There are a few great campsites to choose from- all 2WD accessible. 1 at the top of the property (good for families/large groups up to approx 20) with good flat ground and surrounded by a lush forest. It's close to the quiet country road so it is easy access in and out, another 2 at the back with water views and 1 in the forest (Only if you have 4wd and portable loo we can give you an exclusive spot in the bottom of the golden gorge). Sit back and relax around the campfire whilst toasting a marshmallow or some damper.
This campsite offers a unique heptagonal toilet (no shower yet but its on the way). Please ensure you're fully self sufficient with all other supplies (including water).
From here you can explore the amazing Blue Mountain views, marvel at a magical glow worm dell, check out the 2 apple cider breweries or gin distillery and taste some of the region's delicious produce.
Colo River is 30 mins away, a clear waterhole is 10 min drive (4wd only- hosts can transport if available), the mouth of a hiking trail to the National Park is on the property, the main township of Bilpin is close by with the baker, fruit and veggie picking, Mountain Bells Cafe (host recommendation), apple pies galore and Melange restaurant , the markets are on Saturday morning 10-12 noon at the local hall and there is a free meditation group 9am Sunday at the monastery.
With so much to do you will need more than one night or plan a return visit to the amazing Mountain Lagoon Hideaway at Bilpin!

The tiny house is surrounded by beautiful native trees and plants and the grassed area in front of the deck features a gorgeous fire pit with seating. A historic little rustic outhouse houses extra firewood.
Some board games, playing cards and books are provided as well as outdoor games like Finska, croquet, grip ball, boule and ring toss.
Access to the properties back paddock is through a gate and there you will be surrounded by beautiful vistas and a creek at the bottom. There is an abundance of birds and wildlife for you to enjoy and view. Regular visitors include wallabies, bush turkeys, turtles, cockatoos, ducks and many other birds. There is a 'home made' grass tennis court and rackets and a few balls are provided but feel free to bring your own. For the adventurous, the creek has a log bridge which accesses the far side featuring a wild and luscious rainforest area.

For thousands of years, Aboriginal communities have gathered on this mountain. The area offers rock carvings, walking tracks, and campsites to explore.
The name Kawalang was gifted to us by Aniwan Gamilaroi Wonnarua Elder Uncle Bill Smith. It means “abundance” in language, acknowledging the spirit of the land and the food and joy it brings.

Inside you will have a full bathroom with shower, vanity and toilet and instant hot water and modern plumbing. All water is collected from rainwater into a water tank and then filtered for safe drinking. Reverse cycle air conditioning will keep you warm and cosy in Winter and cool in Summer.
The bedroom loft is accessed by a pulley controlled ladder and boasts a comfortable Queen Koala bed mattress adjacent to a huge picture window looking over the property. Blockout blinds are also provided.
Downstairs is the kitchen with electric stove hob, microwave oven, sink, fridge,toaster and kettle. A breakfast bar with stools acts as a desk and eatery and is positioned in front of a huge swing out window that overlooks the outdoor spa, deck and the view to the back paddock which is superb (binoculars provided)!
A lounge is situated inside the French entrance doors and this position allows a fantastic view out to the paddocks and the deck and is a great please to read and relax.
The deck itself is huge and features an outdoor spa bath as well as alfresco seating with a table and sweeping stairs leading down to the grass area and firepit/bbq. Luxurious bath robes and towels are also provided.
The tiny house is surrounded by beautiful native trees and plants and the grassed area in front of the deck features a gorgeous fire pit with seating. A historic little rustic outhouse houses extra firewood.
Some board games, playing cards and books are provided as well as outdoor games like Finska, croquet, grip ball, boule and ring toss.
Access to the properties back paddock is through a gate and there you will be surrounded by beautiful vistas and a creek at the bottom. There is an abundance of birds and wildlife for you to enjoy and view. Regular visitors include wallabies, bush turkeys, turtles, cockatoos, ducks and many other birds. There is a 'home made' grass tennis court and rackets and a few balls are provided but feel free to bring your own. For the adventurous, the creek has a log bridge which accesses the far side featuring a wild and luscious rainforest area.

Weekend Trip to Halifax Hill
Lovely shack creatively situated on a rocky outcrop beside the McDonald river.
It has all the charm of a yesteryear hideaway. It’s an experience not a polished hotel, think secret mountain recluse, take your book, your art stuff and a bottle of wine.
we loved the bush views and sounds, the location and the quirk!
Swimming in the river near by, zipping into town for a coffee or beer and enjoying the cute town of St Albans. Loved it so much we can’t wait to come back!

Weekend Trip to Mountain Lagoon Hideaway
Absolutely loved it. This was our first time glamping, the private spot in the forest was the perfect get away for us. Everything looked clean and organised. There were two chairs and table to sit outside and we used it for having a BBQ using a portable stove while enjoying a cold drink for dinner. Inside the glamping tent the bed was so comfortable, perfect temperature inside, there were two bean bags to lay on, cabinets and books to read with three light lamps. The host prepared us with two chocolate cookies sooo good. We stayed for 1 night and we had a great sleep, so quiet, nice and cool inside, not hot at night. Toilet is very close to walk to, water to wash hands provided, there is also portable water bag to take cold shower if needed. Camping for other people are not too far away, which is on the way to the walking track for a little nice hike. The only thing I would recommend for the host to have an outdoor table umbrella or a cover in case it rains, but we brought our own beach umbrella to use it as table cover as it was drizzling a little bit of rain, I would recommend to bring a gazebo, apart from that It was a great experience, could have stayed for two nights, it felt like living hundreds of years ago - nomadic life. Loved our stay at Coral tree cottage. We would normally camp but my daughter wanted something a little different for her bday so we got the cottage. It was the best of both worlds. Still felt like we were camping surrounded by bushland with the extra comforts. The cottage was exactly what we were looking for, a cozy rustic cabin surrounded by chickens walking around and kangaroos. And loved having the farm dog Titan coming to visit us. We absolutely loved our stay at The Mountain Shack & having the whole place to ourselves in the middle of nature. It’s such a unique property — full of charm, quirks, and thoughtful touches. We spent the evening playing board games and drinking wine by candlelight, which made it feel like we’d stepped back in time (a little spooky, but in the best possible way!).
There’s plenty of space to explore, we ducked into the nearby town to the Settlers Arms pub during the day, where there was live music playing in the courtyard, it was lovely. The hosts were incredibly communicative and helpful throughout our stay.
If you’re after a rustic, one-of-a-kind getaway, this is it.

We stayed here with our three children. While it wasn’t the most ideal setup for a young family, the quirky, back-to-basics charm really shone through for our 5- and 8-year-olds. No phones, no iPads – just fire, play, and conversations.
With St Albans only a few kilometres away, we were able to enjoy a day of adventure there, as well as Wisemans Ferry, where the girls loved paddling on the sandbanks by the park.
The shack itself has loads of charm and would be especially perfect for a couple or a small group of adults wanting to cook, share a bottle of wine, relax, and soak up the nature all around.
We still thoroughly enjoyed our stay with the girls – and they did too, which is the main thing. The host was super communicative and responsive, and we were well looked after. Shack charm – a winner.

We had a gorgeous stay at the Mountain Shack at Halifax Hill. A delightful shack with rustic beauty and an earthy, artsy feel.
It had everything we needed and more- indoor and outdoor fires, board games galore, electric blankets on the bed, cooking facilities- all in a beautiful and peaceful location. Steve & Helen were responsive and prompt communicators and the whole trip was smooth and easy from start to finish. Our toddler and our dog had a ball, too. Highly recommend to anyone wanting a relaxing hideaway, perfect for couples, families or friends! Thanks Steve & Helen- we will be back!

I absolutely loved my stay at Halifax hill!! It’s such a beautiful home, bursting with art and so very cosy. It’s incredibly serene and filled with sunshine throughout the day. A great collection of records and games, the lounge room was a perfect place to relax and unwind! The kitchen was very spacious and had all you needed to make a delicious meal. We had a wonderful time staying in the chalet. The Hip Camp description is spot on, and the chalet itself is functional, but contains exactly what you need. Comfortable beds (single and bunks) with clean bedding and towels. Functional kitchen that facilitates cooking for large groups (11ppl in our case). A fun adventure arriving via ferry and suspension bridge, do make sure you follow the well written directions exactly, to avoid getting lost! Expansive grounds, that can clearly host a lot more people if you also take the camping area. There is lots of exploring to be done, bush walks, hills and a river. I’d really recommend if you’re after an easy group or family adventure, with close access to Sydney. Thank you Lynda, we’ll come again!
