Harper Farms is a fourth generation, family owned cattle property out of the small township of Cangai; just 50 minutes west of Grafton. Located along the Mann River, just one kilometre off the Gwydir Highway, campers will find easy access to our riverfront site. The property is bordered by the Dandahra Creek and the Mann River, and boasts a variety of native bird and wildlife; peacocks, platypus, ducks and the occasional pelican to name a few. The Mann River is open to fishing November - July; and is a local favourite as a kayaking, canoeing, paddle boarding and swimming destination. Beef cattle and stock horses have been run continuously on the property since the early 1900s, and our friendly horses and cows will often pay a visit to the campsite. Along with our working dogs, we also run a small breeding kennel of Golden Retrievers and Border Collies. Dogs are always welcome on the farm, and we simply ask that camp visitors keep them under their control during their stay. A small shop with basic amenities (groceries, camp supplies, fishing bait, fuel) is located at Jackadgery; a 15 minutes drive east on the Gwydir Highway. To the west of Harper Farms lies the Gibraltar Range which hosts Washpool National Park with walking trails, waterfalls, rainforest and swimming areas. Away from the city lights, the Cangai area offers exceptional stargazing and is popular with keen astronomers and photographers. The creeks have waterfalls, swimming holes, pure and clean, though are a rugged unmarked hike. The sites are site only. You’ll need to take care of your waste, water, rubbish and power. Generator is ok, we’re out of earshot, so is everyone else. Each site has a picnic table and a fire pit and an abundance of ‘cut your own’ firewood upon the ground. Remember, fires this time of year are for ‘cooking only’, so be sure to bring those marshmallows… Pet Friendly, 4WD friendly with a bunch of serious challenges too… Horse friendly too, yep, there’s a yard to keep them too, up by the house. Accessible by 2WD with sites with enough space for any size caravan or motor home. While exploring, if you find a spot you’d rather camp, simply ask. We live on the property so help is nearby for any issues and the access road is shared. Peace, quiet and nature abounds.

Conveniently located in beautiful Bonville, it’s an easy stop off the highway for an overnighter to break up your trip, or a few days’ stay to explore everything the area has to offer! The site itself is next to a dam with water dragons, echidnas, and we’ve even spotted a koala in the tree there. Please be mindful of the dam’s close proximity for safety with little ones. There is an easy driveway to the site, and it’s not far off the road at all. We are directly across the road from Bonville International Golf Course. Sawtell village is about a 6-minute drive, brimming with cafes, restaurants, and a quaint cinema. Bohemian Bellingen is a beautiful 20-minute drive, with three different routes from here — one even includes a dirt road through the state forest. North Beach Cafe at Mylestom and Urunga Boardwalk are about 15 minutes away, and Valla Beach is 20 minutes — all wonderful options to explore! Please note: While this is a quiet area, the road can get some early morning traffic noise due to a development further up the road. It’s nothing like camping in a caravan park right next to the road, but perfect serenity should not be expected. We also expect quiet guests for our friendly neighbours. You have the site to yourself, so you can enjoy peace and quiet as well. We love animals, but we ask that no pets be brought along, as we have free-range chooks nearby and our own dogs on the property.

It is a registered conservation property bordering Nymboida River and Nymboi-Binderay National Park. Alastair and I have shared the property for more than 25 years and consider ourselves custodians of this precious place. Visitors enjoy: the pristine river; walking tracks through diverse terrain; starry night skies and campfires. Previous guests recommend staying at least two nights to soak up the atmosphere and explore the area. Choose from the 'Ant Shack' or four adjacent campsites with easy access and views to the Nymboida River. Shared facilities include a hot shower and composting toilets. You can walk, swim and kayak, explore the area or just relax for days. We can’t accommodate domestic animals or allow fishing, not even catch and release, because we protect our wildlife and the endangered Eastern Cod. Black Mountain is remote but just 60 kilometres from Grafton or Coffs (via back way). 2WD access to our house is from Nymboida only. 4WD/AWD from Lowanna or Glenreagh and 4WD/AWD down to the river/campsite area - Not suitable for caravans. All proceeds from Airbnb and Hipcamp are invested in the continuing conservation of Black Mountain.

Kentucky is a 400 acre property that was once a dairy, and is now devoted to raising horses and beef cattle. there is around three km of creek frontage and the land ranges from lush creek flats to rugged sandstone ridges. there are several dams and a billabong which are frequented by birds, including Jabiru storks. Wedgetail Eagles hunt overhead. Pretty faced wallabies are endemic and Koalas may sometimes be seen. Our property backs on to the Hogarth Range, where there are numerous orchards. We hope to convert the old dairy bails to a camp kitchen soon, but currently it can be used as shelter if required. Visitors need to be self contained at this stage. Pets are welcome if kept under control.

King Country is 5 vacant acres at the top of a hill. Lower down on the block, you’ll find an unfenced dam. There’s a neighbor on one side, with bushland on the other. King Country can be your basecamp to explore thousands of acres of state forest and national parks — perfect for motorbike enthusiasts. The sites are mostly flat with very easy access. Each site includes a fire pit, and timber is provided. The beautiful beaches and rivers of Wooli and Minnie Water are approximately 30 minutes away. Grafton is about 20 minutes, and Yamba is around 45 minutes. In the nearby town of Tucabia, you’ll find a general store, bottle shop, and petrol station. Our accommodation would perfectly suit a few couples, 2 families or a group of up to 10 people. Your booking will include both The Cottage and The Shed. 'The Cottage' is open plan with loft style accommodation with 2 x queen beds, 2 x KS and 2 x floor mattresses. It has a lounge room area with TV, small kitchenette and bathroom. A beautiful spot with lovely hosts. We booked last minute and took our camper trailer with our dog and 3 year old and everyone loved it. We ended up moving to the western finger because it was a bit more spacious and secluded. We enjoyed a few walks, wildlife, relaxing and the curious and very friendly horses that paid us a visit in the morning. We had an amazing time and will hopefully be back soon. 100% recommend it to anyone looking to get back to nature!

Wow, words can not do justice the amazing time we had at the Ranch! The river views, the hospitality, the tranquility & the fire baths were just magical. Shanti has truly created a slice of heaven out there. For the icing on the cake, make sure to book the horse trek + swim.. i’ve done many treks in my life and this was the best. Plenty of trotting and cantering through stunning scenery, finished by a swim with the horses. Shanti’s way with horses is so special to witness, you can tell they love her as much as she loves them. We will be back, with friends in tow.

Great spot by the river, we took our dogs on a kayak down the river and they loved it 😁Cleanest composting toilet I've ever seen! Arne gave us plenty of time to settle in after our arrival time before coming down for a quick check-in and home-grown spinach delivery. The spot is close to Battery falls, and nested in beautiful forest which he gave us a brief history of. It felt secluded enough, but we had a good chat with some locals by the river who'd spotted a platypus not 20m from the road crossing! The fireflies surrounding the camp were pretty magical too. Would recommend 🌞

We absolutely loved our 3 nights at Camp Cangai! Directions were spot on & very easy access for our 20’ van. We camped right on the river & the water was perfect for swimming every day. The site has plenty of room for groups (Mick said there was a group of 25 following us) but we had the place to ourselves. A nice, clean drop toilet is provided & has fantastic views! We also ordered firewood from Mick & he provided heaps! We took a drive over the bridge one day & ended up doing a big loop back to camp - really nice scenery. If you’re in the mood, it’s only 18kms to the Mann River cafe for a burger for lunch. They also sell fuel, alcohol, food & drinks. All in all, a spectacular way to spend time chilling out & totally relaxing. We sure did!

Beaut campsite overlooking the Nymboida 😊 We went walking along the well marked tracks early morning for a couple hours which were delightful with the quirky additions along the way. In the afternoon paddled out in the Nymboida river and had a dip. Camp fire in the evening and lots of fireflys around amazing. Great couple days n lucky good weather. Steep hill down but little Subaru handled it well 👍.

Where to go

Clarence Valley

Rocky gorges and pockets of rainforest line the banks of the Clarence River, which curls its way from the Dividing Range through Grafton to the North Coast. Head west to canoe through the rapids at the Clarence Gorge, hire a houseboat, or pitch your tent at riverside camping grounds. To the east, the lagoons, islands, and beaches around Yamba and Iluka provide ample opportunities for fishing and water sports, as well as surfing along the coast.

NSW North Coast

Less than an hour’s drive east of Grafton, the North Coast is home to golden beaches, lush rainforest, and coastal estuaries. Hike along the coast and camp by the beachside in Yuraygir National Park, then hop between beaches such as Woolgoolga, Red Rock, and Sapphire Beach. To the south, Coffs Harbour has surf breaks, seafood restaurants, and the popular Big Banana Fun Park.

New England Tablelands

West of Grafton, wild rivers tumble through gorges, and swaths of World Heritage-listed rainforest blanket the tablelands. There are six national parks to choose from where you camp in the bush, hike through the jungle, or venture off-road along rugged 4WD trails. Highlights include white water rafting in Nymboida National Park, rainforest walks in Washpool National Park, and canoeing through Guy Fawkes River National Park.

When to go

Grafton blushes with purple flowers in spring (September through November) when the city’s iconic jacaranda trees bloom. Time your visit for the biggest event of the year—the week-long jacaranda Festival at the end of October—when thousands of visitors flock to the town. Grafton has four distinct seasons, but it rarely gets too hot or cold for camping and outdoor activities.

Know before you go

Grafton has bus links to the surrounding towns, but you’ll need your own vehicle to explore the tablelands and national parks.

Grafton has a selection of shops where you can pick up camping gear and stock up on supplies.
Fire bans are common during summer and dry periods, so check local recommendations before lighting a campfire and always use the designated fire pits.
A permit is required to camp within NSW’s national parks, and campsites must be booked in advance.
