It's a beautiful piece of land that was perfectly calm and quiet for my mini retreat (2 days). There was an odd cold front that moved through and Scott had a small heater already in the bus when I arrived. That plus the 3 blankets kept me cozy. I was glad to have brought bedroom slippers! Scott provided 4 small bottles of water for drinking (+5 gallons for washing) but I was happy I'd brought a gallon of drinking water because I drank it all!

The loft was better than described and pictured. R.Lee had the heat turned on when I arrived as it was to be a cooler night and the place was clean, neat and warm. The bathroom house is spectacular! Better than some hotels and that too was warm. Due to rain I opted not to explore the property extensively, though I was welcomed to do so. The property has a lake, is peaceful and though off the beaten track, is close to restaurants and breakfast shops. Enjoyed my stay.

For a convenient stop-over this little vintage camper on the farm made for pleasant stay. Inside was clean and the amenities needed were present. It was relaxing and restful for us. We fell asleep listening the the farm animals, then it was quiet. By daylight, the adorable, wandering ducks made a visit to the camper and we enjoyed a brief walk about the farm fields.

What a lovely retreat! A comfy & cozy stay tucked in the woods, surrounded by ferns and trees. Silas the canine camp host was a highlight…he played so respectfully with our old dog, we were shocked to see her running around with him and playing “tag!” The pond was great, and we look forward to coming back and exploring the trails! Our campsite was an easy walk to the pond and gathering areas, yet still felt completely private. FYI, the path down to the cabin is a little steep if you need to be mindful of how heavy your cooler is when you pack it. We highly recommend the fox den!

The camper was a wonderful weekend getaway for my husband and me. We hiked nearby locations and enjoyed nearby ciders, wine, and beer. We added on the breakfast and smores options and those were delicious! We made a small fire on Saturday night. This is really a great way to get away from it all with the comforts of a flushing toilet and a soft mattress!

Learn more about this land: Fall asleep to hooting owls and the gentle ripple of the river and creek that flank your campsite. Wake up with a dip in the river or a morning hike in the woods. Feel the hug of the mountains throughout your stay, while also having access to Blacksburg nearby should you need it. DIRECTIONS: Upon entry the gravel road is shared with my neighbor and it is about 1.5 miles from the entry gate to the site. You'll enter thru a gate (it may be closed, if closed please close behind you as my neighbor sometimes has cows). Go approx 1 mile the road will split...go up the hill on the right. Continue past the Hay barn another half mile. Park on the left side of the gravel road along the tree line. Another 50ft you'll see a wood foot bridge across the creek. The sites are ahead, PawPaw is first, then Bloodroot Base Camp (bell tent), and lastly Cohosh Cove is the most private. Each site has a sign as well When driving, please be respectful of the right of way. Drive slowly and respect the farm equipment. Also please do not venture onto the neighbor’s property other than entry and exit. About the property 20 minutes from Blacksburg and 35 minutes from Roanoke, our campground gives you great access to the “Triple Crown” of the Appalachian trail, consisting of McAfee Knob, Tinker Cliffs, and Dragon’s Tooth. Conquer these iconic peaks of Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains for spectacular views of the surrounding wilderness. Additionally, explore Falls Ridge Nature preserve, Cascades waterfall, and Carvin’s Cove for hiking, kayaking and mountain biking. W.T. Farm?

What makes W.T. Farm special is the diversity of textures of the landscape. We have great mountain top views, as well as, a deep holler with cliffs, rock outcroppings, and waterfalls. The fields are full of fruit and nut trees and there are 5 ponds. Each of these supports its own flora and fauna. I acquired stewardship of this land 35 years ago and have developed perennial orchards wherever possible. I started with pears and have branched out into pawpaws, apples, persimmons, currants, black walnuts etc. and I boast that I planted the first commercial hickory oil orchard in the world. I am an eccentric horticulturalist and graft cultivar varieties onto existing trees like oaks, hickories, black walnuts, and even the maligned invasive honeysuckle, autumn olive and multiflora rose. Just last year I bought an adjoining farm that opened up 50 acres of more orchard planting. It is on top of the mountain and offers an expansive view of the valley and ridge system that defines our region. Funny thing is that because the land between the old farm and the new farm is divided by cliffs in the holler the only way to get from one to the other is a 12 minute drive or vigorous hiking. On this new land is a historic log cabin I am renovating that is said to be one of the original settler's cabin on the mountain. Because of the amount of tree fruit I grow and the varied landscape, there is a rich diversity of birds and animals to be seen. One of my favorite walks is along the cliffs to the top waterfall where there is a sweet wading pool. I have also built a number of ponds and four of them are quite swimmable. One has a dock and is where we spend much summer time refreshing and frolicking. The farm is also a small (very small) licensed farm winery and we make and sell traditional hard cider from our apples and pears. Our cider can be purchased along with our nut oils and flours and other farm produce you may not be familiar with. We live to eat. Coming here is a gastronomical adventure! I run the Acornucopia project from here and from it we are developing a foragers network that would very much suit the lifestyle of hipcampers. We pay foragers for wild nuts they gather.
