The best camping near Yuraygir National Park guide

Overview

About

Stretching 65 kilometres along the NSW coast and encompassing no fewer than 48 beaches, Yuraygir National Park revolves around the water. Hike coastal trails along forested headlands, stop to fish along rocky coves, and spot migrating whales from sea cliff lookouts. Tidal lakes and estuaries provide ample opportunities for birdwatching and canoeing, after which you can hit the beach to swim, snorkel, or surf. Seasoned hikers can tackle the multi-day Yuraygir Coastal Walk, while surfers should head north to the Angourie Surfing Reserve. There’s a choice of coastal campgrounds at Yuraygir, too, each with its own beach.

Notable campgrounds

  • Best for ocean views: Boorkoom campground has 11 clifftop pitches for tents, caravans, or camper trailers with spectacular views along Wilsons Headland. Toilets, picnic benches, and barbecues are the only amenities.
  • Best for beachside camping: Pebbly Beach campground has plenty of space for tents and caravans, and direct access to the beach.
  • Best for budget campers: Rocky Point campground has space for just two tents and no facilities—ideal for self-sufficient campers or hikers following the Yuraygir coastal walk.

Tips for snagging a campsite

  1. Advance bookings are essential, and you will need to pay the full amount before arrival.
  2. Some campgrounds have limited places, and they can book up quickly at peak periods. Book at least three months in advance for summer visits and bank holiday weekends.
  3. Check access to campgrounds before booking—access is limited for motorhomes and RVs, and some campsites are accessible only by high-clearance 4WDs.

When to go

Summer (December through February) is peak season in Yuraygir National Park and the ideal time to swim, fish, and surf at the park’s beaches. Coastal hikes are rendered even more picturesque in spring, when wildflowers bloom throughout the heathlands, and it’s often still warm enough to swim. Winter (June through August) temperatures often reach 20°C during the daytime, and this is also the time to spot humpback whales on their annual migration.

Know before you go

  • Yuraygir National Park is set along the Pacific Highway, 100 kilometres north of Coffs Harbour (about a 75-minute drive) and 48 kilometres east of Grafton (about a 45-minute drive). There are four main access points—via Angourie Road for the north section, via Brooms Head Road or Wooli Road for the central section, and via Barcoongere Way for the south section. You’ll need your own transport.
  • There is an admission fee to visit the national park (per vehicle), and this is in addition to any campsite fees.
  • Campsite and rest area facilities vary but you will need to bring all fuel, supplies, and drinking water with you. None of the campsites have power and generators are not permitted.
  • Mobile phone coverage is patchy throughout the park, but there is a public phone at Sandon River campground.
  • Fire bans are common throughout New South Wales during dry periods. Check local regulations before lighting your campfire and always use the fire rings provided.
