The vibe at Songdog West Campsites
If you stayed here and have some insider info for us, let us know!
This place is a gem. I'm almost afraid to rate it so well because I don't want it to get crowded, but credit is due. I hung out here one night with the ranch dogs by the fire watching the sunset and enjoying the stars. Jim was a great host. Will be back!
We drove a few hours out of our planned trip to get to Songdog and I was worried about having my husband bag on me for days if it wasn't worth it. Thankfully the drive was beautiful , the campground was remote and nothing short of amazing. Make sure you have the instructions to the campground your cell is worthless there. The ranch itself had the truck door open (Owner may not be home) for Gypsy the camp dog that spent the evening with us .We took cool showers in the waterhose on the grounds. It does get hot during the summer days so bring a kiddie pool, water guns and drinking water. We are going to go back with friends and family and rent all 4 campsites!
Songdog is honestly the most beautiful campsite I have ever been to!! There was some rain the day we were set to camp and we almost cancelled our plans, but are SO glad we didn't. The property is beautiful by nature and absolutely beautifully kept -- no trash, well kept pavillions and probably the cleanest outhouse you'll ever find. The sites look down over the valley and mountains, giving an incredible sunset experience. Each site has plenty of space to itself, giving a relaxing sense of privacy. Very nice chairs are provided too, which makes sunset viewing and sitting by the campfire even more cozy. Thank you so much to Songdog for making this wonderful space open and welcoming to campers! I really can't wait to come back again :)
A tranquil oasis surrounded by barren landscape in the middle of nowhere. Tasteful set up with sheltered tables and benches, a fire pit with chairs. Drinking water. Good views and sunsets, and - depending on your fellow campers - great atmosphere. Property dogs Gypsy and Jill are awesome. Ojai is about 1.5 hour drive through Los Padres National Forest.
Exceeded our expectations! We were looking forward to a tranquil evening under the stars and got more than we imagined. The ranch was easy to find and Jim, the ranch owner is really great! We felt right at home as soon as we got there. There is so much land to explore and the views are breathtaking. We were the only ones there for the night and it was so peaceful. The ranch dogs really made the stay all that more enjoyable. They hung out with us the entire time. We will be back!
This campsite is a real find. It really feels like a good escape from the world. Jim is the perfect host - friendly, welcoming and very accommodating without being intrusive in any way. His beautiful ranch dogs were also good company. The campsite is beautifully kept and well worth a visit.
Amazing campsite! The quietness on the Mesa is astounding. With nothing but us and the stars, we thoroughly enjoyed getting away from the city here. When we camped there was no one there and it felt like being out in the wilderness, despite the easy access and comfort of the amenities. The abundant wildlife was a joy to see, though at night there is a lot of rustling from the rabbits and mice.
What a spot! I arrived late in the day after a long cold motorcycle ride to the ranch. Jim, the ranch owner, greeted me by inviting me into his home and splitting a bottle of wine with me.
The campsites are awesome. Super neat landscaping on top of a 200 ft Mesa overlooking the ranch property and valley below. Each site has a fire ring, and covered picnic table. There's enough vegetation between sites that even if booked at capacity (it's only 4 sites anyway) you'll still feel private.
The dogs are awesome and will hang around your campsite at will to keep you company and keep any coyotes, rabbits, or tennis balls at bay. They showed up the following morning wanting to play fetch.
All in all one of the coolest places I've stayed. If you're on a motorcycle trip, or just looking for a cool spot to stargaze give this place a shot. I did tent camping, but they also offer a "glamping" (glamorous camping) site near by. If the primitive sites are any indication, I'm sure it's well done and as beautiful as the rest of the property. Supplies (beer, food ice, etc) are only an easy 15 minute drive away. If you have Verizon, cell service is reliable. And if you need firewood, Jim will supply you with some thick, dry, ready to light firewood (I've been sold wet soggy unlightable wood before)
Judging by the inside that I saw, Jim's B&B would also be a great place. He's truly built a remarkable property out there. It was a privilege to stay on the property. If you're still waffling, JUST BOOK IT!
Only caveat: you will drive a dirt road up a 200ft mesa to your campsite. If you're in a car truck or SUV towingatrailer you're fine. If you're on a bike, itigjt be tricky unless you're riding ADV or dual sport. If it hasn't rained your fine regardless
Great spot. 10/10, would (and will) come again
What a gem. We camped here recently and basically had the place to ourselves. The views are amazing and you can truly unwind here. Of course this is still primitive camping but that is exactly what we like about it.
Jim's (the owner) dog visited us on a regular basis. A lovely dog, high energy, wants to play ball all day long. Mike's (ranch hand) german shepherd basically stayed with us all the time and slept outside the tent overnight.
From here you can visit Carrizo Plains national monument. A wonderful drive across beautiful plains, partly unpaved. Absolutely worth a visit.
Of course the 33 from Ojai to the campground is also an absolute must see. Views and curves galore. Great for motorbikes!
Our camping experience at Songdog was one for the books (visited at the end of May). Perched on top of a hill, the sunset views were beyond dreamy. We had the entire "campground" to ourselves, but even if there were other campers, the sites are spaced far enough apart to still make it feel very private. The provided chairs, shaded picnic table area, and fire rings were welcomed touches. Jim was so personable, he went above and beyond. Such a great host! Will definitely be returning.
We had the best time at Songdog! Beautiful sunset and unbelievable star gazing. really friendly owner and such sweet Ranch dogs that hung out with us the whole time! Gets a bit windy since you're on a mesa but we didn't mind. The outhouse was super clean and convenient. Cute, too! Highly recommend for a unique camping experience! We will be back for sure.
The most incredible camping experience ever! I hope it stays a hidden gem. Jim was the kindest, most welcoming host. We stayed here on NYE and we're surprised with snow. It was a magical time! The campgrounds are beautiful, clean, and private; and the views are insane. Definitely doesn't feel like you're in California. We will definitely be back.
What an absolutely place. You stay atop this beautiful mesa overlooking a canyon and it's just breathtaking. Jim is a very attentive and kind host, he set us up with fire wood both nights and let us move about the camp freely. The camp dogs are super sweet and the place is very unique. The only observation is that some campsites may be a bit close to each other so that's great if you're going with a group, may be a bit less isolated if it's a couple of different groups, but some people like socializing more than others, just a thought!
This place is amazing! My buddy and I stopped for a night on our motorcycle trip to North California. We stayed at the camping site #2 and we setup our tents next the cliff which has a great view of the ranch. The camping site itself is well organized, you get a table and two benches are under shade, two chairs, the fire pit and the grill. Really happy with the experience. If you are thinking about this place - book it!
I share the same sentiments as one of the previous reviewers where I almost didn't want to leave a review because I selfishly want to keep this place my little secret! Jim is so nice and hospitable, the grounds are pristine, the dogs Jill and Gypsy are the cutest, the stars are magical, and because of all the recent rain everything was lush and green. I will definitely be coming back here with my friends and family. Thanks for the great trip!
Songdog Campsites was great to get away from the city. Not too far from LA and felt pretty remote. Jim (the ranch owner) was very friendly and helpful, along with his pup Jill. Clean, organized and could do pretty much anything you wanted. Songdog ranch was well worth it!!
Highly recommended! Agree with the reviews here, pretty much the perfect camping site. Only a few sites, so not too busy, super dog friendly (I think everyone staying there had a dog with them) and hearing the coyotes at night was pretty special. Jim is an incredibly friendly and welcoming host. One bit of advice though, it seems the word is definitely out about SongDog, so it will start to book up fast.
I highly recommend Songdog campsites. We stayed in the west campsites, but the east campsites are on the same mesa and only a few-minute walk. The solitude and beauty here is wonderful, yet you are only a few minutes from town if you need ice, for example. We had 360 degree views from our campsite, as would all of the sites. And the view goes on for miles. Quite impressive. The sites are far enough away from each other, and shielded with shrubs and trees, so you'd feel even more privacy than you would at most campgrounds. This is a special experience, and I recommend it highly. The owner is wonderful; the dogs are great (and I don't say that about all dogs); the sky is tremendous; the outhouse is clean. Carizzo Plain is within easy driving distance. We can't wait to come back.
When we went (10/22) we were the only ones up on the Mesa. There is a lot of land to explore which made our pup very happy to roam around. We met Jim right when we arrived and he was really friendly, offered us firewood if we needed it, and told us how to get to our site. Super peaceful and beautiful. We have already talked about our next trip!
Went for the night on 11/27/16 and it was fantastic! We had the place to ourselves and it was very peaceful. "Check-in" was simple...you just go to your spot. There were 2 provided comfy chairs, a fire-pit, and nice views all around. We were looking for some hiking and we lucked out because the property has great trails that go and go. The ranch dogs made it even more fun as they spent a lot of time up there with us! Definitely would recommend.
Great time! Beautiful place! Phenomenal views! We loved hearing the coyotes yipping in the distance! Had the whole mesa all to ourselves, nobody except for the friendly little German shepherd that occasionally stopped in to check on us (who might actually be the camp site host). ;) Would love to come again!
Songdog was a beautiful place to spend a weekend away. It's secluded and mildly desolate, which is exactly what my group was looking for. The host, Jim, is an extraordinary host and helped us as needed. He even showed us his home and other parts of the property. Can't wait to come back again!
came here for my 30th birthday with my boyfriend and it was the most relaxing and enjoyable weekend! the directions are so easy. we ran into Jim on the way to our site while he was doing some work and he was so nice and welcoming. the land is so well taken care of; very clean and just beautiful. so glad we found songdog ranch!
Oh what a magical magical place! Jim is just the coolest cat around. The location is beautiful. And you're super close to the Carrizo Plain National Monument...which no-one really knows about but it's awesome. Definitely a two thumbs up. Particularly like how much care is taken with the campsites. Jim even leaves you chairs to sit in. Thanks for sharking your land!
WOW! Is how to describe the place! The campsite is well maintained, not too close to each other, clean porta potty, has water and water hose per site, has it's own fire pit, own garbage and did I mentioned that the site is on top of the hill and also flat? That my friend only mean one thing...a commanding view of the valley and stars at night!
If you have a mt. bike, bring it..there's a lot of nice trail in the area (don't expect any jumps though), lots of place to hike (but make sure you have water with you as the place is open and if you have ATV or Motocross, at the end of the road, there's a trail, just for that.
The closest place to eat is only 6 mi away and I highly recommend it and it's called "The Place! Don't compare them to regular restaurant as they are the mom and pops place.
The owner Jim is very accommodating. We left our coffee pot and he let us borrow his. And also, please dont bring your own firewood..buy the firewood with Jim..only $10 that would last you through the night.
And did I say that the site is on top of the hill?
Songdog is absolutely one of the BEST and most unique campsites I have ever camped in. Jim and his son Ben are so incredibly friendly and helpful and ensure that you have everything you need. No doubt in my mind that we will be returning... that is, if we can find a spot ;)! Thank you guys, we had a blast!
My girlfriend and I stayed at Songdog for a Saturday night. The area is beautiful - epic views, great sunset and amazing views of the nightsky that are not disrupted by light polution.
The amenities are great and tents well spaced out. Jim was a great host and drove out to welcome us.
I would thoroughly recommend and look forward to coming back!
Beautiful site. Campsites were spread out well. Everyone seemed to have dogs, but they all seemed to settle into their own sites without barking at each other all night. Beautiful views on top of the mesa. Had a great campfire and relaxing few nights. They had a great covered picnic area and chairs around the campfire. outhouse had a solar light so u could see it at night. Making it impossible to get lost. The only time we got lost was trying to find our site in the dark. But Jim came up to help us. :). Jim was very very helpful.
Our trip here was wonderful! It's really amazing camping up on a ridge instead of under trees, the views looking down over the ridge and looking up at the start without trees blocking your view are incredible! The campsite itself is nice because you're provided with a picnic table with tin roof cover, trashcan, metal fire pit, bench, and two chairs. You can buy firewood from Jim for $10 (includes lighter fluid, matches, and tinder sticks). Campsites #1 and #2 are really close to each other which was unfortunate for us since there were two crying kids next door. Campsite #4 is the most secluded. One negative we found was there was broken glass around our fire pit. But other than that, Jim the host was very kind, the views were great (especially the drive from Ventura through Las Padres National Forest), and all in all it made for wonderful car camping!
We were very pleased with Jim and the Songdog West campsites. There are 4 sites at Songdog West, each with its own pagoda, picnic table, fire ring, potable water hose, trash barrel, and 2 chairs; there is an outhouse shared by the 4 sites. Jim will provide wood and starter for a nominal fee. Sites with a bathing tub are available through Jim's other listings, so if you are seeking a tub, be sure to reach out to him and ask which ones. Jim was very helpful in sharing the available hiking spots. This is a winning site for people who prefer to car camp since it feels so secluded compared to public camgrounds!
Had a great time at Songdog West, even despite the heat! The site itself sits on top of a mesa at the ranch. Each site is equipped with fire pit (small grill on top but don't prepare your own if you plan to do real cooking), picnic table, shaded gazebo, chairs and a hose. We were at site 2, closest to the outhouse. If you'd like more privacy and the best views, I would go for 3 or 4. Jim was incredibly accommodating and helpful! It was a great time for our dog as well, as he got to chase lots of rabbits. I would definitely camp here again!
What a great spot for camping! Jim and his family were extremely gracious and the campsite was already stocked with firewood, matches, and lighter fluid for me to easily start a campfire. A shade structure, picnic table, and extra chairs were also nearby for me to use. The surroundings were beautiful and it was a great place to rest for the night. I will definitely return!
Great place. We were on site #4 which is away from the other sites, so we had a lot of privacy and quiet. The nightly star views are amazing (though some tractor noise from the valley was there through most of the night) and the coyote's singing at night re-affirmed the site's name.
We went 7/2, it is a bit hot and dry, so definitely keep that in mind if you are planning to hang out there all day.
Jim was very helpful with getting us set up and provided us with a bigger grate for our BBQ'ing. He also sells firewood for $10, which is enough for a good night and morning fire.
The outhouse comes as clean as one can expect from an outhouse, IMHO.
Would definitely come back, though maybe not at the height of summer.
My husband and I hosted about 25 guests at the Speakeasy Lodge/Songdog West campsites for our wedding celebration. Jim is a wonderful host and he and his lovely girlfriend were able to join us for the celebration. The lodge had everything we needed (just be sure to bring enough lanterns for the nighttime). The views were incredible and our guests could not stop asking how in the world we found this place. It is truly special. Thank you, Jim!!
Songdog ranch is a modest retreat the perfect distance from LA. Campsites had a shaded picnic table, a few chairs and a fire ring which was perfect. Water is available nearby and each campsite is spaced fairly far apart so that you still felt isolated if that is what you are after. All in all a great place to get away.
As other reviewer's have mentioned, this place is nothing short of a dream come true. I booked the west campgrounds, and we had such an amazing time!
Jim was so nice and welcoming when I first met him, so it set the tone of the weekend. He made sure we had everything we needed and he even helped us jumpstart my friend's car. The campgrounds themselves were unbelievable as they were secluded, clean, and beautiful. It did get hot during the day (duh we knew this beforehand given the landscape) but each campgroud came with a shade structure and a hose, so we just lounged and relaxed. Here's some info that might help others:
- there is one toilet for the four campgrounds (This was definitely enough for our group)
- The water from the hose is hard but drinkable
Just amazing in every way. We are so glad we went out of our way to stay here. The host and ranch hand are both very welcoming and friendly. The site is spacious and well equipped and came with 2 chairs which was helpful for us as we were 1 short. We loved the clean drop toilet and were easily able to have an outdoor shower under the hosepipe. It was hot enough that the water was warm. My 2 boys loved playing with the friendly ranch dogs who never wanted to stop playing fetch. Sunsets are spectacular and the peace is wonderful - this is a very special place, made more special by the seclusion and simplicity of the site. The price was good and we felt we had made a great choice in choosing to stay.
We had a lovely visit and are definitely planning another trip here soon. The campsites here all seem to be equipped with a fire pit & cooking grill, shaded picnic table and a hose with running water. There is a centrally located and easy to find outhouse. The hosts were gracious & welcoming, and the dogs were a joy to hang out with. The stargazing was 👌👍👏Can't wait to come back again! Thanks for everything!
Songdog was amazing and absolutely a spot I would come back to. We got in pretty late, but Jim was still super friendly and had an adorable dog who ran up to the campsite to hang out with us most of the night. The sky was clear and there was very little light pollution from the surrounding area, so the view of the stars was pretty spectacular. The outhouse is also surprisingly clean, which was much appreciated.
Songdog far exceeded my expectations, and I had such a memorable time there. Hoping to book multiple sites and come back with friends sometime :)
Beautiful and spacious campsite, and Jin's a wonderful host! We stayed with our two dogs and they enjoyed exploring, and we had room to play fetch with them! The only downside for us was the loud music played by guests at the lodge on Friday and Saturday nights. We prefer quiet when camping. We'd be inclined to book again, but on a weekday when we would enjoy more, or perhaps maybe check with Jim to see if a large group has booked his lodge.
Our camping experience at Song Dog Ranch was the best! We stayed in the West campsite number 2 and it was perfect. Jim was super helpful and extremely kind. Gypsy and Jill (the dogs) stated with us over the night and were great companions. We rented a tube from Jim which helped us stay cool the entire time. We felt very comfortable and stress feel. The views are breathtaking. We will definitely return and recommend the campsite to all our friends and family. Thank you, Jim, for sharing a little piece of your paradise! 🙏 Until next time...!
Jim and his wife were incredibly nice and friendly people. They thought of everything in terms of amenities while keeping the four sites separated enough for privacy. We stayed on site three, which had a ton of space. We've never had a personal hose at a campsite before and it was amazing to be able to bathe or cool off in the hundred degree weather. The fire pit was on the smaller side, which makes sense in an area more prone to wildfires. It had a rotating grill top though that made cooking convenient. There was also a tin roof shelter for shade and rain cover with a picnic table under it. A few tips: There's a dirt road with an incline to get up to the plateau and it can be a little rough for some cars, especially if you have a Honda Fit with a tiny engine like we did. We still got up and down fine but I'd think twice about driving a sports car or an old beater with a manual transmission up there. Make use of the hose and bring a little kiddie pool to chill in. Besides the shelter there is very little shade so prep for that. It's definitely not bear country but we noticed a bunch of ant colonies and even a little kangaroo mouse looking for easy meals so just use common sense. We did hear coyotes howling pretty loudly in the early morning, which we thought was awesome. I don't believe they come around but we heard them so I guess it's a possibility. Again, use common sense about leaving food out. Lastly, the area this ranch is had few gas stations and they cost a bit more so I'd fill up before getting there. Would definitely stay there again to try and catch a starry night.
Such an amazing and beautiful site! We really enjoyed our time here.... the campsites are well kept, the owner (Jim!) is welcoming, and the camp dogs Gypsy and Jill were great company! There is plenty of room to spread out and explore and the individual sites are quite comfortable. The views couldn't be beat -- even with it being overcast the entire time we were there. We are looking forward to coming back + catching a starry sky. Very Serene & Very Highly recommended!!!!!
What a great getaway. We decided to take a last minute trip in our 85 Vanagon, as we often do, and see a new part of the region. We'd been wanting to give Songdog a try for a while now. We hesitated a little because of the hot temps but once we arrived, we were more than pleased. Easy to find after a beautiful drive. The West Campsites were minimal but more than equipped for outdoor fun. We stayed at #3 and found the shade structure and firepit to be perfectly situated with a great sunset view and even better stargazing. Firewood can be purchased from Jim at the ranch down the hill for a more than reasonable price. Each site has it's own water spigot and easy access to simple pit toilets. Really enjoyed our stay and look forward to returning soon.
Two first-time mom campers with two 5 year old boys and we had a blast! The host (and friendly dogs Jill n Gypsy) welcomed us, sold us some firewood, n showed us to our site. There's loads of open space for boys to play and explore. We paid extra for a cowboy pool n the boys loved it. Jim also told us about the tree house his granddaughters built and our boys loved finding it. We star gazed and enjoyed s'mores. Easy fire pit set up. We thoroughly enjoyed our time and are now converts to camping!
