As we are located in the secluded and sleepy cane fields of South Ballina there is limited access to shops, cafes, restaurants, etc.
The Burns Point Ferry is the best way to get to us, it runs from 5:30am until 12.30am daily, consistently running back and forth. An approx. 8min journey each way and costs $.00 each way, payable by credit card only. So you can easily go into Ballina town for all shops, cafes, restaurants, etc.
If the ferry isn't for you, you can drive to Ballina via Wardell on River Drive.
The bungalow is located approx. 25m from the main residence, and the campsite is located approx. 300m from the main residence tucked away in the paddocks and forest. We are onsite and available if needed.
Sugar Beach Ranch is an operating farm with staff onsite caring for animals and maintaining the grounds. All care is taken to ensure minimal disruption to guests.

GETTING TO THE ISLAND
You will be picked up by small powerboat from the riverbank opposite the island (Visitor Point) but our powerboat does not operate on Saturdays. There is parking for your car at Visitor Point.

Once on the island you will be given a tour and shown to our accommodation.
A row boat and double canoe is provided so you can go to your car as you please, a rowing distance of about 600m. We can not allow guests to operate our powerboat themselves.
There is a jetty and a boat ramp on the island if you wish to bring your own boat. If you bring your own boat please only use it to come and go from the island's boat ramp on the far western side of the island.

Additionally, if you have booked the hut for 6 and under guests, however you would still like some privacy, an option in extras is to book the Donga also for $80 per night.

The space
Twenty minutes from the highway- the 60-acre farm is a quiet oasis in a rural community. Fairlight was purpose-built for guests who have described it as comfy, relaxing, well-stocked, private, and different. The timber interiors and antique pieces add a touch of charm. One guest sai,d "it was like stepping back to a more relaxed time". Another saw the main bedroom and sighed "How romantic!"
A booking is for 2 guests and the cottage can accommodate 2 extra people.
Guest access
You have the whole cottage to yourselves.
You are welcome to wander the garden or walk down to the river.
Guests have access to the outdoor Forster room. ( A Room with a View !)
Guests staying for a while may like to bird watch or count the various native animals that visit the garden. Both depend on the season of the year.
Other things to note
Fairlight is in the country, 20 minutes from town so the Continental breakfast is extensive since there is no coffee shop to stroll to.
You choose your breakfast brands so no food is wasted.
Dietary needs like non-dairy or gluten-free can be catered for.
Most guests use the kitchen for their evening meal or drive into town.
In winter, there are room heaters and electric blankets. In summer, there are pedestal fans but no air conditioning.

Beth is the most welcoming host, she gave super clear instructions to make sure we could get to the property ok.
The property wow! It’s very private, overlooking the river and is just gorgeous. The bath was such a brilliant touch!
BBQ, shower, toilet, hot bath, fans, blankets, a fridge, kettle - whatever you need for your stay it is there!
I really cannot recommend enough, beautiful views!

Fantastic stay! Elizabeth’s place is amazing. The outdoor bath was the highlight and everything else surpassed our expectations. The bed was exceptionally comfortable and all the unique touches to the bedroom made it really homely. Elizabeth went above and beyond with some extras and was very welcoming when we met her (on horseback!) to guide us in. Thank you - we’ll be back!

The glamping pod was so lovely, well-equipped, clean and cosy. It is quite a distance from the main house on the property and therefore very private.
Great shower and the composting toilet was clean and odour-free.
Gorgeous views over the river.
Everything was as described and suited our needs perfectly.

Weekend Trip to Barachi by the Creek
We stayed at Barrachi Camp with a mate and honestly had the best time. It was the perfect little escape from Byron — so peaceful, private, and beautifully tucked away on the farm. Peter and Tania have created something really special there, a cosy cabin that feels completely nestled in nature while still being super comfortable. We loved the quiet, the privacy, and just slowing down for a couple of days. We’ll definitely be back, and next time we’ll bring more friends to share this gem. Highly recommend if you’re after a proper reset.

3 nights at Petaurus Gardens
We had the best time here! The property is so well set up with everything you would need, and the facilities were so tidy and clean (Also, what a luxury to sleep in a proper bed while 'camping'!) The property and location is absolutely beautiful, with a short walk down to the creek for a swim (or kayak if you so desire) We were lucky enough to be there with no other campers so had the property and creek to ourselves - such a treat for the Christmas period when places are normally packed out!!
Also, a big shoutout to Chris who is an absolute legend! We were there for a 40° heatwave, and then a massive thunder storm - Chris went above and beyond to make sure we were safe and comfortable through it all. I'm sure we will be back to check out the camp kitchen once its complete. Do yourself a favour and book in here, you will not be disappointed!

My family and I spent 3 nights at the hut. What an amazing place. A fun little drive to reach the hut definitely would need a 4wd if you’re thinking of booking. 10/10 for me I loved it. Caught myself 3 Australian bass off the double kayak provided at the river. My kids had a blast adventuring fishing and swimming. Star gazing was a 10/10 also. Jessica was lovely and had great communication with me her hut is one you shouldn’t miss. Thanks again Jessica

Weekend Trip to Petaurus Gardens
Me and my partner had been camping for two weeks and decided to treat ourselves to a night where we didn’t have to put up our tent. We are so glad we chose to come here for our night off. It was bliss! Chris is super friendly and really welcoming. The yurts are well maintained and well furnished. Shower and toilets were very clean and spider free which I was very grateful for.

This little tin shack is like going back in time to stay in a timber-getter's lodge. It is full of rustic charm and nestled at the foot of hills, beside and (importantly) in the shade of a stand of large beautiful camphor laurels, with a small creek running below. It really is camping without the tent, but has everything you need in the way of a solar shower, long-drop loo, tanks of water, solar lights and a small fan, gas cooker and large bbq, outdoor firepit, and even a fire-heated outdoor bath to enjoy under the stars, or in our case, a full moon. The deck is large and comfortable with chairs and a hammock which we spent a lot of time in, and the solar nights that come on at night make for a lovely vibe. The wind in the trees and the sound of the wind chime was so lovely to hear and fall asleep to at night, and the cool night's in the comfortable beds made for great sleeps.
Being a tin shack, it does get quite hot especially late morning/midday, but we found shade under the camphor's and loved watching the cows come up close. The creek was really low when we were there as there hasn't been much rain, but it would be so beautiful when flowing in rainy months.
Whian Whian Falls is less than 10 minutes away for a lovely swim to cool of, and we dined at the Channon Pub too which is recommended.
The kids (3 and 1) loved the space to explore, cows to watch, creek and bath to splash in, and fireside hangs.
Peter was such an amazing, responsive, friendly, and kind host.

My husband and I along with our 2 dogs had the most peaceful, relaxing stay on Peter and Tania's property.
Relaxing on the deck and watching the cows graize in the lush, rolling hills was so serene.
Cooling off in the nearby creek, watching our dogs play was so special.

Barachi by the creek is an absolutely magical place. Peaceful, secluded and surrounded by natural beauty while giving you everything you need for a trip away without all the mod cons. Pete and Tania are speedy and effective in communication and are awesome hosts. Cannot recommend this enough. You will not regret your decision to book. Bit of a walk down and back up but that was part of the charm. Earn your holiday!

We had such a great stay at Petaurus Garden! Chris was an awesome host — he upgraded us to a larger tent since it was just me and my husband, and made sure we had everything we needed, including extra torches, lighters, and other essentials. He even offered us a bike ride, which was such a nice touch. We also went kayaking and explored the walking trails around the property- such a peaceful and beautiful spot. There was hot water available for tea and coffee too, which made the mornings even better. Highly recommend this place for a relaxing nature getaway! We will definitely be back 💛

We had the most incredible night at Peter and Tania's cabin! The cabin was so decked out with everything we needed and the beds were comfier than the ones at home! The dog and the kids loved the creek, we hiked and explored the paddocks :) A big storm rolled in and we all watched the lighting from the porch and all slept so cozy with rain on the tin roof! Solar shower was perfect to give everyone a wash! Beautiful property and very private, we will most certainly come back again! Peter was so easy to communicate with and made sure we were all set.
