Definitely recommend. We used it as a rest stop for our trip from Portland to Boise. It was a perfect pit stop. Beautiful stars. Quite and beautiful.

Great first experience here. These sites have everything you need for a beautiful and senic camping trip, propane fire pit was an amazing addition to the site. Feels very remote which is a huge bonus but also close enough to drive to some amazing hiking and swimming spots only 20 minutes away. Hope to come back soon.

Such a magical spot…we loved our stay and I’ll be back for sure! The outdoor shower, nice bathroom, propane grill, propane fire pit, table, and prep kitchen were such nice amenities. The land is gorgeous. Thank you!

Site delivered exactly on what we wanted - natural setup in the middle of the high desert with a simple but well kept setup.
Description was very accurate. Parking is adjacent to the tent areas, about 200ft between the two. Ample space to pitch a tent. No table is provided, so best to bring some working surface of your own. Propane campfire pit was easy to use.
Night sky is fantastic here - away from the city lights and with very little light pollution in the vicinity.
Good distance for exploring Bend and the surrounding areas as well!

Tent camping at the group site was peaceful and scenic. The views of the central Cascade mountains were lovely. Even though there were two other campsites they were quiet and respectful. There isn't much shade, so bringing a canopy in the summer months is worth considering. The outhouse is clean and well kept, though they had run out of toilet paper, thankfully I always have some in my camp kit.

We booked all 3 sites for a friends birthday so we had privacy. The sites are very spread out, graded and graveled, and really thoughtfully designed. There are two composting toilets, a nice little instant water heater shower and grill at the group site, and propane firepits with propane at each site. They even have little lights to illuminate the path because desert nights can get dark! We were there during a new moon so the sky was SPECTACULAR.
I will remind folks that this is an area where people live and work, so you will hear and see them on occasion, but it is FAR superior to staying in a crowded, loud, messy campground.

Clean campsites with all the extras you need. Had a beautiful time and loved the dark view of the night sky. It does get windy so make sure you have good tent stakes. 😊

This site is pretty, with great views of the sunset and the stars. My friend and I were looking for something not too rugged on our way to a very rugged trip in the desert, and this was perfect. We were the only people camping in the tent sites, so we had a lot of privacy and no neighbors. I would imagine you might hear people at the sites next to you if the tent sites are full, but the two small tent sites are separated by a composting toilet, providing privacy. It was also lovely having a propane fire pit since burn bans are in place. It was really nice being able to stay up and stay warm when it got dark and cold and the stars came out. Directions were direct and easy, and we were able to arrive and set up without any hassles. Overall a great, convenient site! I would recommend staying here and will likely return!

We loved being at Larry and Gretchen’s. We appreciated being out in the middle of nowhere. Having the composting toilet was a huge bonus.
Note that you are out on the middle of nowhere and it takes 30 -45 minutes to get anywhere but that’s what we liked about it. There were several off leash “neighborhood dogs” around so we were glad that we didn’t have ours with us.

This was such a wonderful spot! Removed from any town or major road, it truly was a desert oasis. Beautiful views and everything was perfectly clean! Cannot wait to visit again!

We had a great time staying at this group site! Hosts were super quick to respond when we had difficulty starting the fire pit. The shower was great to have and came in handy on the hot days. Lots of space for our dog to play and chase lizards.

It was clean, beautiful scenery, easy to find, and well accommodated......nice site lighting, easy fire pit, garbage, restroom set-up. Next time I'd bring a tent pad for below my tent so the rocks didn't poke it as much (just to protect my tent bottom from tears), but I loved it. I was just there to camp at night, was at the Painted Hills all day so it as nice and cool when I got back to make dinner and hang for the evening.
Already recommended it to several friends! I always have goo dluck with Hip Camp, thank you!

We will definitely be back! Great location and great amenities. Bathrooms are clean, site provides anything you could need for camp cooking. Basically all you need to bring is a tent, sleeping pad, and sleeping bag. Great views of sunsets, mountains, and stars. Our whole group had a fantastic time at this spot

This location is perfect for star gazing and getting away from it all.
Cell service is strong, if you are into that, but I spent two days alone with a telescope and soaked up some beautiful night skies.
I even saw a massive shooting star streak across the sky!
The bathroom is amazing and by far one of the best and cleanest I have experienced thus far on HipCamp!
I am staying here again.

Larry & Gretchen have done it right! Their place is the perfect glamping getaway and we will certainly be back. Great location in proximity to Bend, Smith Rocks, and the Crooked River. Had everything we needed plus a magical sunset view!

This site is a consistent favorite of ours! I’ve tent camped here three times now, and it does not fail to impress. The amenities are fantastic and the location is beautiful. It’s less than an hour into Bend but the site is secluded and the land is wide open, perfect for a getaway.

Excellent campsite in beautiful central Oregon! The sunsets and stargazing here were spectacular. Our Toyota 4Runner had no issue accessing the campsite, and the compost toilet was very easy to use. We brought a wagon to help transport our supplies from the car to the campsite and were glad we did. The propane fire pit was a lovely touch. Would stay here again!

Tent camping here was lovely overall. The views were beautiful-- sunrises, sunsets and stargazing was unrivaled. The composting restroom was convenient and very clean. There is a path from the parking area to the site, while it Is not particularly long, a rolling cart would have been helpful for setup. I would return again with a cart and some sort of canopy for shade in the summer months.

I was looking for a place to camp with dark skies and unobstructed views. I was not dissapointed.
The compost toilet was clean, no odor. I didn't make use of the shower, but that's a nice touch if you've spent the day exploring.
I stored my food trash in my car, but still had some field mice trying to rummage through some gear I left outside of my tent.

The group had beautiful views of the sunset and sunrise! The site had plenty of room for 3 tents, including one large tent. The grounds were beautiful and it was convenient to be so close to Bend. :)
