with a quiet historic charm, just 15 minutes drive away, while Cairns is around 25 minutes.

If you require power, please visit our website for your booking. Check your inbox for your pre-arrival email, which will contain details for your self check-in. Keen for a budget-friendly alternative to traditional van parks? Welcome to Highleigh Farm – a relaxed, family and pet friendly campground tucked at the base of the stunning Walsh’s Pyramid. Once just a cane paddock, this beaut patch has been lovingly brought to life with over 700 native trees planted, it’s now a little bush oasis – full of native birds, bush tucker, and good vibes. Just a cruisy 20-minute drive from the Cairns CBD, Highleigh Farm is the perfect launch pad to explore the region. We’ve got roomy, grassed sites (yep, we keep ’em green year-round thanks to irrigation), friendly chooks and guinea fowl strutting about the gardens, and horses always keen for a scratch and a yarn. There’s a mini pump track for the ankle-biters, a big shady communal area with a BBQ shelter, firepit, and plenty of open space for kids to run wild and your furry mates to stretch their legs. The whole joint’s securely fenced and gated, so you can kick back with peace of mind. Our big-rig-friendly sites come with individual power and water outlets, but if you’re more the off-grid type, you can book an unpowered site too. Either way, there’s plenty of space to spread out and soak in the serenity. Heads up: We don’t have toilets or showers onsite, so you’ll need to be fully self-contained. But don’t stress – the nearest dump point is just around the corner at Greenpatch Campground.

The best camping in Frankland Group National Park, QLD guide

Overview

About

Embark on an adventure to Frankland Group National Park, a tropical haven off the coast of Queensland. Here, you can immerse yourself in activities like snorkelling amid vibrant coral reefs, fishing in crystal-clear waters, and walking through lush rainforests. With camping areas like High Island and Russell Island, you can wake up to the sound of gentle waves and the sight of unspoiled beaches.

Notable campgrounds

  • High Island camping area: A remote paradise offering tent camping amid a backdrop of dense rainforest and fringing reefs.
  • Russell Island camping area (Commonwealth Island): Enjoy secluded camping on a tropical island with pristine beaches and clear waters.

Tips for snagging a campsite

  • Book early to secure your spot, as the Frankland Group National Park's unique camping areas are in high demand.
  • Visit the Queensland Government's official website to check availability and make reservations.
  • Consider visiting during off-peak seasons for a better chance at snagging a reservation.
  • Explore nearby camping options to ensure you have a backup plan in case sites are fully booked.

When to go

The best time to visit Frankland Group National Park is during the dry season from May to October, when the weather is mild and conducive to outdoor activities. Avoid the wet season from November to April, as heavy rains and strong winds can hinder access and enjoyment of the park.

Know before you go

  • Check park alerts for any closures or warnings, such as crocodile sightings or marine stingers.
  • Be prepared for a remote experience; facilities are limited, so bring all necessary supplies.
  • Respect the wildlife and natural environment; take trash with you and avoid disturbing nesting birds.
  • Ensure you have a valid camping permit and be aware that campfires are not allowed in the park.
  • For safety, always stay on designated walking tracks and wear appropriate gear for snorkelling and fishing.
