Check out Turtles bar and restaurant on the levy or The Butte bar 1 mile away. Our Breaux Bridge Crawfish Festival and Lafayette's Festival International are famous and near by. In Acadiana there are so many festivals, too many festivals to mention. Enjoy some good food like boudin, cracklings or crawfish. The best camping near Palmetto Island State Park guide

Overview

About

For an authentic Louisiana outdoors experience, check out Palmetto Island State Park. Named for the ubiquitous presence of palmetto plants which carry over into its architectural elements, the park’s location on the Vermilion River makes it a prime spot for fishing and boating. Several interior lagoons give canoers and kayakers a chance to see native plants and animals up close.

Day-use visitors will want to spend some time at the visitor center complex, which features a water playground and bathhouse. There is also a multi-purpose room that can be rented out for meetings, family reunions, weddings or even your next crawfish boil. Nearby attractions include the Acadian Museum of Erath (honoring the Cajun people of Louisiana) and Jungle Gardens (botanical gardens amongst a 900 year-old statue of Buddha).

When to go

The best time to visit Palmetto Island State Park is during the spring and fall when the weather is mild and the natural beauty is at its peak. Summer months can be hot and humid, while winter brings cooler temperatures that may affect some park activities.

Know before you go

  • Check the weather forecast before your visit to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.
  • Be aware of park hours, which are typically from 8:30am to 5pm, and plan your activities accordingly.
  • Remember to pack insect repellent, as the park's natural setting is home to various insects.
