Quiet and private campground
Our stay at the goat pens was wonderful! It was just as expected, very private, quiet & comfortable. Jeff was great & made sure to go around to all campsites to meet everyone. One thing we did not anticipate was the amount of wind that comes through the campground, not sure if this was a seasonal happening as we were there in the spring but it made it a bit challenging to set up camp. We actually moved sites on the second night to a different area to try to get out of the wind & that helped a lot. It is nice that you have the option to do that in this camp ground. So just make sure you have plenty of good stakes & are prepared for some wind if you are going in the spring time. The 2 outhouse type bathrooms were very clean & well maintained. It was nice to have a bit of running water to wash hands & hand sanitizer as you go out the door. They were also centrally located & there is plenty of room to drive up to them & park if your campsite is far away from them. We did not use the shower but saw its location & are so grateful for Jeff & his team taking the time to haul water to fill the tank on the hill so that guests can have a place to rinse off. We did not do much exploring at the ranch as we spent our days at BBNP. This is a great place to stay for access to BBNP. It took us less than 20 min to get to the park entrance each day. Also very close to Terlingua ghost town with restaurants near by. Overall w loved it & would definitely stay again! Only thing that I can think would make it better was if there was a map of the campsites &/or campgrounds so that you have an idea of where the sites are when you arrive. We drove in & it took us a bit to figure out that the fire rings indicated where the campsites were located. After we realized that we found a site pretty easy but if we had a simple map of the layout that would have been helpful.
The goatpens is dope
The Goatpens was great! Secluded but not desolate. Jeff was extremely helpful and knowledgeable. Clean bathrooms and hot water in the shower. Lots of campsites spread throughout the property. Food, water, and ice are available nearby in Terilingua. BBNP is a quick shot down the road, 10 minutes tops to the entrance. Can’t beat the price and location of The Goatpens! Looking forward to the reopening of the many amenities offered here once COVID is over.
Been to the Goat Pens a couple of times. Jeff is a good seed. It is a cool place to stay and great for exploring. Jeff let’s you have free roam of the place and let’s you have privacy. Great views!
Explorers dream campground!
Prime location right outside Terlingua, close to Santa Elena Canyon in BBNP. Very well kept campground with interesting geology, flora, and fauna throughout the property. The property owner and host, Jeff, was incredibly knowledgeable about every square inch of the land. We could have stayed here and explored the property for days without ever leaving. You’re in for a special treat with this one! Highly recommend. Wish we could have stayed longer and have gotten to know the host more. Until next time!
Perfect first camping experience
I loved staying at the Goat Pens!!! I would definitely visit again. It was me and my wife's first camping trip and we had a blast. Our favorite part was that we were allowed to have a campfire where we cooked our breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The place had very clean restrooms and a shower with hot water. There are two sections of campsites, one where you can only get to by walking and another one where you can get by vehicle. Campsites are well dispersed and you are not disturbed by others. Jeff was very helpfull when we asked what places we could visit in the area. 100% recommended!
Totally worth the stay. Jeff was super friendly and was really helpful when we got it pretty late. Area is beautiful! We went to BBNP for the day but explored his place at Cigar Ranch as well. Open spaces and beautiful sunrise. Planning to stay here again. About a 35 min drive to the Chisos.
The site was great. Nice location with great views. Jeff's directions were easy to follow and he was there to meet us when we arrived. I highly recommend it for people that want to camp near Terlingua and between the parks.
We had such a great time at the Goat Pens! We got the campsite that you have to walk over a bridge to get to. It was super private and offered a lot of areas for exploring, climbing, and photography. Jeff was an excellent host and made us feel at home. The location was perfect for visiting Big Bend on day hikes as well as surrounding areas. A huge plus for us was the ability to have a camp fire. We would definitely come back!
