Rusty Ranch Tree Farm offers 110 acres of meadows and forest. Our location provides easy access to much of our local recreation options and is only 10 min east of Bellingham. The camp area is spacious and can easily accommodate your family and even a couple of friends. Scattered trees offer shade, and large grassy areas provide ample space to roam.
Rusty Ranch Tree Farm is dedicated to "Eduction through Exploration" where we strive to provide your family and friends with more than just camping but also a place to experience nature and learn about forestry, farming and making maple syrup from trees right here on our farm..
Hike the several miles of nature trails on the hillside and explore our 65 acres of certified forest. Placards on the nature trail are part of our self-guided tour and provide information about forestry and the plants and animals that call this their home. Wander through the old growth groves, walk the 50' boardwalk and see the magical Fern Ridge. There are abundant wildflowers and seasonal berries to pick, as well as a variety of fall apples and pears in the old orchard available for self harvest. You can even purchase a tree to take home and plant.
Other farm experiences include a guided interactive nature tour for your group, a class on making maple syrup, or experience farm life and "hang with the hens." We also offer the opportunity to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables brought to your site. Don't forget to stop by the Snack Shack for fresh cinnamon rolls, ice cream bars, snacks, drinks, apparel and locally made gifts.

Our 10-acre property is located in Custer, WA in the Northwest corner of Whatcom County. Custer is an easy 20-minute drive to Bellingham, 10-15 minutes to 2 coastal beaches (Birch Bay and Semiahmoo), and only 10 minutes to Blaine and the Canadian border.
We love to host our friends and show people around our beautiful slice of the PNW🌲
We are a big family, so we designed all of our glamping sites to be kid and pet friendly and big enough to fit families of 2-6. A little luxury and ease for the grownups and a magical nature experience for the kids. Kids are allowed to "just be" here. Cellular reception isn't great but no one seems to notice. Not when they are busy building forts, roasting marshmallows and climbing up tree houses.
The intention infused into all of our spaces is a Hygge* (pronounced hoo-gah) vibe. *Hygge is a calm, comfortable time with people you love. The absence of frustrations; often enjoyed with warm drinks, cozy blankets and candlelight or a fire.❤️
County Noise Statement: We love living in rural Whatcom County and we know land owners in our area love it too. In fact, their enthusiasm for the great outdoors is so high that sometimes they can generate sounds that will travel throughout the day. These are likely sounds you are not accustomed to hearing in a traditional neighborhood.

If the potential for noise and the nearby shooting range will be a damper on your glamping experience, no worries! We totally get it! Our place is probably not the best fit. If you want to bring your kids to a place where they can build a fort, take a break from their screens and build family memories over a campfire, then you will love it here! And we look forward to seeing you soon.

A little luxury and ease for the grownups and a magical nature experience for the kids. Kids are allowed to "just be" here. Cellular reception isn't great but no one seems to notice. Not when they are busy building forts, roasting marshmallows and climbing up tree houses.
The intention infused into all of our spaces is a Hygge* (pronounced hoo-gah) vibe. *Hygge is a calm, comfortable time with people you love. The absence of frustrations; often enjoyed with warm drinks, cozy blankets and candlelight or a fire.❤️
County Noise Statement: We love living in rural Whatcom County and we know land owners in our area love it too. In fact, their enthusiasm for the great outdoors is so high that sometimes they can generate sounds that will travel throughout the day. These are likely sounds you are not accustomed to hearing in a traditional neighborhood.

Evenings are generally very quiet and peaceful as night falls with the exception of holiday weekends as the enthusiasm for owning property in the country may ramp up ;) We tell you all this in order to be fully transparent about noise potential. If the potential for noise and the nearby shooting range will be a damper on your glamping experience, no worries! We totally get it! Our place is probably not the best fit. If you want to bring your kids to a place where they can build a fort, take a break from their screens and build family memories over a campfire, then you will love it here! 2 nights at North Wind House: Historic Cascadia
I stayed in the Willow Cabin for two nights over the Thanksgiving holiday, and it was exactly the peaceful reset I was hoping for. I arrived after 9pm, and even in the dark, the property felt welcoming with its whimsical lighting guiding the way. Reg, the host, was there to greet me and walk me through everything — from the cozy cabin setup to the full outhouse bathroom and the little kitchen area with a fridge for essentials.
The cabin itself is simple and calming, with a twin and a queen bed, both with fresh linens. Reg had the space heater going before I arrived, which was such a thoughtful touch. Since I stayed during the colder season, I was grateful I brought a heated blanket, and I’d recommend others do the same that time of year.
The water straight from the tap was incredibly fresh and delicious, truly something you don’t get in the city — just a small detail that made the stay feel even more special.
What really stood out to me was the beauty and quiet of the property. Reg genuinely encourages guests to wander and explore, and it made the whole stay feel more personal and grounding. It’s the perfect spot for anyone wanting to unplug, reflect, and enjoy a truly low-amenity, chill cabin experience.
And I have to mention this — the shower water pressure and heat were amazing. Truly a highlight!
If you know you enjoy a simple, peaceful, back-to-basics kind of stay, Willow Cabin is such a gem. I’d absolutely return.

Reg’s hundred acre wood is a charming mix of huts and outbuildings new and old. The vegetation overgrowth and misty air conceal various construction materials and antiques around the property. Dishes and coffee are available, and the BBQ worked as long as you can squeeze into the narrow place where it’s situated. The washroom is cute, the kitchen is slated for demolition, and the cabin we stayed in was warm. Reg was enthusiastic about showing us around the property, and introducing us to the sheep.

I loved the cute little cabin in the woods. Nice little personal touch tea bag tin, firewood already split, and barbecue grills at each spot. I think needed a little landscaping. I locked myself out of the cabin somehow, but quickly got the code in the middle of the night. Im definitely coming back for future stays in the cabin.

Reg has created a very cool space on his property. We loved staying in the analogue room, it felt very private and the bed was really comfortable! There’s a cozy washroom with a clawfoot tub and hot water and a kitchen both only a few steps away.
The property itself is stunning! Lots of hiking to explore and a volcanic grotto that had some of the most incredible rocks I’ve seen. This place is magic!

Arrival wasn’t the greatest. The campgrounds entrance is behind a seafood place through a parking lot. Not clear at all it was the entrance. It also said to meet with host. Circled around a couple times then messaged the host asking for clearer directions. He replied in about 5 minutes. I messaged again asking for cabin specific directions and it took another few minutes for a reply. At which point I received an arrival message that I believe was supposed to be sent earlier but was forgotten. Host was away so I don’t know why it was set that I had to meet. Felt like he forgot I was coming.
Once in, the stay was great. The bed was very comfy, cabin clean, and the little balcony was nice.
Porta potty was clean and a very short walk outside the door.

Weekend Trip to Rusty Ranch Tree Farm and Forest
Had a short stay here last minute in the cabin and it was wonderful! Definitely would love to come back another time for longer so I can explore the property more. The cabin has a top bunk bed and a full sized futon that was actually very comfortable. The bottom bunk is two benches with a table which was nice to eat and play cards on. There is a campfire pit and a compost outhouse which was very clean and nice. A snack shack is available where you can purchase stuff with cash or Venmo. Hope to be back next year!

Words are utterly useless in describing our time on Margaret’s property, but I’ll try. Margaret is exceptional; great hospitality, active communicator, and such a sweet soul.
The property is astounding, well maintained, and incredibly family friendly. My daughter was obsessed with the farm life, that was the highlight every morning and evening. Perfect location for meandering towards Mount Baker or wanting to enjoy the perks along HWY 20; nothing was too far in my opinion. We explored Bellingham and Vancouver BC. Our nana is visiting and we always take her to new places around WA.
The add on options were a delight; we enjoyed the salmon and cinnamon rolls. The playgrounds were a perfect spot to wind down after a long day. The privy’s were impeccable and maintained daily. This did not feel like camping. The cabin is cozy and perfect for our small group.
We cannot wait to return. Thank you Margaret for absolutely everything.

Was attending a workshop in Bellingham so unfortunately wasn't able to spend a ton of time on this lovely property but I appreciated coming back after a full day to the peace and quiet, and it was VERY quiet at night. The cabin was clean and well equipped for what it was, a tiny home basically. A nice change from a sterile cheap hotel which would have been my other option. Only thing off is I think I could smell the composting toilet at times. Might have been my imagination. It didn't bother me but some more sensitive to smell might be. Overall a good experience and I will probably be staying again, maybe try the other cabin next time. Thank you!

Clean and comfortable tiny cabin. The loo and showers were nice amenities. The sink , the fridge, and basic dish ware were appreciated. We brought our camp stove and set it up outside on the picnic table. We brought our sharp knives, and cast iron pan- but forgot the spatula- but got by fine for our simple meals.
We enjoyed lazing about, wandering the grounds, visiting the large chicken coop, and nice fire pit setup. Fed the sheep nibbles, and checked out the barn, looks to be fine year round outdoor sport base.
