Situated at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains and bordering the Jefferson National Forest, Thunder BRidge has scenic, large, private tent sites and cabins in the woods for those who want to experience camping at its finest. Many of the sites border Elk Creek. Our RV sites are large, flat and at the edge of the forest in a well kept open green space. Our 100 acres was originally a camp built by the Civilian Conservation Corp in the "30s and early '40s, then a boys' juvenile detention center and Big Brothers'/Big Sisters' camp, which closed in 2009. The tent sites and cabins are in the forest, away from the buildings out front, but you're free to walk around and check out the historic site. We'd like to share the camp with others and see it come back to life. All within a short driving distance are the Natural Bridge, wineries, breweries, Natural Bridge Zoo, Safari Park, Dinosaur Kingdom, Appalachian Trail, Blue Ridge Parkway, James River, historic Lexington, Devil's Marbleyard, Glenwood Horse Trail, swimming holes, etc. We have river access 2 miles up the road if you'd like to fish or put your kayak or canoe in. Truly, there is something nearby for everyone. We'd be happy to give you recommendations of things to see and do. If you are a star gazer you won't be disappointed by our dark sky.

RV Site 1

Beautiful campsite

Beautiful tranquil place for us to explore the area. Very quiet. Great grounds to walk the dogs. Shower house clean and cool rec room. Lots of history. Highly recommend :) Thanks Adam.

RV Site 3

Camping in the middle of nowhere 😄

Adam was very attentive prior to arriving by responding to text messages timely. He met us at the entrance and guided us right to our site. Very clean site, with nice open field with woods at back of complex, very quiet as if we had the campground to ourselves, highly recommended!

Site 6 (aka Woodpecker 7)

Perfect Family Camp

I loved tent camping here. It was three of us and our dog and it was wonderful. The site had everything we needed and Adam was very welcoming. We were right by the creek which was lovely and perfect for the hot weather we had while there. The bathrooms and showers are clearly well taken care of. We also walked around to see some of the other sites which were all beautiful. Some were more hidden away and far from other sites and others were more on the road. Some were bigger some were smaller and the cabins looked beautiful. Not to mention there are games near the bathhouse as well. There truly is something for everyone here especially if coming as a family!

Great weekend away!!

Had a wonderful weekend getaway. The campsite was clean and well kept and felt very private . Short walk to creek from camp. The bathroom was clean and hot water for shower was greatly appreciated! Adam was helpful and very attentive to any question or need we had. Very good host!! We will be returning!

Site 1 (aka Bunny 2)

Weekend Escape

This was one of the best Hipcamp experiences I've had. Adam has an amazing property and you can tell he takes pride in maintaining it. This was the 1st HipCamp experience for my friends and they are sold. Just far enough from the world yo be unplugged if that's your wish but close enough to wifi that staying connected is only a 1 minute walk up the road.

Site 3 (aka Butterfly 1)

Living the REAL life

The bunkhouse at butterfly site 3 was perfect. There is a bench overlooking a beautiful stream at the end of the property. Your early mornings are filled with peaceful sounds of the running water. We cooked steaks on the grill and roasted marshmallows at the firepit. The secluded area is only a 5-8 minute walk (1 min drive) to the pavillion which provides working toilets, hot showers, history, and fun activities. Thank you Adam! I WILL be back.
