Our home looks like an Italian villa, appropriately placed between two wineries in the middle of the Shawnee Forest.
It is actually a straw-bale home with supplemental solar energy.
Originally built as a Holistic Healing Center, we have converted it into a comfortable home with great vibes.
We have converted an old grain bin into a "GrainZebo" just outside our home as a fun place to hang out with friends and family. We hope you enjoy the same relaxed feel we get while living out here in the woods, when you come visit.

Located in a serene valley in the Ozark Highlands, the Ranch has Sheep, Scottish Highland Cattle, Chickens, Ducks and Great Pyrenees livestock guard dogs (only in the sheep pastures - and they are friendly). If you want to meet our animals and see the farm we are happy to show you around!
This is a unique site located in the Ozark Highlands. Only 45 minutes from Cape Girardeau (a small river town on the Mississippi), and 45 minutes from the Arcadia Valley including Taum Sauk mountain (the highest point in Missouri), Elephant Rocks, the Johnston Shutins, and other beautiful areas in the highlands.
The farm is five minutes from Marble Hill, which is home to the Bollinger County Natural History museum which highlights the only dinosaur bones found in Missouri. The bones were found at a farm in Glennallen (a few minutes from our farm) as well as a great barbeque (Jay’s Restaurant) and a good catfish restaurant (Jers Restaurant). On the way to our farm, feel free to stop at the 1,700 foot deep artesian well to get a cool, refreshing jug of natural artesian well water – the water is free, but you have to bring your own containers!
We are two and a half hours southwest of St. Louis, and two and half hours northwest of Memphis.

Close to Garden of the Gods (10 min), Rimrock, Pounds Hollow, Belle Smith Springs, Lusk Creek and other trails. We are in the middle of the Shawnee surrounded by trees, our own lake, you can hike around and walk the land in solitude, yet we are only 25 minutes to Harrisburg. Cabin- 2BR-1 Q, 1 K/1 bath, sleeps 4, possible 5, with the foot stool/ table that makes a small child size bed. Completely modernized, with heating/ac. Full kitchen with stove, dishwasher, microwave, refrigerator, dual flex coffee maker, pots, pans, crock pot, toaster, all utensils. Coffee, creamer, sugar, cooking oil, aluminum foil and condiments. Laundry. Outside Grill.
Large Great room, with native sandstone fireplace that is converted to gas for easy lighting. Back deck has beautiful views of the lake and hills. Enjoy the large front porch that adjoins the back deck and wraps around 3/4 of the cabin. Secluded, private. Firepit, plenty of DVD's and games, or stream your own channels with Wi-fi.
Tent and RV camping sites: Shade and sunny areas available. RV pads for self-contained campers. One Electric space available. Water available from spigot and hose. No sewer. Clean Porta-Potty on premises. No showers.
It is HIGHLY suggested that campers arrive at dusk or before sunset. The entrance to the area is not marked by lights, only a reflective triangle with the house number. The driveway is not lit, and the camp area also has no lights (better to see the stars). Contact us if arrival before nightfall is not possible and we can help guide you to the areas.

Beautiful easy access outdoor secluded camping, near the small towns of Anna-Jonesboro and Cobden, IL. Located nearby is the Blue Boar, Dixie BBQ, Brickhouse Grill, Iron Whisk, and other restaurants to enjoy. Hicks Haven is located in the heart of Southern Illinois Wine Trail. There are several award winning wineries in our area. At least a dozen wineries are as close as 5 to 30 minutes from the campsite.
Several lakes are in the area and Parks with easy and rough terrain hiking paths. We are in the middle of the Shawnee surrounded by trees, our own lake, you can hike around and walk the land in solitude, yet we are only 25 minutes to Harrisburg. The closest grocery/merchandise store is only 5 minutes away.
Cabin- 2BR-1 Q, 1 K/1 bath, sleeps 4, possible 5, with the foot stool/ table that makes a small child size bed. Completely modernized, with heating/ac. Full kitchen with stove, dishwasher, microwave, refrigerator, dual flex coffee maker, pots, pans, crock pot, toaster, all utensils. Coffee, creamer, sugar, cooking oil, aluminum foil and condiments. Laundry. Outside Grill.
Large Great room, with native sandstone fireplace that is converted to gas for easy lighting. Back deck has beautiful views of the lake and hills. Enjoy the large front porch that adjoins the back deck and wraps around 3/4 of the cabin. Secluded, private. Firepit, plenty of DVD's and games, or stream your own channels with Wi-fi.
Tent and RV camping sites: Shade and sunny areas available. RV pads for self-contained campers. One Electric space available. Water available from spigot and hose. No sewer. Clean Porta-Potty on premises. No showers.
It is HIGHLY suggested that campers arrive at dusk or before sunset. The entrance to the area is not marked by lights, only a reflective triangle with the house number. The driveway is not lit, and the camp area also has no lights (better to see the stars). Contact us if arrival before nightfall is not possible and we can help guide you to the areas.
Pets and service dogs welcome with notice. All dogs and people Must be dog friendly (owner has 5 Irish Wolfhounds). Dogs must have proof of vaccinations.
Creeks, hills, hiking trails, and private pond full of bluegill and bass. Kayaks, paddleboards, canoe and boat for your use. NO lifeguard on duty. Life preservers/jackets must be worn when around the pond. There is a beach area for swimming.

Only 15 min. from Bald Knob Cross and Makanda, IL, 30 minutes from Carbondale, IL and close by Shawnee National Forest and State Parks. Camping Spaces are mostly 30 ft x 60 ft. Spaces are marked so campers can choose from available campsites upon arrival. Campers must be self-contained. Tents are welcomed. Grass Surface with No potable water, electrical hookups, or dump services. Porta-potties are available. Feel free to enjoy the community campfire, whereas wood is provided. Bring your lawn chairs and telescopes. Along with a fishing pole to fish in the nearby pond.
Beautiful easy access outdoor secluded camping, near the small towns of Anna-Jonesboro and Cobden, IL. Located nearby is the Blue Boar, Dixie BBQ, Brickhouse Grill, Iron Whisk, and other restaurants to enjoy. Hicks Haven is located in the heart of Southern Illinois Wine Trail. There are several award winning wineries in our area. At least a dozen wineries are as close as 5 to 30 minutes from the campsite.
Several lakes are in the area and Parks with easy and rough terrain hiking paths. Just minutes away in Jonesboro is the Lincoln Memorial Picnic Grounds which is home of one of the Lincoln/Douglas Debates. There are bluffs in the Shawnee National Forest Trail of Tears and plenty of other trails and parks just a short drive away.

This place is Awesome! If you’re into camping 5 yards from the river then this is the place for you. We camped here on Easter weekend so we had the entire place to ourselves. Harless was a great host and went out of his way to make sure we were safe and comfortable. There was a 3.5” rain in the middle the night and he was right there the next morning to warn us about the river rising and made sure we were safe. We ended up hooking up and leaving for the day to have lunch and antiquing and returned after the river went down to finish out the weekend. He even offered to refund our $ for the inconvenience! That’s one thing we love about booking through Hipcamp; you meet some of the nicest people and the camps are usually superior than any State Park or Forestry campground. We will be returning to this one.

It was a great experience the first time, so we came back. The hosts are warm and welcoming, and we love hiking through the fields with our dogs. It is a little off the beaten path but worth the drive. Quiet and private. If you are driving between the Southeast and the Midwest or the Northwest, this is a great place to stop.

I can't say enough good things about Wine Trail Wilderness. Jon and Carla are excellent hosts and took excellent care of our group when we were there. The whole vibe of the place is excellent and it's obvious they care about the happiness of their guests. Everything is well thought out, from the layout and privacy of each site down to smallest detail. I highly recommend staying there. I guarantee you won't be disappointed!!!!!

The hiking club I'm a member of stayed at the Grainzebo site and we couldn't be more happy!!! Jon and Carla are simply the best. They accommodated a large group, basically catered to our needs and offered tips and suggestions on what to do and see in the area. We really enjoyed camping on the sandbar near the creek at Curt’s Cabin! My son and I went for an overnight getaway. The cabin was already being rented so we were offered that as an alternative. We visited Ste Genevieve on the way there from St Louis. The spot was quiet and really pretty and not too far off the highway. It was a bit sunny, but since we got there later in the afternoon it wasn’t too bad. There were tables and chairs and a little fire pit already there for us to use which was nice.

Jennifer & her husband were above and beyond accommodating! I booked last minute after the USFS campground I was trying to stay in was full, and so happy I stumbled upon Jennifer’s property instead. I was their first guest of the year, so I likely caught them off guard, but the property was absolutely perfect. I was looking for solitude, a bonfire, and clear view of the sky. This place was perfect; trees for hammocking, peaceful pond, perfect view of the sky (highly recommend for new moon or full moon!) And supplied firewood was an added bonus. When the weather shifted dramatically the day of my departure, Jennifer kindly offered an additional complimentary night if it meant safer travel for me the following day. I will absolutely stay here again!

My boyfriend and I travel a lot for both work and pleasure and this is definitely one of my favorite stays! This place was very peaceful. There is only dim lighting outdoors at night so the stars were amazing. Our host was very warm and welcoming as well.
The property is well kept but if you need to ask which port a potty to use, this may not be the right fit for you. You are more in nature than in the city.

I came in a warmer night in February so I had the place myself. Jon was a laid back and friendly host. His land is well maintained and the compost toilet is very clean and has a window for a view of the woods. I ordered a bottle of wine and Jon even brought me a wine glass and opener from the house to open it. I definitely would recommend and come back!
