The Timbarra or Rocky River is an area of great beauty southeast of Tenterfield with soaring mountains cradling the river flats and undulating hills below and is a renowned cattle breeding region. The Petrie family have been in Tenterfield since 1860 and have owned properties in the valley for over 100 years. Tim’s great-grandfather was known as Rocky Jack because of his extensive holdings. Cattle are still walked up to the Timbarra Plateau property from the river properties ‘Man From Snowy River’ style. The Plateau can be seen rising above the valley to the north from the confluence of Demon Creek and the Timbarra/Rocky River. These flow along the Demon Fault which is clearly visible on a satellite map. The 3 valley properties ‘Corner Camp’, ‘Boundary’ and ‘’Pavels’ combined with ‘Timbarra Plateau’ total over 25000 acres. The whole valley was part of 2 earlier large selections averaging 100000 acres which gradually became broken up in the late 1800s/early 1990s. There is a proud timber history in the valley and the surrounding forested mountains with large sections of State Forest now transferred to Washpool National Park which abuts both the eastern and western boundaries of ‘Boundary’ (which takes its name from Boundary Creek). The National Park and Forestland State Forest can be accessed to the west via the Billirimba Fire Trail. The eastern section of Washpool stretches across to the Clarence River, the largest eastern river in NSW. Washpool is where the Cedar King went missing and was never located. The Timbarra/Rocky River flows into the Clarence at Tabulam and then on to Grafton and out to sea at Yamba. The headwaters of the Rocky are all the way south to the Glen Innes Grafton road so the river can rise quickly if there is a downpour upstream. Interestingly when the Chinese gold miners left the Timbarra Plateau they came down with rickshaws into the Timbarra Valley then scaled the mountains to the west, near Boundary Creek, looking for their next gold diggings towards Glen Innes. The Boundary campsites at Boundary Riverside, The Cockatoo, The China Wall, and the Caves are all suitable for caravans, RVs, Camping trailers, tents and swags as is Timbarra Plateau. Corner Camp and Pavels are suitable for camping trailers, tents and swags. Boundary campsites access are all unaffected if the river rises however we will not take bookings at Corner Camp or Pavels in the likelihood of the river rising as we are committed to safety and avoiding inconvenience for guests. The Rocky is a very special place and we have campers who first came as children and are now bringing their grandchildren. We expect our guests to treat the area respectfully, and only leave footprints and tyre tracks. The valley provides wonderful scenery and settings for bushwalking, birdwatching, photography, painting, bicycle riding, swimming, kayaking, paddle boarding and canoeing, or just kicking back relaxing by the river, listening to the soothing sounds of the water, birds, and the turtles and platypus splashing, or being amazed at the mirror like images on the waters surface on a still day or the flickering light of a campfire at night and the stars above.

The China Wall

Great communication and directions. Bill was there to meet us and clear camp site signage. We stayed at "China Wall" camp site, lovely seculed grassed area and beautiful scenery. Private, refreshing swim in the river along with a spot of fishing (catch and release for us). The grazing cattle and horses added to the peaceful country ambiance. Bill was prompt to deliver firewood and it was nice to have a chat about the property. Satelite spotting in the night sky was second to none.

This is my new favourite spot

If you want privacy, space, beautiful night sky, no reception so a good disconnect from the world, an amazing swimming hole and the cleanest smell free drop toilets, then this place is without a doubt the best place I have camped. You feel privileged to be able to have access to this great spot in the world. The owners were super lovely also. 2wd accessible in my opinion- however if it's rather wet conditions it could be slippery getting your vehicles off the bottom half of the campsite as it's grassy and there's a small hill to drive up. Also if your car is low clearance, the road was rain damaged so there's about 40 mins of windy rutts and pot holes. Not an issue in a vehicles that's not super low however. All in all for my experience- I give this place an 11 out of 10- amazing

Murphy’s Hut Campsite

Lucky for second option

The description of the campsite is exactly what you get. You’re camping at the back of an old house. You have a view of the creek about 100m below but with no access. It’s okay for an overnight stay. We were lucky as we required extra nights prior and was given another option across the creek which was just perfect. All of the other campsites were perfect also. Bill & Bronwyn were great hosts.

👌 wow, What a wonderful spot, private, shady, perfect fishing spot. We had the best time chilling out at Riverside would return in a heartbeat. Just what we needed to disconnect, great toilet with a view. The hosts set us up to relax with ample firewood for 4 days and checked on us during our stay which was very nice, awesome hosts with a slice of Mother nature's heaven 😀

Such an amazing spot! Camped here with friends over new years, was so peaceful and private. Heaps of room and a short stroll down to the lovely river. Hosts were amazing and accomodating. Highly recommend this beautiful place.

Book it!

One of the best camp spots I’ve been too! The road in coming from the town of Drake is beautiful, it follows the river the whole way and is just a spectacular drive. The road in from Tenterfield is faster and not as rough. The camp spot itself is secluded, grassy and quite, cattle and horses hang around too! Plenty of fire wood and the river is epic. Definitely worth the drive 👌🏻

What an awesome spot, we camped at The Caves. Immaculate drop toilets, the valley is something else, the weather changes through the day and stars at night made for a great few days. Towed a hybrid off road van in from Tenterfield, took about 70 minutes. Thank you for responding so quickly when our situation changed

Great Spot

Beautiful spot down by the river, easy river access & good swimming hole. The toilet was a nice touch, clean & well equipped with toilet paper, hand sanitiser & other supplies. A huge stack of firewood was provided free of charge on arrival. Bill was a great host & couldn't have been more helpful, came down and checked everything was ok & we still had enough firewood etc. Highly recommend it, we are already planning our next visit. Hopefully word doesn't get out too much :)

Beautiful part of the world, Bronwyn went out of her way to meet us on the road near Tenterfield just to say g'day and make sure we had firewood. Great toilet facilities too. Make sure to allow extra time for the long dirt road in, some parts were eroded and shouldn't be taken at speed.

Perfect solitude

This was one of the most secluded, beautiful spots I’ve ever found through Hipcamp. Plenty to explore and a peaceful place to relax. I’ve started looking at properties in the area since I’ve returned. Couldn’t recommend it more, but almost don’t want to do that it stays uncrossed.
