Nestled along the Heart River, the dam creates the Heart Butte Reservoir, also known as Lake Tschida, which primarily serves irrigation and flood control needs. A passionate advocate for the Heart Butte Dam's construction, he witnessed its completion in 1949 before passing away in 1956. Covering more than 1,259,000 acres, the Dakota Prairie National Grassland is a haven for wildlife.
