Forty acres of woods, meadows, and fields, in the Heart of the Driftless Area, offers space to unplug, slow down, renew and rejuvenate. On a dark night, stargazing is glorious, and some summer evenings one can barely tell where the fireflies end and the stars begin. Also available here is a sound therapy studio with gongs, crystal and metal bowls, wave drum, hoop drum, chimes, and more. Group sound sessions are available most Monday evenings, or it may be possible to schedule a personal sound session during your stay. For more photos and information see our website: lifeelemental.org Our location is about 13 miles from the town of Viroqua, which has a wonderful Saturday morning farmer's market May-October, the renowned Driftless Cafe, and the Viroqua Food Co-op, among other things. The Organic Valley Food Co-op was established in this area in 1988, and the area in known for an abundance of fresh organic 'farm to table' food. The famous 'Driftless Books' is also found in Viroqua, along with live music on Court Street every other Saturday. Music in the Parks also offers live music in the area on Wednesdays throughout the summer. We are 22 miles from the Kickapoo Valley Reserve, and a bit further North, from Ontario WI, one may embark by canoe or kayak, through some of the most stunning landscape to be found in Wisconsin. This area is called The Driftless because it lacks glacial drift, which refers to the deposits of silt, gravel and rock that glaciers would have left behind had they passed through this part of Southwestern Wisconsin. The area is unique in that the land here was never flattened by the ice that came through most of the Midwest during the last glacial period/ice age. When glaciers were in surrounding areas, the melt-water sometimes made its way into the Driftless Area and contributed to the formation of the valleys and bluffs which characterize the landscape, which is known for steep hills, forested ridges, deeply carved river valleys, and karst geology with caves and spring-fed cold water trout streams. Ecologically, the Driftless Area's flora and fauna are more closely related to those of the Great Lakes region and New England than those of the broader Midwest and central Plains regions.

Welcome to The Prairie Lodge — A Rustic Retreat on Historic Land Nestled in the heart of the Driftless Region of Northeast Iowa, The Prairie Lodge sits on 200 acres of native prairie and timber as part of the Cook Heritage Farm Estate. This cherished family property has been passed down through generations for over 173 years. The property borders the scenic Turkey River and is surrounded by rolling farmland and gentle bluffs that lead toward the mighty Mississippi River. Rich in natural beauty, the Driftless Area is geologically unique—never touched by glaciers—and is known for its caves, underground streams, blind valleys, sinkholes, and cold spring-fed creeks. The Prairie Lodge, once the main “corn crib” used for drying and storing harvested corn, has been thoughtfully renovated into a comfortable and charming retreat. Inside, you’ll find a full kitchen, two bathrooms, a cozy living room, and an open loft with four queen beds. The loft comfortably sleeps eight and can accommodate up to ten guests with a blow-up mattress if needed. Step onto the east-facing patio deck with your morning beverage and watch the sunrise over fields of blooming prairie flowers. Wildlife is abundant—deer, rabbits, songbirds, pheasants, and even eagles are frequent visitors. As night falls, the second-floor deck becomes the perfect spot for stargazing and listening to the calls of coyotes echoing across the land. Next door to the Lodge, you’ll find the Bin Bar—a once-abandoned grain bin transformed in 2017 into a unique gathering space ideal for late-night storytelling and nightcaps under the stars. For those traveling with a larger group, RV campsites with full water, sewer, and electrical hookups are available near the Lodge. If additional accommodations are needed beyond the Prairie Lodge, please contact your Hipcamp host for details and availability. Activities nearby: Iowa towns including Decorah, Clermont, Elgin, Elkader, and Prairie Du Chen, Wisconsin are within driving distance. Each town boasts its own fun for day and evening entertainment including local artisan wares, antiquing, hiking, biking, golfing, water recreation, breweries, and dining spots.

Sittin Pretty Farm

7. Sittin Pretty Farm

27mi from Yellow River State Forest · 4 sites
Sittin Pretty Farm rises from the hospitality of my folks, Harry and Evelyn, of Cozy Corners Farm, where I grew up in the tall corn country of central Iowa. That country hospitality fills the big-hearted welcome we extend here. You’ll feel the storied old-farm charm of our perch on the ridge, looking west over fields and woods, and you’ll see some of the prettiest sunsets around. Come on up to the ridge and join us for Friday wood-fired pizza, live music on our outdoor Big Wheel stage, or events in the loft of our climate-controlled party barn. Our commercial kitchen and staff can cater your event, or you can rent the kitchen and showcase your own culinary talent. We have enough guest cabins to sleep up to eighteen guests. Weddings, concerts, parties, pop-up restaurants, fundraisers—rent our spaces to create your own heartfelt memories on this ridge top just 6 miles from Viroqua. Sittin Pretty is the community outreach arm of our non-profit organization, Further Along, Inc., and works in tandem with our youth adventure and service-learning program, the Merry Green Marvel. All proceeds from Sittin Pretty go to support our non-profit and other local non-profits.

There is a porta potty outside. The cabin does not have running water or electricity, but an extension cord can be brought and plugged into the outdoor electric outlet. The cord can be ran into the cabin to use the fan, lamp, infrared heater, electric water kettle, coffee pot and electric skillet. In the colder months there is an installed lp heater to use. There is a water hydrant outside for bathing or boiling. The water is non potable. We have direct access to the property for ATV/UTV's for the public road use on the back roads. You can travel from town to town and sight see. Welcome to Fern Hollow Cabin, a historic log cabin in the lush woods of Northeast Iowa. Come alone, or come with friends or family. Come sit still, or come play all day. The log house is filled with good energy from all the 167 years that people have lived here. It feels good to be connected to our past. It feels good to visit a place where the surfaces are brown, textured, and storied. And it feels good to remember that even without a phone ringing or email calling, you still know how to enjoy the passing of time. Call it your sanctuary, playground, arts space, or hermitage for a silent retreat. It's all of these, and whatever else you’d like it to be! This is my great-great-great grandparents' cabin, built in 1853. We restored it in 1989, and lived in it for 15 years. It's really beautiful! We warmly invite you to come and stay for a day or more. Come wrap yourself in the songs of the woods.
