Hi there. Here is a little rundown of everything we do at the mill…. So, as far as camping, there are two main options on either side of the river; the mill yard or primitive camping across the river. In the mill yard, we do festival style camping, meaning that there are no individual campsites per se, but rather a large grassy lawn near the mill and bathhouse with shared fire pits, picnic tables, charcoal grill, and sinks for water/dishes. We also have two platforms up in the woods that are good for a little more privacy and are completely shaded, but do require a small climb up the hill. The bathhouse has three restrooms and hot showers in each. Across the river, there are several more primitive sites that are generally very private and offer great sounds coming from the river and waterfall, but no facilities. Most sites are car accessible, and a 5 minute walk back over to the mill (or a 1 minute drive). Lastly, our newest camping spot on the primitive side is a river front beach right by the dam with space for a several medium sized tents and a private fire pit. The beach is hike-in only (2-3 minutes along a mostly flat trail). Our normal rate is $10 per person per night. Firewood is available for per wheelbarrow load. We accept cash, credit card, Venmo, Paypal, and crypto. We are also fairly flexible on check in/check out times, but just let us know if you’ll be arriving at odd hours. Dogs are generally welcome as long as they are kept on leash. Here is a little rundown of tubing at the mill (May-October, weather permitting). We have two tubing options available. We have a short Fun Run that takes roughly 45 minutes, and cost $10 per person for as many rides as you’d like. The river bends sharply like a horseshoe in this section, so it makes everything accessible by foot traffic. It’s a 3 minute walk up the trail to the dam, put in and float 30-45 minutes (depending on water level), then a 5-10 minute walk back to the mill carrying your tube. There is also the longer Forks Run, which last 3-4 hours (~2.5 river miles), and costs $15. For this, we shuttle you up the river in a vehicle, and you float back to the top of the dam, then 3 minutes walking back to the mill. Most weekends, tubing starts at 11 am and the last Forks Shuttle is around 3 pm, with the Fun Run staying open till around 5. Also, with enough heads up, we can sometimes arrange for trips during the week. Our tubes are required for each person floating for insurance and liability reasons, but you are welcome to bring your own cooler tubes to carry drinks and snacks. Technically, alcohol is not permitted on the river, but what is in your cooler is your business. Either way, please bring ALL trash out with you! Water shoes are recommended, and we have life jackets on request. Most of our tubes come with bottoms and back rests, but a few are open to the water. Most weekends, reservations are not required, but it does help tremendously if we know when you want to come and how many in your group. Lastly, check out a Facebook page for our occasional live music events and festivals!

Dam Near Beach (Fittanto Cove)

100%

Tent site · Sleeps 8
Fittanto Cove is a riverfront beach just below the historic dam. Space for several medium sized tents, or a couple larger tents. Fairly sunny site except in the mornings and evenings, easy access to the river, private fire pit, and the soothing sound of the river falling over the dam. Hike-in only (2 minutes from parking). (As of this writing in 10/26, the beach has changed slightly compared to older photos because of major flooding on the river over the summer. Some areas got larger with more sand, but the area around the fire pit had the sand stripped away. A large driftwood debris pile is just down the trail from the beach)

River Camp

Tent site · Sleeps 4
Our newest primitive site, River Camp sits just feet above the Dan River and is mostly shaded during the day. The trail along the river is a short walk up to the old dam, a great spot to swim, fish, or just hang out. (As of this writing in 10/26, there may still be nearby debris from major flooding on the river during the summer, but the site did pick up a nice layer of sand).

Falls camp is on the primitive side of the river from the mill and bathhouse, and offers the best privacy, full shade, and ambient river sounds. There are several flat camping pads at the edge of the forest for tents, hammocks, or small campers, and a large private fire pit just below. The river and dam can be reached on foot down a nearby trail. This site is car accessible and a one minute drive (or 5 minute walk) back over to the mill.

  • Review summary

    Generated from real Hipcamper reviews

Jessup's Mill offers a charming blend of natural beauty and rustic amenities. Campers frequently mention the soothing sounds of the river and the convenience of clean bathhouses. While the majority of reviews are positive, highlighting the scenic setting and friendly host, a few note areas could use maintenance, like overgrown spaces and the presence of poison ivy. Overall, it's a welcoming spot for those looking to enjoy the outdoors with some creature comforts.

Tent camped at Falls Camp with pets, Oct 2026.

    It was okay

We stayed at Falls Camp for our trip and enjoyed it for the most part. The field was large, there was space for 3 tents along the edge of the woods, a fire pit area in the woods and the waterfall was so nice to hear going to sleep. The walk down to the river was really steep and not really doable. We chose to drive to the bathhouse each time because the walk required being on the side of the road for a little bit. The 2 bathrooms were nice to have access to, however. We did wish it was kept up a bit more. There was a lot of poison ivy all around and the site was a bit overgrown. The space around the fire pit at falls camp would be a lot more usable with some trimming to provide a bit more common area space and get rid of the poison ivy.

Woods Camp was comfortable, well shaded, and only a few minutes' walk from the bathhouse, which was nice and very clean. The host, Matthew, was personable, responsive, and informative. Looking forward to my next stay.
