C Colo - just beautiful

7 sites · RVs, Tents10 acres · Colo, NSW
Our property contains the first road in and out of Colo - the original road is supported by hand built dry rock walls some of which are over 3 m high. Often referred to as convict built, but more likely built by freemen who were former convicts. The property housed the load master's residence who controlled the cargo boats that docked to collect the valley’s produce. This was then transported back down the Colo River which flows into the Hawkesbury river and leads to Broken Bay following the coastline down to Old Sydney Town. The beach diagonally across the river was landed upon by members of the First Fleet’s exploratory scouting party on the lookout for quality farm land - some of which is still in production today. Our property is on the uppermost reach of freshwater but with tidal influence. This deep water allows swimming and canoeing all year round. Our property is adjacent to the only council built canoe launching facilities on the Colo River.

Down by the Hawkesbury

1 site · RV, Tent2 acres · Pitt Town Bottoms, NSW
Originally settled in 1889 "Bobs Grant" this lovely property and the surrounding land was originally used for farming but is now mostly turf farms. Enjoy our little getaway down by the Hawkesbury River only 10 minutes from historic Windsor. A beautiful river shack for your use exclusively, including fire pit with direct access to the Hawkesbury river. Destroyed in the March and July 2022 floods, we have now re-built and are looking forward to welcoming back our guests. Bring your caravans, tent or swag - all are welcome! Unfortunately, boats are not. Relax and enjoy the serenity whilst being only 1 hour from Sydney. We offer the site to one group only, a maximum of 20 guests. However note, we are not a place for rowdy groups and parties. Groups are welcome here to enjoy the time with their family and friends, play a little music and relax by the river. The river can get busy (which is great after the floods as it has been dead for so long) and so can the road across the river but if you are enjoying your family and friends you won't even notice! We have one basic toilet, and one river water shower available too! Please bring your own drinking water. Fires are only permitted when allowed, in the designated areas only.

The best camping near Cattai National Park guide

Overview

About

Popular with day-trippers and campers alike, this family-friendly riverside park on the fringes of Sydney makes an easy escape from the city for a few hours or an entire weekend. Wildlife watchers should keep an eye out for kangaroos and birds, while history buffs can explore the colonial history of New South Wales at the Cattai Homestead, built by First Fleet settlers in the 1820s. The calm currents of the Hawkesbury River invite a leisurely kayak or canoe paddle, while shelters and grassy lawns make it the perfect picnic spot. Campers can stay overnight at the park’s only campground, Cattai Campground.

Tips for snagging a campsite

  1. Reservations are required for overnight camping.
  2. Book well in advance for Easter weekend and summer holidays. If you’re keen on a barbecue, areas with picnic shelters and grills can also be booked in advance.

When to go

Summer is prime time for boating and other water sport adventures, while spring and fall are ideal for bushwalking and cycling along park trails. Picnicking is popular year-round. The campground is locked overnight, but campers receive a gate code for emergency use.

Know before you go

  • Park entry fees are required in addition to camping fees.
  • Pack in all your own food and drinking water, as none is available on site.
  • Facilities include generally well maintained toilets and hot showers.
  • While the Hawkesbury River is great for water sports, boat traffic and soil levels mean it’s not ideal for swimming.
