This is not a place for parties and loud noise, but if you want to get away from it all and relax in a secluded Campsite surrounded by beautiful Native Bushland or explore miles of trails, gullies, caves, Flight Springs Creek and the exquisite Bow River, take some time to camp at Hillside, which is a remote 2000 acre working cattle property situated 23km west of MERRIWA, 17 km off the Golden Highway, adjoining the Goulburn River National Park. Most sites are in secluded area's far away from each other but at busy times people may pass by some sites to access the river. There are plenty of walking trails and for the enthusiastic bushwalker, the Bow River winds its way 7km down to the Goulburn River through the National Park with its gentle flowing stream and rock pools nestled between sandstone cliffs of caves. All sites are pet friendly, but pets must be kept on leash and cleaned up after. Campfires are allowed when there are no restrictions. Cut firewood is available on request $20 lots, cash only. 4WD and High vehicles are recommended as tracks have rocky outcrops and some areas of loose sand. Some sites can be accessed by 2WD. The Bow River area is strictly 4WD (Low Range) access ONLY as it is extremely steep with loose gravel and rocky outcrops. AWD (All wheel drive) vehicles will not get back out. For all 4WD areas please let your Tyres down to 25psi to help conserve our tracks. Outback 4WD tracks are now open for campers to explore as well as Hidden Valley. All sites have toilets, but guests will need their own shower facilities and must take all waste and rubbish with them on departure. Phone Service is very limited in this area. If you email a request, sometimes it may take a few hours for us to reply. No motorbikes or chainsaws and no hunting allowed. WARNING: There are many areas of cliff edges and shear drops! Our comfortable Hut is situated on an elevated spot looking down on the river with a graduated road leading down. It has everything you need for a relaxing, recharging stay in nature. The Hut can accommodate up to 4 people, however, you also have the option for up to 6 additional guests to set up swags, tents, or a camper trailer nearby. There is space next to the Hut, or for those with a 4WD, there are some lovely camping sites down by the river. We also offer sites for those looking for a self-contained camping site, in a beautiful location. We love the solitude, the endless bush walks, swimming, and being immersed in nature. Great spot here bordering Goulburn River National Park. Dave has put a huge effort into building walking trails and has created a great mud map to show you the way. We took a 4wd only campsite. Make sure you do have a good 4wd if you take this option because you definitely need it to get back out. Plenty of wildlife around. Even turtles in the river.. Plenty to explore.

Hillside at Merriwa is a beautiful 2,000-acre property. Dave is very responsive to enquiries and will meet you at the gate to show you to your campsite. The wildlife is incredible — we saw goannas, an echidna, wombats, plenty of wallabies and kangaroos, and even a few eagles. Dave clearly puts a lot of work into maintaining the many campsites, and the 4WD tracks are very well kept and well signposted. We found a gorgeous spot on the Bow River for lunch and a swim. Dave discourages the collection of firewood as some guests haven’t done the right thing in the past, so you’ll need to bring your own or purchase some from him. And whatever you do, don’t drive through Merriwa without getting a pie from the bakery — they’re delicious.

Marilyn and Peter were wonderful, warm hosts. This campsite is on a beautiful piece of land and we were free to explore our surroundings. Marilyn let us know that we could walk as far as we liked in any direction and there was little chance we would walk far enough to exit the 3000 acre property. The river is beautiful with a little beach for swimming on the other side. The farm is absolutely beautiful with rolling hills and plenty of friendly cows. We had an amazing time exploring the property and the surrounding area.

Loved camping here over the weekend! There were plenty of nice spots to choose from all surrounded by beautiful mountain scenery. We spotted some kangaroos and wombats and got to see and hear many various species of birds. Jake was super friendly and helpful with showing us around his farm. He stopped to check up a couple times and just to have a few chats while we were walking around and while up at the spa We walked around the farm saw the cows and checked out the waterhole. Not huge, but a cute little natural pool, discovered some yabbies and tadpoles. We played with puppy ‘Rabbit’ and watched as she learnt how to work on the farm with the cows. The spa was spacious, clean and the perfect temperature. Enjoyed the amazing views from up there! We made a green tree frog friend who didn’t mind sharing the water with us too. We enjoyed our stay. Thanks Jake! Overall great experience :)

Weekend Trip to Hillside Camp on Bow River

My partner and I have stayed here twice now this spring and are already keen to go back. The first time we stayed in the group sites but had no issue with noise or neighbours. We explored the tracks and caves and river, and had such a good time that we came back a month later with friends. Stayed on the Flights Ridge site that has awesome views and the cleanest port-a-loo I’ve ever used! (1 loo per site!) 4x4 tracks are well looked after, well sign posted and varied in difficulty. The place is out in the country but the host gives accurate arrival details and meets you at the gate! The site is amazing and super varied, and Dave the host is super hospitable, helpful and friendly. We will absolutely be back!

Weekend Trip to Hillside Camp on Bow River

My son and I loved camping at David’s place and what a place it was! Absolutely beautiful country, and whilst we’ve camped at a few big properties (couple of thousand acres) this was by far the most camper friendly I’ve experienced. David was an absolute legend, very informative and super helpful, he met us at the gate and escorted us out to Riverside campsite, explained everything along the way. They have sign-posted and mapped the entire property making it almost impossible to get lost. We enjoyed long hikes into the bush, caves and all across acres of amazing bushland and lookouts. The best part was walking along Bow River for km’s and swimming in the waterholes. There’s not a huge amount of water this time of year with the drought, but beautiful enough to enjoy what’s there. I couldn’t imagine how incredible the river would be after some proper soaking rains. Animals everywhere, and the wildlife here will surprise you. Highly recommended and please look after the land by leaving no trace. Thanks David, Max and I loved your place and can’t wait to come back again soon.

Had the most amazing few days on the property. Toilet, dog friendly, on a little river, able to have a camp fire, shade......honestly just ticked all boxes. The night sky's are jaw dropping and watching 🛰 satellites are lots of fun. Relaxing, bushwalking and a bit of 4WDing Above and beyond with their signage and mud maps for 4WD tracks, including how tricky each are. Walking trails clearly displayed. AMAZING caves, escarpments and lots of critters to watch. Host were fantastic with their communication and making sure we were happy. Cannot thank them enough for allowing us onto their property. Rugged and beautiful.

Spent 4 nights at the Nile and had a great time. Jake and his Family couldn’t be more welcoming. Loved the additional 4wd tour of the property and the view from the spa was fantastic. Will definitely be booing in another visit.

Gully view was well grassed and flat. We really enjoyed driving the 4x4 trails and views, Exploring Bow river and all it's caves was probably the highlight of our stay. Amazing. Dave was super helpful and laidback. We'll definitely return 🤠

David’s land was amazing! There’s so much space to explore and plenty to see and do. The caves are unreal, and the wildlife was incredible — we spotted wombats, kangaroos, and even a few goannas. Highly recommend camping here if you’re after a true nature experience!

Where to go

The Drip

This beautiful walk meanders along the Goulburn River to “the great dripping wall,” colloquially known as The Drip, where water trickles down the sandstone rock. About 40 minutes’ north of Mudgee, the 2.8-km hike begins and ends at the car park, where there are also picnic tables. While you’re there, visit the Indigenous rock art site Hands on Rock, 2 km north at Ulan.

Ferntree Gully Reserve

Wander through the rainforest admiring the gully of eroded sandstone on one of several walks at Ferntree Gully, an hour’s drive west of Mudgee. You can walk through the fern and orchid-filled valley floor and around the top of the gully admiring the view. Lyrebirds are also regularly spotted here.

Dunns Swamp

Despite its name, this hidden gem on the banks of the Cudgegong River in Wollemi National Park is a gorgeous wilderness area. Enjoy a picnic, hop into kayaks or jump on stand-up paddleboards and meander around the waterway. Southern Cross Kayaking offers guided tours and hire from late spring until autumn, during school holidays and on long weekends. It’s just over an hour’s drive west of Mudgee.

Taronga Western Plains Zoo Dubbo

There are no fences or cages at this open-range zoo, under two hours’ northwest of Mudgee. Instead, concealed moats divide animals including lions, elephants, zebras, and giraffes from people, creating the feeling of being in the wild. Known for its breeding and conservation programs, the zoo is home to more than 5,000 animals from over 350 species.

When to go

The Mudgee region can be very hot in summer (December to February), and very cold in winter (June to August), so it’s best to visit in spring or autumn when the dry leaves make it even more picturesque. Long weekends and public holidays can get extremely busy. A number of festivals are held throughout the year—the biggest is the Mudgee Food and Wine Festival in late September and early October.

Mudgee is about a 3.5-hour drive northwest of Sydney in Central West NSW.
The town has three supermarkets: Coles, Woolworths, and Aldi.
Mudgee Camping and 4WD stocks a large range of camping, fishing, and outdoor products to help improve your camping experience, as well as 4WD accessories, along with a fully equipped workshop to fit them.
Reverse angle parking is a requirement in the centre of Mudgee.
Fire bans are common in the Mudgee region and in NSW national parks during summer and dry periods. Be sure to check local recommendations before lighting a campfire.
