Surf, sand, and national parks await in this Wollongong suburb.
Fairy Meadow might conjure up images of a wildflower-filled alpine valley, but this laid-back suburban town is best known for its beautiful beach. Just a 5-minute north of Wollongong CBD, Fairy Meadow Beach has long sandy shores, consistent surf, and magnificent sunsets, as well as a dog beach and a nearby tourist park with seafront camping. About a 1.5-hour drive south of Sydney, it’s easily accessible for urban campers with plenty of opportunities for outdoor activities. Head to nearby Lake Illawarra to fish, boat, and camp by the lagoon, or hike the summits of Mount Keira or Mount Kembla for a magnificent view of the coast and the city. To the north, Royal National Park is a favourite for hikers, with 100 kilometres of bushland and coastal trails, while Dharawal National Park has waterfall hikes and a popular cycling trail.
