Toad Hill

Staying at the bus at Toad Hill during a quite snowy winter’s weekend was just what I was needing for a reset. Beautiful and quite area with easy access to the White Mountains. Cassidy the bus lovely to stay in and the wood stove keeps you very warm. Highly recommend and would stay again!

Columbus Weekend in a Yert

Even though the weather went from Sunshine to Pouring, we spent five days glamping in the Yert. Hubby and I decided that this was one of our best times being here. 7 years of enjoying Toad Hill and the owner that we now consider as part of our family.

We had a decent night of sleep and a pretty walk around the property. I would recommend going to campgrounds when there is still light out. It can be difficult to find the actual site in the dark. Lots of the smaller sites seem un-maintained during the summer.

Secluded White Mountains Camp

Vintage Refurbished Ambulance

My partner and I stayed here for our honeymoon, we loved this yurt! It’s cozy and in such a great location for awesome hikes with great views. The property itself is really cool, and I think it’s good to note that the yurt is the ONLY site with true privacy. It’s at the end of its own dirt road whereas the other sites are either closer together or right on the roadside. Another thing, you will definitely want a 4WD vehicle with decent clearance to get there. The roads are cleared and well marked but mostly rocks and some steep parts. Overall this camp was exactly what we wanted it to be. Unfortunately the people who stayed before us did not follow the carry-in carry-out rule and left their trash behind, but we were happy to carry it out with us. The futon and bed were covered in dirt so we had to do some sweeping before we could set up bedding. This is not glamping by any means, but more so a solid place for the true nature lovers. The outhouse was great to have but I can’t lie, the giant mountain dwelling spiders that live in there are a bit scary! Again, this is a place for true nature lovers lol. A perfect place to go that has almost everything you’ll need, a shelter with a way to safely make a fire, a propane stove for cooking outdoors, some cleaning supplies, and some helpful maps. It’s a lovely bare bones mountain structure camping experience, and the perfect place to stay if you plan on hitting some trails in the white mountains.

Remote yurt firefly experience

The yurt at toad hill was beautifully constructed, and a very comfortable stay. The location is extremely remote so you are able to escape. We saw fireflies and a storm roll Which was super beautiful there and we were cozy !

I am so disappointed. These campgrounds do not match the pictures or reviews. Maybe I caught them at a bad time, and I want to give the benefit of the doubt, but it looks like someone let these sites go a while without maintenance. Overgrown grass and horse fly infestation. My site was blazing hot inside, which I don’t mind because camping, but I was unable to open the window and the provided fan did not work. Hard to choose between horse flies or suffocating inside. It was also extremely filthy inside (and no provided broom to clean it myself). Not a great place for a solo female camper, imo, especially because there is no phone service in a 30-40 minute radius. There was a very kind female that showed up to greet me as I was leaving though! I would love to try again if/ when the place gets fixed up!

Overall, this was a reasonable stay for the price. Cabin was covered in dead bugs, but there was a broom. Property was under construction, but I stayed on a rainy weekend so I didn’t hear much until Sunday morning. Location was convenient for the Whites, but no service, and the gate that others mentioned is a hazard (heavy and drops about 6in as you open it, which can catch you off guard and injured my hand). My biggest complaint was the lack of lock on this accommodation, although it looks like some other units on the property may have them. Fire pits included a grill insert which was nice, and I was happily surprised by a solar panel & power strip which was an added convenience. I was able to drive my 4wd SUV to my site. Hiking off the back of the property which abuts the National forest was nice, but definitely buggy after all the rain.

We LOVE Toad Hill!!!

Always a Great Time, we have been coming here over 6 years and this is our GO TO place! It's never disappointed us. Rain or Shine this place is still awesome. Got back home and few hours and we are ready to book again! WE LOVE TOAD HILL, especially the Yurt! LOVE this place.place.

The owners were great and super friendly! Clear directions as long as you read what they send! Big field with lots of place for pets to run around and multiple firepits! Luna (my dog ) and I will definitely be returning. Also there's trails nearby including a waterfall! Overall we had a great time, and can't wait to come back!

Host Unreliable and unprofessional

Avoid This Site – Host is Unreliable and Unprofessional I strongly advise anyone considering this Hipcamp listing to think twice, especially if you are traveling with small children or relying on the host for any form of assistance. This accommodation requires a 40+ minute hike to reach the campsite. The host, Justin, offered to transport our gear via snowmobile, so we gave him a two-hour heads-up before our arrival. Despite this, we waited in the freezing cold for over four hours, during which he was completely unresponsive and nowhere to be found. After searching the property and attempting to contact him multiple times, we were left stranded without our gear and ultimately had to hike back to our car and leave. A local store owner later warned us that Justin has a sketchy reputation and may struggle with substance abuse issues, which, based on our experience, seems entirely plausible. His complete lack of responsibility left us in an unsafe and unacceptable situation. This was a huge waste of time and money, and we are now fighting for a refund. If you do decide to book, come fully prepared to be self-sufficient, as you cannot rely on the host for anything. I would never return and absolutely do not recommend this site.

Groove Bird Vintage Bus

A couple things to note- DO NOT FOR ANY REASON TAKE THE ROBINS HILL ROUTE!!!! Bad bad route by apple maps that was rough on the car. It started as just gravel and turned much more treacherous. We ended up turning around and taking a different route, and it said the road we we supposed to come out on was a dead end… sus. Note, if you have a souped up vehicle, it could be fun! In terms of the location, it was exactly what we were looking for! Lots of space for our pup to run around, and the trail was UPHILL, but it was fun! If you are looking for the mountain pond, do not take the right that the yellow sign notes! Go forward to the little unkempt path! Note, there is no insulation, running water, it’s a double bed, there were quite a few ladybugs hanging around in the bus as well. But, we loved it! It was exactly what we needed— a little shelter from the chilly night, and we brought lots of blankets!

Toad Hill . . . Best campground!!!!

I would recommend this place to any campers...1st timers & any other campers. We have been coming for over 6 years and it has never let us down. Now, we never go anywhere else and also tell family & friends, and they have loved it as well. Kudos to Justin and Olivia!

1962 Vintage Bus

Overall, the bus was in a great location, ideal for stargazing and hiking, and the wood stove kept us warm on the 40F nights. The fire pit and cooking area was great as well. Unfortunately, there was mouse poop all over the bus when we arrived and the outhouse was not kept clean. If they could up their maintenance a bit and set a few mouse traps for the lodging areas, we would definitely stay again.

Loved it!

My boyfriend & I planned a last second mental health trip. We wanted to be far away from hustle and bustle & we weren’t disappointed! Definitely recommend a vehicle that can handle rugged terrain, my forester did just fine but I could see how bad weather could leave one stuck in spots. We stood in the gypsy one! I absolutely LOVED it, it seems to be a work In progress so we will definitely plan a day in the future to return when it’s completed! It was 100% our vibe, we loved sitting by the fire listening to the sounds of the forest & laughing! Than exploring the palmstry set. Not sure how it’d be in the winter, not insulated yet but there seems to be a heater set up for propane! If you’re a hippie soul this little place will intrigue you !

Nice, but needed cleaning.

Directions to the site were good. When we arrived the Gypsy Caravan was covered throughout with dead Japanese beetles. While cleaning the whole trailer, it was obvious it had not been cleaned in a while (trash, dust, hair, etc.). Outside there was unburned trash in the fire ring (which we packed out). Instructions were to sweep out after use, but there was no broom. So I rummaged around the barn and found a 5” paintbrush to use.

Hornet hideaway

Tipi Tent

Spiders hornets and over growth. We did not stay for our full experience while we understood we would be more exposed than normal, the over abundance of spiders coped with the hornets nest inside the Tipi made for an unejoyable experience. We had hoped with the fire wood we had purchased prior to booking we could warm the place and maybe smoke out some of our unwanted companions. Unfortunately that firewood was no where to be found. The brush built up next to the tipi seemed to add to the stream of insects coming in to visit. We ended up spending the night in our truck and leaving at dawn. The added weeds sprouting up from the floor boards and the established hornets nest left the impression its not cared for regularly.

Solo Travel

The caravan was awesome!! So clean and I felt safe with the dead bolt. However, as a female traveling alone I wish I had a better idea of how off the grid this site is. You off road for a good mile and then the site has zero service. I felt incredibly anxious. Also felt it wasn’t very groomed. I did not feel comfortable wearing my flip flops but wore my boots majority of the time. If you are a camper who loves “roughing it,” this is up your alley. I needed a bit more contact/access with the outside world.

Tipi Tent

You have to expect certain conditions staying outdoors. That said, the pictures are not representative of the site any longer. Base is now surrounded with over growth. No big. Clearly the owner hasn’t visited the site in some time, as there is a baseball sized hornet inside of the tipi, which isn’t what you want to deal with when rolling in late, in dark conditions. Also the advertised firewood bundle wasn’t there, so bring your own. Still can be a good spot if you’ve got time to arrive early, and take care of it yourself, but you can do that for free by setting up your own tent anywhere in the woods, rather than pay for a rental.

Treehouse stay

Tree House Canvas Tent

I had another wonderful stay at Toad Hill! This time we stayed in the tree house. The stay was everything we wanted. A nice unplug, some fun camp cooking and a beautiful adventure to a near by waterfall. Our host was very informative and his assistant was quit helpful as well. Can't wait to go back for another adventure.
