Bring a friend and rent this site in conjunction with some of our other sites or split up your camping trip with a night in our backcountry camp site. Located in the rolling Appalachian hills of Southeast Ohio. This farm has been in our family since 1869 when our relatives settled here from Germany. Originally farmed for cattle and sheep with many orchards over the years our property is now mostly mature forest. Southeast Ohio, including our property is known for its hilly topography and microclimates. Hills range from 400 to 1,100 feet.
Nearly 500 acres of land with an additional 200+ acres of Wayne National Forest adjacent to our farm and close proximity to other Wayne areas for outdoor activities. We have nearly 10 miles of available trails for hiking. Many activities can be done at or centered around our property. Such as excellent and challenging road biking, mountain biking, horseback riding, hiking, fishing, kayaking and boating. We are two miles from the Little Muskingum River. A great river for kayak trips. The Wayne Kinderhook horse and hiking trail is roughly 5 miles from our location. Hike to the Irish Run Natural Land bridge trail also a short drive to the trailhead from our property. Ride your motorcycle up Rt. 26 a great Ohio byway for scenic driving. This is also a great home base for dual sport or adventure bike motorcycle riders to camp while adventuring along gravel roads through Appalachia. If motorcycles aren't your method of entertainment and travel. Bring your horse and ride on several of our trails.
From steep ascents to long flat ridge lines, you will have lots of time to immerse yourself with nature while hiking. We're next to a section of the Wayne National Forest and a short drive to other similar Wayne activity sites. If you like to camp, but don't want the busy public park experience then you will enjoy the privacy of our camping location.
We are also only about a 20-minute drive to downtown Marietta. Where you can find restaurants, bars, and many other fun activities.

Dogwood Cabin is an off grid experience. Think glamping. It is set on 25 acres in the rolling hills of Morgan County in southeast OH, close to the village of Chesterhill. Hidden in the woods, back a gravel driveway. No electricity, no running water, no central heat, no WiFi, no cell service. Truly getting out into nature without distractions.
Hang your hammock between trees. Build a fire to grill your meals. Relax on the porch swing or by the fire. Hike the property, play in the creek.
Dogwood Cabin has a small kitchenette. There is a propane camping stove and some pots, pans, coffee maker, and dishes. We have a grill to place over the fire pit.
There are 4 mattresses in the loft. No linens. Bring sleeping bags, etc.
No running water. Bring water in jugs for drinking, cleaning up and dousing the fire.
Buddy propane heater to take off the chill inside, but not make it cozy.
Bring a flashlight or lantern. We have several battery lanterns. On low, the lights should work for 6-8 hours. On high, much less.
An outhouse (think wooden porta potty) is not far from the cabin.
No cell service or internet. Chesterhill is about 2 miles and has service in numerous places on Main St. We have gone up the hill at the church in Todds - right on Goshen Run, left on St Rt 377, about 2 miles.
Firewood is not provided. You can bring your own or scrounge the woods for dead branches and twigs. Please douse the fire before leaving. Rake leaves away from the fire pit. Dry materials could easily start a forest fire.
8 plastic deck chairs are stacked on the porch. Please put them back and secure the cover before you leave.
We encourage you to get groceries on your way to the cabin, since it is 30 minutes to a decent grocery store. Chesterhill has Ron's Convenience and Restaurant where you can buy subs, pizza, burgers, fries, and groceries. Triple Nickel Diner in Chesterhill is another neat place to eat.
No motorcycles on the driveway.
You may enjoy hiking the 25 acres on the property. Nature is awesome, but check yourselves and your pet for ticks.

Welcome to our charming sheep farm retreat! As proud owners and stewards of this picturesque farm, we want to offer you a unique experience like no other. Relax in the backyard in comfy Adirondack chairs around a Crystal Fire table. You can also observe wildlife from our house's windows and deck. We're conveniently located 2 miles from the Elk River Trail, ideal for biking, hiking, horseback riding, and kayaking. We are 35 minutes from the Rail Explorers in Clay.
The space:
House is situated on the edge of a sheep farm in the woodlands of the Appalachain Mountains of West Virginia. 2 bedrooms are located upstairs. One bedroom has 2 twin beds and the other one has a queen size bed with a full bathroom in the hallway. The first level of the house has a kitchen, spacious dining area, living room, laundry room, a bedroom with a queen size bed that has a full bathroom adjacent to it just across the hall. All bedrooms have a 43" roku tv. No Smoking.
We provide Starlink internet and Roku tv.
Log into your own streaming services or take advantage of our complimentary Disney + and Paramount + subscriptions and the free channels that Roku has to offer.
Guest access:
All rooms of the house are accessible except for garages, enclosed porch, and storage closet.

J was very hospitable and the space was perfect for a weekend away with my husband. We camped here in January, so it was pretty cold outside but so cozy with the wood burning stove inside the cabin. There are lots of trails to explore the property and are easily accessible from the cabin. The hills are steep though, but worth the climb!

Weekend Trip to Appalachian Retreat Camp
Wife and I had all we needed at the Nature Camper. Camper has water, hot water, stove, oven, fridge, microwave, and a Solo Firepit on the private deck. Lots of charm inside, more like a tiny house with completely new appliances and birch walls. Best of all you are on 500 private acres.
We hiked part of the 10 miles of trails in total privacy. Site also has huge grassy tent area you can expand into with large fire-pit - comes with the camper so no neighbors.
Owner’s family goes back to the original log cabin, that is still there off one of the trails. Owner has made his own private preserve, He was interesting, respectful and responsive. Camper pdf had all the details you need.
Easy drive to Marietta Ohio River historic areas, shopping, dining, activities, and Wayne NF trails. No cell or WiFi but it comes in as you drive down the road. Unplug and enjoy!

I wish we’d had more time to explore the Appalachian Retreat. It was a lovely and lush piece of land and the little a-frame was very cute and comfortable. I appreciated all of the cool design features of the cabins and outhouse. We only arrived late at night, slept well and had to head out in the morning.

Really cute A-Frame with everything you need to enjoy a time away. The property has many trails to explore and plenty to see without ever getting in your car. The cabin was comfortable and equipped with many nice add ons, aside from the occasional expected creepy crawler. Nice small generator that kept all of our devices charged, and a nice bathroom and comfy bed. Definitely recommend!

This is a really well thought out little off grid cabin. Clean and cozy, and the stove and lamps they leave for you are really nice. At night we slept in the loft with the window open and listened to the owls all night. We will be back!

3 nights at Appalachian Retreat Camp
My brother and I rented the A- and R-frame cabins and stayed three nights. What an amazing camp! Calm and serene, brimming with wildlife (butterflies, birds including woodpeckers, hawks, and owls, deer, possum, and more). Great, well stocked firepit. The A- frame is definitely more rustic than the R-, so if you want to feel more connected to nature, the A-frame is for you. The hosts were communicative and friendly and they've clearly put a lot of thought into their camp. Lots to do in the area if you're into fishing (we caught a 15" bass at the Devola dam) or hiking. The creek was dry when we went, so we got our water from the house nearby. Both my brother and I would definitely want to go back, maybe at a time when the creek would more likely be running since it runs right by the cabins and would be incredibly relaxing to listen to. My brother at the end of the trip, "I give that camp ten out of five stars." :)

Dogwood cabin was delightful and remote. My two dogs and I loved the surrounding countryside. At night, it was so cozy! I would highly recommend, however, a few observations:
Watch your head on the steps!
It is dark inside, even mid-day. You will need a light source if cooking or cleaning or to see into the cupboards. I brought several camp lights that charge via USB anf a power pack. They were almost essential.
There were no matches or lighters. I had to make a trip to Stockport.
The camp stove is useful, but the directions on the lid are outdated - there is no longer a pump to prime. It is also not really adjustable. My morning water for coffee took almost an hour to heat up enough for my French press. It's a really nice feature but you might prefer your own.
The only working solar light was on the outhouse. The others didn't light up.
There was no firewood at all. Check in time was 4pm; by the time I got unloaded and settled in, it was too dark in the woods to scrounge for firewood.
The creek is down at the bottom of the very narrow and steep road. My dogs loved it! Best access is down by the entrance gate.
There was quite a bit of activity on Goshen Run Rd. Use caution if walking it. It winds quite a bit and speed limit is 55.
It was super hot, muggy, and buggy, so we didn't do as much outside exploring as I would have liked, but overall Dogwood Cabin was a sweet little abode in the woods on a hilltop.

1 night at Appalachian Retreat Camp
My Lovely companion and I were touring the area on motorcycles. This gem was perfectly, centrally located for our excursions. The weather was exceedingly hot when we arrived and started down the shaded pathway into the cool glen. This place is dripping with charm and teaming with all sorts of wildlife! It’s very well provisioned and equally romantic. Very private.
We were unable to meet in person with “J” unfortunately, given our itinerary, but our host was still completely available and accommodating via text.
We are already planning another trip to the area with every intent to stay here again but with a small group.

Weekend Trip to Appalachian Retreat Camp
We stayed at J.’s “Cabin in the Woods” and it was awesome! It’s nestled deep among the trees and really makes you feel like you’re in the woods. It’s so tucked away that it’s hard to see from the lower cabin so make sure you read those instructions carefully! The cabin itself was very clean and comfy! There was a ton of handy extras inside like a lantern, a camping chair, a lighter, a hammock, and even some bug spray! The porch had a nice spot for setting up our camp stove and the area around the solo stove was great for sitting around the fire and hanging out for the evening. J was super helpful and responsive! Can’t recommend it enough if you’re looking for a super isolated stay in the woods! Oh and the bugs weren’t too bad and it rained pretty hard most of the night and we stayed nice and dry in the cabin. Oh and there were two overhead LED bulbs that let us stay up chatting even when the rain drove us inside.
Can’t recommend it enough!

This is an incredible spot. Full of meaning and history. J and his family steward their land in the most wonderful way - it’s an incredible contribution to the community and the region. The cabin itself is perfect, hidden, and very private. Everything you could and (and more) for a tent alternative.

Weekend Trip to Appalachian Retreat Camp
My partner is writing this review on my behalf since she has stayed at this cabin before and can compare trips:
I was so excited to be able to come back and spend some more time in this cabin to see what a cold weather stay would be like, and it did not disappoint. In spite of the fact that the temperatures dropped to a chill factor of about 20, my partner and I stayed warm and cozy inside on account of the wood stove. It’s a small one, and if you start with a cold cabin it will take about an hour or two to reach a comfortable room temperature, but after that we only needed to feed it once in a while to keep the fire going. It burned all the way down overnight while we slept, but the cabin was still a little warm inside when we woke up the next morning.
These are close quarters and perfect for a romantic getaway for two. Other than the small birds visiting the feeders, the area was extremely quiet and peaceful. We didn’t hear a soul. It was cold enough that we didn’t get a chance to walk about the property, but we were in the mood to stay cuddled up inside anyway. Just FYI, the composting toilet doesn’t work at these temperatures, so you have to improvise …we kept a bucket inside for #1 during the night.

2 nights at Appalachian Retreat Camp
If you’re looking for a spot to camp that is completely private and peaceful, this is your spot! The cabin itself is cozy and the compostable toilet is very easy to use. There are many amenities provided for cooking, both for cooking over the fire or on a propane stove. There is even firewood provided, but we brought some of our own to supplement as well so we wouldn’t exhaust J’s supply! When we arrived, J offered to help us take our wood and supplies to the cabin with his UTV, but he does also provide a wagon you can use if he isn’t there. The cabin is a short walk from where you park. I’m not sure how large the property is, but my partner and I went on a 2 hour hike on the trails that J mentioned and I’m sure we only saw a fraction of what was out there. I would say the trails are not for beginner hikers, as there are frequent inclines and declines. We did rent both cabins so we would have the space to ourselves, but the second, smaller cabin is somewhat tucked away up on a hill. We could only just see the top of it peeking through the trees. The foliage was beautiful out there, definitely worth a visit! We will absolutely camp here again!
