Full of tulip polars, spruces, locusts, cedars and greenbrier; she is home to passing black bears, turkeys, deer and more. Over the years the property has been stewarded by different groups who work to make a place for all walks of life in search of sanctuary. Today this 69 acre property hosts some remnants of structures built turn of the century, a family house, a burial ground, a barn that will be a bonfire soon and a stream running through that supply's water to the county we are wanting to reclaim. We are just over an hour north of Durham, NC, two hours southwest of Richmond, VA, and 30 minutes east of Danville, VA. Our property is 204 acres of beautiful wilderness, in an international Dark Sky zone (you can see the milky way on a clear night), where you can usually hear nothing other than the calls of the animals. The property is accessed via a half mile dirt and grass road that drops you off at the main camping area at the Old Tobacco Barn. From there you have access to a composting toilet and fire circle. Roughly half the property was cleared and is open and overgrown with brush. The other half of the property is various types and stages of forest, from young to old. We have 5 waterways that I have counted so far (it's a lot of land!), including 1.5 miles of Sandy Creek, which is more of a small river than a creek, beautiful swimmable natural springs, and a half acre pond (with beavers!). We have two kayaks that you can use on the pond, and you can bring tubes or kayaks and paddle down Sandy Creek all the way to Banister River a few miles downstream. Camping is available throughout the property, although you will see several marked and prepped sites along the road or in the woods. This is rustic camping, meaning that you can drive up to some camping sites, but others are off the road and require a bit of trekking through brush, trails, or woods. This area of the state is an international dark sky zone, and the views at night are glorious - the milky way is clearly visible, you can generally catch shooting stars with regularity on any clear night, and if you bring binoculars or a telescope, you have a clear view of most of the sky. If you enjoy wild plants, foraging, bird watching, tracking, or generally getting out into a natural space, then you will enjoy the diversity of the wildlife and plant life on the property. Animals that we have verified on the land include Deer (lots!), Racoons, Cayote, Turkey, Black Bear, Fox, and a large variety of birds and other critters that we haven't identified. We have house sized boulders along Sandy Creek that you can climb on, and the creek itself is clean and swimmable. There is lots to explore throughout the property and, most of all, it's a wonderful place to rest and relax out in nature. A few things to keep in mind: * The road is a dirt road, meaning that it turns muddy after it rains. Please be mindful of this and park at the front and walk in if it is raining or has rained the day before you arrive. Also, if it looks like it will rain while you are on site, you may want to move your vehicle to the front of the property to make it easier to get out when you leave. Having said that, the road is good and any car can drive it without issue when it is dry. * Smaller campers and trailers are welcome on the property as well, although we do not have a place to dump/empty your septic, so please take waste off site. * We do not have showers or potable water on site, so you will need to pack water in with you. This is rustic camping. * We do have a composting toilet - please drop a handful of wood shavings into the bucket when you are done. For folks who are comfortable doing so, please consider urinating outside rather than in the composting toilet. ;)

Peter met me at the entrance, took plenty of time to show me around before leaving me to pick my own spot for the night - lots to choose from, all really excellent. I stayed at campsite #3. Campsite had a picnic table and an area for a fire. The campsite is located about a 3/4 of mile from the main road. Very quiet and remote, perfect for camping. A small creek borders the back of the campsite and the sound of running water at night makes sleep come quickly. For anyone interested, I have Verizon and could make calls and receive texts, but don't expect to do any streaming. I would definitely use this campsite again.

We had a relaxing time at camp mcfender! We ended up staying at site 3 since there was no other sites booked. Both site two and three are cozy and both have creek access. The sites are in a nice secluded area of the property. It would have felt a little less private especially on the creek if the other site was booked. Russ has a lot of mountain bike trails on property so it would be a great spot for someone wanting to camp and ride.

I recently had the pleasure of staying at the Log Cabin on Virginia Farm, and I can't say enough good things about my experience! From the moment I arrived, Shirley, our host, made us feel right at home. Her warm welcome and thoughtful personal touches truly set the tone for a relaxing getaway. The cabin itself was exactly as described—cozy, clean, and equipped with everything we needed for a comfortable stay. The amenities were fantastic! We loved spending our afternoons by the pool, exploring the scenic walking trails, and enjoying some friendly competition on the ball courts. The fire pits were the perfect spot to unwind in the evenings, roasting marshmallows and sharing stories under the stars. Overall, this stay exceeded my expectations. If you're looking for a peaceful retreat with plenty of activities to enjoy, I highly recommend the Log Cabin on Virginia Farm. Thank you, Shirley, for being such a wonderful host! My husband and our two dogs loved our stay! The property is absolutely stunning! We made sure to wake up every morning for the incredible sunrise 🌅 It was very hot during our stay, but we were able to cool off in the pool and the AC was plenty for us to be comfortable while indoors. We mostly stayed by the pool because of the heat, but the barn and fire pit area were awesome! Everything was very clean and the kitchen fully stocked with everything we needed for our stay. Our dogs loved the front porch and being able to walk/run off leash. Shirley was extremely respectful of our privacy, but also made sure to leave us a friendly note with her number if we needed anything at all. 10/10 recommend this hipcamp 😊

What a wonderful place! It’s such a cool historical property, and the view is beautiful. The hike through the woods is very fun, as is the pool and all of the provided activities like tennis, fire pit, etc. The cabin has everything you need. We were there during some of the hottest days of summer, and the AC units and fans kept it plenty cool enough in the main living spaces and the main bedroom. If you had a larger group and needed to use the second bedroom, that might be too warm during the summer (but the living room could be used as a makeshift second bedroom too, and it has an AC unit). Shirley was very helpful and responsive and clearly takes great care of the property.

Awesome, private , well kept campsite. We loved it. We had a large group (family) and there was plenty of room to spread out. Two campers 13' and 16' and two tents all on unique sites. No problems getting in or out. Russ is right, 16' is probably the max you can get down there. We hip camp a lot and Russ's spot has moved way up the list of favorites. Russ was great, very responsive and helpful. Thanks Russ. Just what we were were looking for.

Camp McFender was awesome! We were greeted upon arrival and got to meet (and feed) some pretty awesome cows! The property is kept up very nicely with great biking/hiking trails. The campsite was secluded right up against the creek. The sound of the creek at night can’t be beat! Our dog was thrilled to play in the creek and roam our campsite. We’ll definitely be back and thankful for such an awesome place to getaway.

This was our second trip to Blue Ridge Overland Gear and camping at site #2. Rick is a great host and the site was great. Plenty of space for two rigs. Very secluded but still easy to get to from the Blue Ridge, National Forest roads and cool downtown districts in Lynchburg and Roanoke. We will definitely be back!

You'll enter thru a gate (it may be closed, if closed please close behind you as my neighbor sometimes has cows). Go approx 1 mile the road will split...go up the hill on the right. Continue past the Hay barn another half mile. Park on the left side of the gravel road along the tree line. Another 50ft you'll see a wood foot bridge across the creek. The sites are ahead, PawPaw is first, then Bloodroot Base Camp (bell tent), and lastly Cohosh Cove is the most private. Each site has a sign as well When driving, please be respectful of the right of way. Drive slowly and respect the farm equipment. Also please do not venture onto the neighbor’s property other than entry and exit. About the property 20 minutes from Blacksburg and 35 minutes from Roanoke, our campground gives you great access to the “Triple Crown” of the Appalachian trail, consisting of McAfee Knob, Tinker Cliffs, and Dragon’s Tooth. Conquer these iconic peaks of Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains for spectacular views of the surrounding wilderness. Starting December 1, or first night below freezing we will be closing down Bath House and only access will be at outhouses. Only sites near outhouses will be open and there will be no access to water. Situated at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains and bordering the Jefferson National Forest, Thunder BRidge has scenic, large, private tent sites and cabins in the woods for those who want to experience camping at its finest. Many of the sites border Elk Creek. Our RV sites are large, flat and at the edge of the forest in a well kept open green space. Our 100 acres was originally a camp built by the Civilian Conservation Corp in the "30s and early '40s, then a boys' juvenile detention center and Big Brothers'/Big Sisters' camp, which closed in 2009. The tent sites and cabins are in the forest, away from the buildings out front, but you're free to walk around and check out the historic site. Most of the buildings out front are artist studios (currently for 16 artists). We like to share the camp with others and watch it come back to life. All within a short driving distance are the Natural Bridge, wineries, breweries, Natural Bridge Zoo, Safari Park, Dinosaur Kingdom, Appalachian Trail, Blue Ridge Parkway, James River, historic Lexington, Devil's Marbleyard, Glenwood Horse Trail, swimming holes, etc. We have river access 2 miles up the road if you'd like to fish or put your kayak or canoe in. Truly, there is something nearby for everyone. We'd be happy to give you recommendations of things to see and do. If you are a star gazer you won't be disappointed by our dark sky.
