This is a difficult review for me to write because of my conflicting feelings. As for the campsite and property, it was perfect. Privacy, views, all of it as promised. I wanted to go to a place that had no hints of coronavirus or politics, an escape from the madness. This place would have provided all of the above if not for something unexpected. At the owner's home where you check in, there is a tall flagpole with a large American flag as well as a large Trump 2020 flag. Seeing this changed the feel of the place for me. We were able to relax and enjoy the beauty of our surroundings, nonetheless. The next day, Jim, the owner, arrived at our site to check on things. He mentioned the coronavirus and I asked if it was affecting his business. Didn't realize this would lead to exactly what I thought I was escaping, conspiracy theory rhetoric. We debated without it getting heated, but it was still uncomfortable. He believes that the hospitals are lying on on cause of death documentain in order to receive federal money. He feels we need to let the virus take it's course naturally, and that it's no worse than the flu. All of the same things I've heard from the conspiracy theory promoters. I understand that this is private property, but I did pay my own hard earned money for the tranquility promised in his description. I don't think he should talk to his customers about such a sensitive political issue. If this won't affect you negatively, then it's a great place to get away from it all. For everyone else, I advise you to avoid discussions with Jim, or just change the subject if he brings up the coronavirus. I hesitated to write this in my review, but since it did affect my experience there, I decided it should be included in this write up.
Songdog and Jim are the best! This is really what Hipcamping is all about. Jim has created an oasis in the middle of the badlands, with a huge variety of sites to choose from depending on what you're looking for. Draw Camp, one of his newest ones, is as the end of the road past the other Songdog West sites, on the far end of the mesa. All of the dirt roads are drivable with a regular little passenger car, and this one dead ends in a loop at your campsite. No neighbors in sight or earshot (the outhouse shared with other sites is a little walk away, but that ensures total privacy). In mid-April, the flowers are unbelievable — there were thick blankets of flowers in every direction. We were lucky with the superbloom, but Jim said every April is still beautiful.
The site has his standard setup with a picnic table, pergola, firepit and grill, trash can, water spigot, and two very comfortable lounging chairs — everything you need to just settle in and stay for awhile. Even though it was still quite relatively cool, we opted to spring for the extra soaking tub to fully enjoy the sun, and we were so glad we did. Jim brings it right up to your site and sets it all up for you — he even knows the best spot to put it for maximum views. When it's hot, nothing feels better!
Sunsets are amazing up here; you have a line of sight across the whole expanse of the valley, stretching out to the mountains on the other side. And the stars are night are crisp and clear. It's just so quiet and peaceful, and we didn't want to leave.
Jim is such a wonderful and experienced host, too. He has firewood for sale if needed, and is full of local tips and suggestions. We were headed up to Carrizo Plain the next day (just a quick drive up the highway, so close!) and he gave us a map and detailed instructions to get to the best spots. We're already planning the next trip back and can't figure out if we want to try out other areas of Songdog, or stick to this one most perfect campsite ever. Thank you, Jim!
Heaven on earth
Jim's property is spectacular and so is Jim! I've camped all over California, and this was the best site I've been to so far. Meticulously up-kept and clean, right down to the ground under and around the picnic table having been raked and tidied. Jim provided a trash can with closing lid, and water at the site. The nearby bathroom was too cute for words, and cleaner than any camping toilet I've ever used. The site/area had less bugs than I thought it would for the summer season, the shade structure was great, and the privacy was great. I loved the tub he brings and fills with cold water to cool down. Sat in there and watched the sunset over the mountains, with an unobstructed view of the valley below. Can I move in? I booked my next trip there while soaking in the tub drinking a beer. Can't wait to come back with the kiddos in a few weeks! We drove around the other sites, and no matter what site you book in East or West camp, or the Draw camp which I stayed in and is more off by itself, all are worth a million dollars. All are far enough away from one another to be private. One last thing, the wildlife was sooo plentiful and amazing. Saw a beautiful barn owl soaring on the breeze right above us, super close, what a great sighting! Thanks Jim, see you again soon!
Songdog is the best
This was our second time staying at Songdog and Jim and the site were amazing! There was some confusion regarding our site, but Jim was extremely quick and generous in rectifying the situation. We love how friendly he is and how the site makes you want to stay longer than the time you have it booked for.
We love that Jim keeps the sites extremely tidy. My hubby was excited that the toilet was stocked with soft toilet paper. We also like the wood Jim has available for purchase. He starts you up with lighter fluid and fire starters and our fire lasts all night. The option to rent out a tub to stay cool in will be ideal for when it gets hotter later in the year. We can't wait to go back and try his other sites. Thanks for another wonderful trip Jim!
Amazing sunset views
Loved staying here for the night with the kids. We stayed at Draw Camp which demands a view of the valley below and catches a killer sunset. Nice table, benches and chairs and ample locations for our tent. Jim greeted us and we bought wood which he kindly delivered. Well dispersed camp sites so very private. But the REAL outstanding option was the tub. A massive self filling bath big enough for the entire family. Delivered and filled at our site. A must on a hot day. What a great idea right?!?!
Jim is such a good host at song dog ranch! He is welcoming and respects your privacy too. There are mini hikes you can do from the campsite and the kids brought their bikes which the trails were good for! The campsite was peaceful and watching the sunset in the Californian tepid bath was magical! I’d definitely go back!
Our stay at Draw Camp was great! This spot had the most amazing view and was very secluded. We weren't sure where to go when we arrived and ended up at the Song Dog Ranch house, where Jim met us and showed us to the site. The tub was an awesome addition I definitely recommend!
