Murphy's Gold Creek Ranch

14 sites ¡ RVs, Tents25 acres ¡ Cranbrook, BC
I sold a business in Toronto and moved West in 1990 and drove all over North America looking for a new place to settle and raise a family. While camping in the Kootenay's I found this oasis and bought it. I have raised a family living totally off the grid since and love it. The water here is so clean and and the air is so fresh is why I stay. The night sky is so hard to explain it has to be seen to believe. Come check it out and you will agree. Babsy's Absolutely Magical Retreat

1 site ¡ Lodging1 acre ¡ Ainsworth Hot Springs, BC
I bought this magical property 13 years ago and I have developed it from beach to mountain with the idea of sharing it with epic humans since day 1. It is 1 acre of pure natural and artistic bliss. The natural wonders include a massive beach with space for many, a gigantic sling shot, sweet fire pits, comfortable lawn chairs, paddle boards, kayaks, a cedar strip canoe, and many other toys for you to explore. I also have a small fishing boat and 16ft catamaran that I can take guests out on for a small fee. There are 2 locations that can be rented separately or booked together, however there are also a couple of sites to pitch a tent on. Its like jurassic park here, very tropical and chill. The artful camper boasts of an outdoor spa and deck, BBQ, mini fridge, fantastic lake and mountain views and access and the beach from 10-8pm. The other rental a.k.a. The beach-house comes with an attached outdoor 1950's style kitchen, oudoor on demand shower, outhouse, firepits, lawnchairs, and free use of water vessels. Very, very cool. It is located steps from the water. Truly magical.

Camping near Kimberley guide

Overview

This four-season mountain destination offers something for every outdoor enthusiast no matter what time of year. In winter and spring, it’s all about the powder-covered slopes and expansive snowy backcountry—sandwiched between East Kootenay’s Purcell Mountains and BC's Rocky Mountain Range, the skiing is world-class. The main pedestrian streets of the downtown core have a flavour of a European alpine village and are often bustling with arts festivals and community celebrations. As the months warm up, the Kootenay and St. Mary rivers reveal plenty of salmon and trout waiting to be caught, and white-capped rapids waiting to be rafted.

When to go

While in the continental climate zone, Kimberley is protected from strong arctic fronts by the surrounding mountain ranges. They shelter the town from extreme cold but also create a rain shadow, which ups yearly precipitation—that means that even in the dry months (July and August), there will be rainy days. In December and January, the temperature dips down to -12°C, so if you want milder temperatures for camping, aim for the June-September window.

Know before you go

  • If flying in from out of province, entering the Kootenays from Calgary is the most straightforward route. Take the TransCanada west to Golden, Highway 95 south to Skookumchuck, and finally Highway 95A south. It's about a 4.5-hour drive from Calgary, but over 10 hours from Vancouver.
  • The nearest airport, Canadian Rockies International Airport (YXC), is 16km away in Cranbrook, and has flights to Kelowna, Vancouver, and Calgary.
  • Kimberley is a bustling resort town, so you should be able to get all your basic supplies here. It is remote though, so if you need specialist gear, bring it with you.
