cabin is an off-grid, 12'X20' insulated structure, with a 7'X8' loft and a 12'X6' screened covered porch/deck. That overlooks a small stream and a cattail marsh. It is in the center of our 90 acres and is very private but near to some rural houses, only our house is (barely) visible in winter and you might see some lights of one other neighbor when the leaves are off the trees.
We are 1 and a half miles from the village of Belleville and 5 miles from New Glarus. The Badger State Trail runs across the western edge of our property. It connects with the Sugar River State Trail 8 miles away. Near by New Glarus has many shops, restaurants, Baily's Run winery and the famous New Glarus Brewery (tours daily). Everything can be easily reached by bike or, in season, snowmobile.
The marsh is a haven for all sorts of birds and wildlife. Spring brings an abundance of winged migrators and returning residents. There are: sand hill cranes, red wing blackbirds, a number of ducks; buffleheads, mergansers, woodducks, blue winged teal and shovelers just to name a few. The American woodcock can be heard overhead most spring mornings and evenings. The spring peepers (small frogs) are a symphony on their own and they continue into early summer. The woods has many spring flowers and the fall colors are wonderful. In summer there are many song birds like: bluebirds, finches, orioles, humming birds, cedar wax wings, robins, cardinals and herons. Sitting on the screened in deck one can hear a kaleidoscope of bird songs and activity. And an abundance of fireflies in later May through late July and then some.
The cabin is off-grid, what that means is: there is NO RUNNING WATER in the cabin and only a chemical toilet (port-a-potty). A limited amount of water is supplied for drinking and washing. There is a sink with a drain in the cabin but no bathroom or refrigerator so bring a cooler. Very limited electricity. There is basic LED lighting and you will be able to charge your phones/devices. The power is supplied from batteries/inverter charged by solar panels on the roof. There are LED lights and a coffee maker. There is NO air conditioning but excellent ventilation and a small, cozy wood stove for heat.
If you're uncomfortable or unfamiliar with a wood stove, it may not be wise to stay here in the winter heating season,
but we can show most people how to use the stove safely.
This is still considered "camping" so be prepared to bring camping gear: your own pillows, sleeping bag, food, drinks, cups, plates, cooking utensils etc. There are carryout options a short drive away. The only thing you won't need is a tent, the cabin is very cozy, warm on the cold days and cool on the warm ones and there is a picnic table, lawn chairs and a gas grill with a side burner. There are a few spots around the cabin for tents if you have additional friends staying. There is an additional charge for additional guests (over 2) but please be advised: any loud "parties" or disturbances and you will be asked to leave. This is a place to enjoy nature and quiet time. To get away from it all. No extra charge for children 12 or under.
Insects are a part of the woods environment, if you're afraid of bugs this may not be the right fit for you. We rarely have any real issues, so we're reluctant to use toxic chemicals to kill most (normal) bugs. Normal bug repellent is about all that is necessary.
Why we have this cabin; It's a way to share this special place that, judging from the artifacts found here has been a camping area for thousands of years. We want to let others enjoy the seasons; the return of the migrating birds, the spring peepers in the marsh, the fall colors, the silence of a winter day in the woods and the warmth of a wood stove. (many people have found the stove to be their favorite feature) The cabin gives you a front row seat in the middle of, comparatively, pristine nature. Campers will have access to our fine trails for hiking, skiing, snowshoeing and biking. (we would allow a snowmobile from the State trail to the cabin).

Please do your best to arrive/check in before dark!
The cabin is dark; no yard lights, no streetlights, and if it isn’t a moonlit night, it IS very dark. Some of you are not used to real darkness. We provide some flashlights and headlamps (if you forgot yours) and there are LED lights in the cabin we keep charged for you.
Camping headlamps are great for cooking, using the port-a-potty and finding your way around, etc.
Bring yours or you can borrow ours, just ask.

Take safety precautions with the wood stove and learn how to use it correctly.
The only source of heat in the cabin is a small, very nice wood stove.
Those without any experience with using wood for heat are advised not to stay at the cabin during the cold season. Those that are eager to learn--we can help you, but safety is very important and you must at least have some basic skills to handle wood heat: using a propane torch, using kindling, splitting wood, operating the stove airflow.

Campfires: Campfire wood can be purchased for a reasonable price @$10 for a tote, or @$20 for a large pot/container. We do allow people to bring their own if they are coming from less that 50 miles away. Some exceptions do apply.

It has been very enjoyable meeting the many campers. Everyone has been very well prepared and it has been a pleasure seeing them have fun. We especially have enjoyed the families with young children and people with their dog(s). All have been very well behaved and very enthusiastic.

Dogs are welcome, but please let us know if your dog does not get along well with other dogs, so we can let others know. We have a young golden retriever that is very friendly and does very well with other dogs, kids and all people. If your dog doesn't get along with others (dogs or people) please let us know in advance, so we can warn others and please, for safety, keep them on a leash.

Our location is about 13 miles from the town of Viroqua, which has a wonderful Saturday morning farmer's market May-October, the renowned Driftless Cafe, and the Viroqua Food Co-op, among other things. The Organic Valley Food Co-op was established in this area in 1988, and the area in known for an abundance of fresh organic 'farm to table' food. The famous 'Driftless Books' is also found in Viroqua, along with live music on Court Street every other Saturday. Music in the Parks also offers live music in the area on Wednesdays throughout the summer.
We are 22 miles from the Kickapoo Valley Reserve, and a bit further North, from Ontario WI, one may embark by canoe or kayak, through some of the most stunning landscape to be found in Wisconsin.
This area is called The Driftless because it lacks glacial drift, which refers to the deposits of silt, gravel and rock that glaciers would have left behind had they passed through this part of Southwestern Wisconsin. The area is unique in that the land here was never flattened by the ice that came through most of the Midwest during the last glacial period/ice age. When glaciers were in surrounding areas, the melt-water sometimes made its way into the Driftless Area and contributed to the formation of the valleys and bluffs which characterize the landscape, which is known for steep hills, forested ridges, deeply carved river valleys, and karst geology with caves and spring-fed cold water trout streams. Ecologically, the Driftless Area's flora and fauna are more closely related to those of the Great Lakes region and New England than those of the broader Midwest and central Plains regions.

There is no running water in the cabin but there is a dry sink and compost toilet. A shower is just a short walk away at the main cabin with all the instant hot water that could be asked for. The property is a second farm that has been in my family's history since the 1960's. We are a working crop, horses and beef cattle farm. We raise crops on this property. We have a main farm down the road that if you would like to visit, we can try setting that up so you can see the animals if you would like.
Please note that the cabin has a porta potty outside. The cabin does not have electricity, but an extension cord can be brought and plugged into the outdoor electric outlet. The cord can be run into the cabin to use the fan, lamp and electric skillet or infrared heater in the colder months. There is a water hydrant outside for bathing or boiling. The water is non potable.
We have direct access to the property for ATV/UTV's for the public road use on the back roads. You can travel from town to town and sight see.
The property is between two towns and is close to places to see and things to do, driftless area history, wineries, caves, hiking, canoeing, fishing, sightseeing, river, streams and more.

We love coming to this amazing cabin at least once or twice per year. It is cozy and the hosts are amazing. The trails through the property are beautiful and they even offer you a golf cart to get to and from your car.

The cabin was great. The dogs enjoyed running around off leash in the woods. We also hopped on the badger state trail and walked into town. The wood stove kept us plenty warm when it was below freezing outside. It was too cold to sit on the porch but we wanted too, we will have to come back when it is warmer.
Dan is a super nice guy and made it an enjoyable experience. You can tell that he really enjoys nature and sharing it with others.

Dan built a well insulated cabin that feels much bigger than the photos. The wood burning stove kept us toasty in negative temperatures and reheated our meals. Dan provided helpful instructions and insight into the area. We spent our time exploring trails with the dogs and relaxing in the cabin. The foldout couch and 2 armchairs make a comfortable lounge area. Bring extra padding if you plan to sleep on the couch. Thank you Dan for your conservation and education, we love the natural peace and beauty.

My partner and I loved our stay at the Heart of the Driftless. The directions were clear and simple. We enjoyed the scenery and lots of amazing wildlife. What a great spot! Dan has a wonderful place. He is very responsive and provides many thoughtful touches. (One of our favorites was a hand-drawn map of the property. It made for such interesting nature walks!) The cabin is cozy and overlooks beautiful views, with a sleeping loft that feels like you’re in the trees. Amazing night sky, too. Very peaceful. We’re already looking at our calendars to book our next visit!

Dan was a great host and the place was exactly as written in the listing. Would definitely recommend, we had a nice relaxing weekend. We drove to Cave of the Mounds which was only about 30 minutes away, went apple picking and had a nice lunch in town. Nice get away!

What an amazing weekend we had at Hilltop cabin! The cabin was clean and well stocked with everything we needed. The setting was beautiful and very private. It was the perfect base camp for exploring all that the driftless area has to offer! We will definitely be back!

From the hand drawn map of the landmarks and trails to the thoughtful local recommendations, we found the cabin to be charming and the extra touches perfect. We came to enjoy a quiet weekend in nature with our dogs off-leash, and to do a little fishing. The marshy forest is gorgeous! We were here late summer, and the flora is lush and green. Lots of lovely looping trails for hiking. The cabin is perfection! Built with love and lots of insulation, we had heat and a couple of storms, but the cabin stayed cool, dry, and quiet. There are a ton of little conveniences we weren't expecting- citronella candles, lighters, can opener, TP and paper towels, first aid kit, etc. Sure, we packed all the things because this is a primitive situation, but it's nice to know if we forgot anything, likely Dan would have it there. Our top priority is that our pups get to enjoy freedom in nature, so these are the camps we seek out on hipcamp. However, we have one reactive dog, so it's also important that we get a site that has space and solitude so she can relax and enjoy without barking at every human or dog passing by. This site gives us both. Lastly, and most importantly- our host was AMAZEBALLS. Met us upon arrival and walked through all the particulars of the cabin and cart, showed us the map and brought us fire wood. He always sends a message before stopping by, and when he does stop by, the conversation is delightful. He is very knowledgeable about the history, geography, and wildlife in the area. You can tell he loves this land, and put so much of that love into building the cabin site.

Weekend Trip to Healing Hills
Highly recommend this Hipcamp, it's exactly like the photos portray – simple and comfortable. The land and scenery are really something special. Very close to Driftless Music Gardens, about 7 minute drive. On a hot August weekend, it was so nice to have access to AC/fans (and comfy beds!), making it a great alternative to tent camping at the festival. We will definitely stay again, thank you Beth and Pat!

Weekend Trip to Healing Hills
The rustic cabin was just what we needed. Quiet. Peaceful. The bed was comfy. Great place for our dog to run. It’s close to Wildcat Mountain State Park and the Kickapoo Valley Reserve. We hiked, played badminton, and roasted marshmallows. We also had a great time at the Hillsboro Brewery.

A nice quiet campground with clean facilities. We stayed at site 16, which is wheelchair accessible. The site has an asphalt path to an accessible bathroom with a shower that we were given a key to. The asphalt pad in the site was in good shape, but our BAL leveler needed to be almost fully extended. The path to the bathroom needs to be repaved.
The site was more than large enough to accommodate our Jayco 1007 pop-up and the fire ring was a safe distance away. There was also plenty of foliage to make our site feel fairly private.
The park has an asphalt path to Stephens Falls and an overlook for people who can't climb down the stone steps to the base of the waterfall.

Great campsites in a huge park! Many trails, lakes, forest and savannas to occupy you. Many electric hookups. Wisconsin requires a State Permit in addition to daily fees.

The Lost Canyon Trail is a must see. Stephens' Falls and the spring houses are great photo opportunities. The backpacking sites available in the park are secluded and very private, just remember to bring lots of insect repellent/mosquito nets.

We grew up going here every summer. Sites are more private than they used to be, although weekends in the summer are packed! Must book a year out to ensure an electric site. Stevens Falls is a beautiful hike, even with a 2&4 year old in tow! Multiple beaches, some very full of goose poop, but so many great trails to hike!

My favorite time to visit is in Mid-May when the leaves are G R E E N and the bugs are minimal. Plus the crowds are typically smaller at this extremely busy park.
