My parents both grew up on the southside of Chicago - where having a tree in your yard meant that you had "made it". They decided to use the land to grow Christmas trees. In recent years the farm land was sub divided. My husband Jacob and I purchased this piece of property 8 years ago. We absolutely love it here and this land is our own slice of paradise. We have 13 acres of private seclusion with a quiet and peaceful creek spot for camping on the back side of our property. We love having a place where we feel we can be away from it all! Also at the same time we are only a short drive away from downtown Lynchburg as well as quick access to route 460. Peace like a river, love like a mountain Wintergreen Resort we’re not, but if you’re looking for a cozy (800-900 sq. ft.) mountain cabin with most of the comforts of home, Rocky Run Landing might be the place for you. Our motto is “You’re a long way away from it all before you ever get here.” Rocky Run Landing sits back in a loblolly pine grove just under the crest of Hawk Ridge in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The cabin is two miles up the Tye River from the village of Norwood and the James River in southern Nelson County, Virginia. The address is 3124 Cedar Creek Road, Arrington, VA 22922. The cabin has a telephone, but no long distance service. Your calling card will work with this phone. You’ll have to find just the right spot to use your cell phone. Wireless internet is available via satellite. Rocky Run Landing consists of a small first-floor bedroom, a small loft bedroom, a bath and a half, kitchen/dining area, and a great room. The great room has two sleep futons, chairs, and a small TV/DVR with cable. A wood stove is also in the great room. The small kitchen has a full-size refrigerator, deep sink, gas range, coffeemaker, and microwave oven. A dining table and four chairs are provided, along with basic pots, pans, and tableware. Rocky Run Landing has central HVAC, but often all you need are the ceiling and pedestal fans. The best experience is al fresco! The small first floor bedroom features a queen bed, nightstand and lamp, and a chest of drawers. Bed linens, blankets, pillows, and towels are also provided. The half-bath is off this bedroom and adjoins the full bath. Electric wall heaters provide auxiliary heat in the bedroom and bathrooms. The bedroom also has a couple of very small closets, which are the only clothes closets in the cabin. The staircase to the small loft is very steep and is not recommended for older guests or the very young. The loft is furnished with a double bed. A hiking trail and a gravel road will take you the 1/3-mile to the Tye River, but be warned — both are steep. You’ll need a 4-wheel-drive vehicle to drive to the river. You’ll need good legs to walk back to the cabin. By the riverside you'll find a well-groomed recreation area with picnic tables shaded by a canopy of white ash and river birch, a fire ring, and, in the summer, even a porta-potty. A 'beach' is cleared to the river. At normal water levels, this spot on the Tye is appropriate for supervised child's play and for adult water recreation. Fishing is also fine! History has it that the Tye River was Teddy Roosevelt's favorite fishing stream. Rocky Run Landing is a good location to either begin or end a paddling or tubing trip on the Tye/James Rivers. A canoe is available for rental and your hosts can assist with planning river trips from one-half mile to 20 miles (overnight). Shuttle service is included with canoe rental. Tubes are also available for a lazy drift downstream. Charcoal grills may be requested for use at the cabin or in the riverside picnic area (guests provide charcoal). The screened porch offers a serene view of Buffalo Ridge to the south across the river (if the leaves aren't too thick). Turn on the porch ceiling fans, relax in the porch swing, and whistle back to the whippoorwills. As the evening gets quiet, let the roar of the Tye River rapids lull you to sleep. If you decide you’d like to forgo seclusion and venture into the outside world during your stay, many places of interest are within a day trip of Rocky Run Landing. Jeffersonian and other historic properties abound, Civil War sites are easily accessible, Wintergreen Resort offers a variety of activities, and kid-friendly excursions are within kid-tolerance driving distance. Your hosts will be happy to recommend itineraries based on your interests and will check with Wintergreen to ensure any desired activity is available. Many wineries, breweries, and cideries are also in the area, along with local artisan shops. We are just over an hour north of Durham, NC, two hours southwest of Richmond, VA, and 30 minutes east of Danville, VA. Our property is 204 acres of beautiful wilderness, in an international Dark Sky zone (you can see the milky way on a clear night), where you can usually hear nothing other than the calls of the animals. The property is accessed via a half mile dirt and grass road that drops you off at the main camping area at the Old Tobacco Barn. From there you have access to a composting toilet and fire circle. Roughly half the property was cleared and is open and overgrown with brush. The other half of the property is various types and stages of forest, from young to old. We have 5 waterways that I have counted so far (it's a lot of land!), including 1.5 miles of Sandy Creek, which is more of a small river than a creek, beautiful swimmable natural springs, and a half acre pond (with beavers!). We have two kayaks that you can use on the pond, and you can bring tubes or kayaks and paddle down Sandy Creek all the way to Banister River a few miles downstream. Camping is available throughout the property, although you will see several marked and prepped sites along the road or in the woods. This is rustic camping, meaning that you can drive up to some camping sites, but others are off the road and require a bit of trekking through brush, trails, or woods. This area of the state is an international dark sky zone, and the views at night are glorious - the milky way is clearly visible, you can generally catch shooting stars with regularity on any clear night, and if you bring binoculars or a telescope, you have a clear view of most of the sky. If you enjoy wild plants, foraging, bird watching, tracking, or generally getting out into a natural space, then you will enjoy the diversity of the wildlife and plant life on the property. Animals that we have verified on the land include Deer (lots!), Racoons, Cayote, Turkey, Black Bear, Fox, and a large variety of birds and other critters that we haven't identified. We have house sized boulders along Sandy Creek that you can climb on, and the creek itself is clean and swimmable. There is lots to explore throughout the property and, most of all, it's a wonderful place to rest and relax out in nature. A few things to keep in mind: * The road is a dirt road, meaning that it turns muddy after it rains. Please be mindful of this and park at the front and walk in if it is raining or has rained the day before you arrive. Also, if it looks like it will rain while you are on site, you may want to move your vehicle to the front of the property to make it easier to get out when you leave. Having said that, the road is good and any car can drive it without issue when it is dry. * Smaller campers and trailers are welcome on the property as well, although we do not have a place to dump/empty your septic, so please take waste off site. * We do not have showers or potable water on site, so you will need to pack water in with you. This is rustic camping. * We do have a composting toilet - please drop a handful of wood shavings into the bucket when you are done. For folks who are comfortable doing so, please consider urinating outside rather than in the composting toilet. ;)

Peter met me at the entrance, took plenty of time to show me around before leaving me to pick my own spot for the night - lots to choose from, all really excellent. We had a wonderful time over at Main House RV 1 Harris hideaway. Dewitt was very accommodating and friendly. Had a wonderful chat with him when we arrived. He was kind enough to set up the spot for two campsites, one for me and my buddy, who also had a camper. Very responsive to our questions. The campsite was beautiful, and we went exploring over at the creek bed where he made some trails to get to it. Nice and easy walk to it. 10/10 would do again. There was no light pollution at all so we could see every star in the sky during our stay. The place was nice and quiet. It was a very relaxing stay. Thank you again Dewitt!

Wendy's Hipcamp was amazing! The location along the James River was absolutely stunning. Our site felt secluded from the other sites and had plenty of space for hanging out. We loved waking up and walking right down to the river to enjoy our coffee. The location is close to Natural Bridge State Park and Wendy's recommendation for Natty B Cafe was the perfect spot to grab food in the area.

Weekend Trip to Reckless Raven Farm

Lacie and her family were extremely friendly, helpful, and welcoming. The tent campsites felt super private, the land is beautiful. They provided us with treats to feed the horses, they keep fishing and cooking equipment in their barn for you to use. They even hooked us up with some cooking oil when we forgot ours. Only minutes from town but you feel like you're worlds away out there. They sent us off with a fresh dozen eggs and smiles. We had an amazing time and will absolutely be back.

We have already decided to come again next year but will also go when we can enjoy the beauty of the farm and trails. Was able to quickly walk through trails but have great quiet spaces to listen to nature and ground yourself. Thank you Amy for being a great host even with the chaos.

Weekend Trip to Hidden In Nature

Looking for a place to stay last minute while traveling. Was able to book the same day., I really wish I would’ve stayed longer because it was really nice spot. I pulled in at night. I parked in the middle of the field. I woke up to breathtaking views in total peace and quiet. It would be a good spot to set up a campsite because it’s so convenient nice and flat, quiet and secluded with great views.

Weekend Trip to James River Depot

We arrived late but it was easy to find a vacant site, and we quickly set ourselves up in #4. Peaceful night watching an amazing display or stars over the James River. Convenient portajohn nearby was much appreciated. In the morning we had breakfast then packed up to go off on adventures. This was a perfect spot to land for a night, and we’ll definitely come again next time we’re in the area.

It was like a ton of "highdeas" came to life on her farm! Hospitality isn't right. You're treated just like family. The trails are awesome! All the many different hangout spots are just- wow!!!
