Cell reception in the area is decent. I had access to TMobile data from the property the last time I was there though not all areas of the park have the same luxury. City folk (like it seems I have sadly become these days) often forget what a beautiful starry night sky can look like. One clear night here and you'll see a sky full of stars, the milky way, planets and maybe a shooting star. As a International Dark Sky Park, the parks nightscape falls on the Bortel scale of 3 (1 being darkest and 9 being brightest). For more info go to www.nps.gov/pefo/learn/nature/darkskies Outside of the Petrified Forest National Park in Holbrook, we recommend visiting Jim Gray's Petrified Wood Co. and the Navajo County Historical Society Museum. Nearest gas can be found at the Painted Desert Visitor Center or west down I-40 toward Holbrook at the Hopi Travel Plaza. In Holbrook, groceries can be found at Safeway and local restaurants include Camaleon Cafe, Butterfield Stage Co. Steak House and Mandarin Beauty and host of other Mexican and American restaurants. Trucks do come down Adamana Rd to the storage facility during the week though you probably won't hear or see them much. The train can be a bit loud and obnoxious for some (or a something exciting for the kids) depending on how frequently it passes through so ear plugs at night may be advised. The view of the stars at night was incredible! The road was definitely rough getting out there but it was dry when we went and I made it fine in my Escape with no 4WD so it was do-able. The site is isolated (some highway noise but it is distant so makes for great white noise) and well-maintained with some really great amenities: horseshoes, cornhole, a little putt putt green, fire blanket, roasting sticks for hot dogs/s'mores, plus an outdoor shower setup and compost toilet. We had an excellent time and plan on staying again next time we are in the area!!!

Dope primitive camping and spot easy access with an suv or bigger. You can literally see petrified forest from the campsite he’s not lying— front row seats. The train being close was annoying but earplugs I think would make it fine. Read all the description and rules etc and you’ll be just fine. Brett gave great directions and was very responsive. Beautiful wide open space. We were the only campers there. The horseshoes and corn hole setup was another plus. We did get a little turned around trying to find the place, but the clear campground signage helped. Extra tarps for wind proofing are recommended if there are any winds, but otherwise a great place to camp. We would love to camp here again.

Incredible place to make camp for the night and wake up. A little bit off of the main highway, but Ken gives great accessible directions if you are coming after sun set. Campsite is perfect and making dinner over the great fire pit was very easy. The little set up he has is perfect. Great to wake up and have short ride to the petrified forest. The name Homolovi is Hopi for “Place of the Little Hills” and they weren’t kidding. Homolovi State Park is a historic and special place for the Hopi Indians. Travel back in time through the guided tours of the “little hills” including ancient pottery and artifacts of the Hopi people. Don’t miss the Saturday programs scheduled from pottery talks to wood walks. Stay till dark for the Star Party they host annually! This place is more than just a fun time: it’s sacred grounds of a civilization that has loved the land fully. As long as you treat it with respect, you’re on your way to an unforgettable experience.

When to go

The ideal time to visit Homolovi State Park is during the spring and fall when temperatures are mild and the park's beauty is at its peak. Summer months can be extremely hot, making daytime activities challenging. Winter offers cooler days, but be prepared for cold nights. Always check weather conditions before your trip.

Know before you go

Check the park's official website for any alerts on closures or safety advisories before planning your visit.
Bring plenty of water and sun protection, as the desert climate can be harsh, especially during summer.

It’s in the perfect pit stop if you’re traveling east or westbound through Arizona. We came in late December on a full moon night, it was freezing cold, and the campground was empty and had an eerie beauty to it. I imagine that when it’s warmer it’s hard to find enough shade, but waking up to a frosty morning alone in the desert here was quite special. The facilities were great with the warmest bathroom we’ve come across, but you had to track to the campground entrance to find drinking water.
